Guest guest
I usually get a little bit labs here & there whenever I can get it & try to piece everything together. However, I just met with a new PCP and I am the little worm with high hopes... he is familiar with gastric bypasses & has several patients & the first thing he did was request labs to test everything including A,D,E,K,zinc, ferratin & a bunch of other stuff I haven't been tested for before. ... music to my ears. I didn't even have to beg ... doc took it all upon himself. I am doing a jig. ) Trish >How often does everyone get labs done? We're quarterly til our wt is stable >or until our labs are stable. Then 6 months,. then 1 yr, but never less >often than 1 yr. Everybody?

Now I realize the calcium is leeching out, not being absorbed. The stress of this news, sort of makes me want to chew a whole box of Viactiv, (carbonate) instead of my 2 a day! <BG> My addict is saying , ok, just take MORE Vicativ, like 4-5 a day instead!!! Feedback? Though I think I know what some of you will say. ;( ;)A

Guest guest
Sue, somewhere I've also read this info. I sure hope some good info comes from your study. I've read some info about the hormone factor significant for re-strengthening bones.... along with weight-bearing exercise... Other than the reduced calcium absorption, I don't know how our sugeries affect the hormone factor(s) ... ??? your study could provide some good insight into this. Based on some post-op osteoporosis stories I've read, we seem to have the tendency to fall prey to the disease. Thank you for sharing. Guest guest
I was told to take our calcium at nite along with magnesium for better absorption. Yes, citrate is best. Anyone else? calcium Jana, Yes, we are at higher risk. Calcium is just ONE of the elements we can't extract from food. But it takes a few years for the shortages to show up. Tums don't have Vit D in 'em, so I don't take 'em. Aside from the fact that I don't like 'em! The Viactiv DO have D, and have a combo of calcium's. I think they're adequate, personally. Citrate IS the best form. Carbonate is the middle and straight oyster shell is the " least " . However, taking SOMETHING is better than nothing. Citrate is expensive. But if you could maybe take some in citrate and some " cheap " in a form you WILL take, you should be on your way. We shoot for 1500mg elemental calcium (that's on the back in fine print, usually) per day, with D. D is another element we don't absorb very well, so you may be ahead to take addition D, but in dry form, not softgel. I take 1600mg of D, but that's according to what our labs show, not guesswork. The elements we no longer digest from food: protein iron calcium A D E zinc B12 (maybe potassium & magnesium) Thanks, www.vitalady.com
Guest guest
>My husband takes the oyster shell and got WAY better labs with it. But as we know, blood had little to do with bones. Now, to switch him over to something ELSE he will take..... >>>>>> was reading a fitness mag. last night and an article on vitamins and again in print there it was..... don't take oyster shell because of lead content. from what I've read it's like the crystals in the product produce a false negative reading in blood tests with this type product anyhow. Guest guest
Sue, why shouldn't I take my calcium with my Synthyroid? N Re: Calcium >>>> She also said TUMS and those choc