To answer your questions: Yes, I have recently developed jaw pain and I just

think it is one more joint the disease has attacked...

and I have gotten cold sores since my early twenties, but back then they were

always pre-menstrual related...and now that I have gone through the change

and have this disease I am sure my debilitated condition has brought on more

frequent episodes of them...always on the upper lip in the same place.

A few years back there was a big TMJ thing going on. I wonder if

it just Arthritis. My dentist made a splint for me to wear to

bed to keep me from clinching my teeth. It really did me no good

because I would wake up in the morning with it in my hand. I

would take it out of my mouth while I was asleep. I think I

would go nuts if I had to wear braces. The left side of my jaw

is the one that gives me trouble. It reminds me of a muscle

cramp. Hasn't stopped me from eating more than I should though!

Too bad there is not a good side effect to some of these problems

we all have. I know the TMX is suppose to cause a loss of

appetite. I could use a little of that! It does upset my

stomach but that makes me feel like I need to eat. I think I am

going to get back to Weight Watchers.

Hi Lori,

I am not diagnosed yet, at least not complete diagnosis. I have problem with

cold sores in corner of lips. You will never believe what I use to treat

it. I use whatever cream or lotion I have around that includes alpha

hydroxy acid. I guess it is because the virus doesnt like acid environment.

The sores go away in a day or two, but eventually come back after a long

remission.

Since MTX is an immunosupressant, it may certainly have allowed a flare of

the herpes simplex. Can you get a prescription for Valtrex or one of the

other anti-virals that are out now for herpes? It may help.

Hi ,

The Dr. had me take Zoverax. This antibiotic is very strong and I

ended up with a yeast infection everytime. I do use it topically

in a cream form. It is not nearly as effective as by mouth by I

just can't tolerate the yeast problem. Most of the time the cold

sore is more of a nuisance than anything. It causes a bit of a

fever and swollen glands and some pain but this time it was

worse. I actually had two of them by my eye. This is something

that has never happened before. The pain in my head and eye was

pretty intense for a while. I will be talking to the Dr. about

it. The biggest concern with this type of cold sore is eye

involvement. I have not had that happen but I always get a

warning from the Dr. to be aware of the possibility. I will ask

him if there are any other solutions.

I have no idea how I got this virus. It is always on my check.

The cold sore started around the time the Psoriasis did at 11-12

years old. I hadn't been kissed at that age so I know it was not

from some germy boy!

Folic acid will help with the cold sores. I take it everyday, because

I was getting a lot of sores inside my mouth. The folic acid stopped

it almost immediately. Randy in Va.

Thanks for the warm welcome to this discussion group. Wanda I have a 'cold

sore' story to tell.... My husband frequently gets cold sores on his mouth

and before they actually 'appear' he gets a kind of tingly feeling that

tells him that a cold sore is definitely 'on the way.' The last time he had

the tingly feeling happen (about a year ago), on the spur of the moment he

decided to use my Zapper.

He noticed, almost immediately that the tingly feeling was gone! The cold

sore just did not happen. He was totally amazed and impressed! He has

never had a cold sore since then, so maybe they're gone for good?

I have more stories to share but will save them for later.

I had the same experience. But after a while, the cold sore came back,

and I zapped again. Not getting good results, I checked the battery

and it was down a bit from its full strength. I replaced it with a

fresh battery, and volla! success.

A fresh 9-volt battery actually puts out 10 to 10.5 volts. But when

you measure the current at the wrist band, it is less by 0.8 to 1.0

volts.

I recommend lithium batteries. Although they are more expensive, they

maintain their peak output longer.

Better still, although not quite so portable, is the rechargeable

12-volt battery with output slots for 3,6,9, and 12 volts. It pays for

itself quickly, since I don't have to buy fresh batteries.

I have recently gone to a plug-in, AC-DC transformer and hooked it up

to my zapper. Although it says 12 volts, it puts out actually, 15.5

volts (and at 500 milliamps). I am told, the higher voltage is because

the zapper puts such a small " draw " on the transformer. I decided to

go this route because of positive reports I heard from others. I have

to be pretty careful not to burn myself. I would welcome any other

information on the effects of this. It may not be for everyone.

I have trouble off and on with cold sores, too. Lots of dental care helps but they are also a result of a low immune system. If they get too bad or don't clear up, it's a good idea to check with the dr. or dentist. My dr. said that sometimes people get "thrush" which sounds basically like a major outbreak of cold sore and there is medication to help with that. The other ideas people have shared seem to be good ones, too.

They are an annoyance for sure!

under any kind of physical assault such as sunburn, windburn, etc. they

really erupted! Now he takes L-lysine. It's inexpensive and readily

available. He takes a tablet a day as maintenance (when he remembers! LOL)

and if he's been out in the weather and really beat up his lips he takes a

couple/three tablets for extra insurance. He's done this for about ten

years now and I can remember only one time when the cold sores manifested --

and they were small and quickly went away.

I use yogurt! After being frustrated with the doctors and the medication

that they kept giving me, I began to think about yogurt: good bacteria -

yogurt ... bad bacteria - cold sores.. so I tried it and whammo! In three

when my son gets cold sores I use a lip balm thing I found with lyseine. I

don't think that's how it's spelled, but I'm a lousy speller.

But to get him to leave them alone, I wish i knew. My son has a huge scar

from what started as a small scratch last spring, he still picks it. And

it's on his forehead just abobe his nose. I drew a picture of him and he

took a black marker to it, drew a big spot where that scar is.

The lip balm with lysine should help.

I take one l-lysine every day..and I never get cold

sores any more. If I forget for a few days..I'll get

one!

around his mouth (possibly cold sores) and he will not leave them alone so

they are not healing; they are now red, bleeding and very sore. I have

applied vaseline to ease his discomfort. Does anyone have suggestions on

what I can do for this so that it heals or apply to ease his pain? He is

licking his mouth, so I can't apply anything that can't be ingested. I do

have him on antivirals (ie. monolaurin etc).

I get cold sores - so thank you about the advice about the lysine, I

will now start taking it!!

As for helping your son heal, I always use lysterine on a cotton

ball, it really helps it dry out and keeps the swelling down. If

it's the scab that is bothering him, did you try abreva?? It'a an

otc medication for cold sores.

Have you heard of Sara's Diet or Lutein-free? Anyway, Sara had similar symptoms

that eventually went away by taking luteins out of her diet. The book is called,

" The Power of Exile " if you are interested.

I take Lysine too, 500-1000 mg daily, so rarely get a cold sore but

treat them with Colostrum and acidophulus (cultrelle) taking 2 caps,

3xday. This stops them for me and heals them. Hope this helps

My kids did not get cold sores, but they needed lutein free even with

HNI enzymes. Chelation removed that problem, so even tho the

proponents of lutein free say it is an " inborn error of metabolism " ,

for my son was deep metal toxicity. It was the last food intolerance

to leave.

We gave our 7 yo dd 500 mg L-Lysine (caps) at the first sign of outbreak. We

gave that

daily, increasing to 1000 mg/day until the cold sore was well on its way to

healing over.

It was our first experiment with giving L-Lysine for cold sores and I wasn't

sure what to

dose at first. My impression was that the cold sore healed more quickly than

leaving it on

its own, and there was less oozing and scabbing. We did not give anything

topically this

time around (we usually use an ointment which contains L-Lysine).

Hi ,

I use lysine when I feel them coming on, but if I don't catch it

early, the Lysine is useless. I did read on the CK2 list that some

people had success putting glutathione on it. Not sure why that

would work, but apparently it can make a difference. For simple OTC

stuff, there is a lip cream called Herpecin (I always hated that

name) that I used to use (haven't had one in a while) and found

effective. It should be available at your local drugstore.

I have a cold sore/blister that appears in the same area on my lip

only after I've had a high fever. If I get to it when I can feel

the texture change in my lip but before I actually 'see' the cold

sore, a product called Abreva works wonders. It is OTC.

Now, the last time I used this was before I got in to reading

labels... I don't even know the active ingredient or additives.

Good old fashioned Carmex is always a possibility. I believe the

active ingredient is salicylic acid. I don't know if Carmex

actually helps eliminate cold sores or just feels good.
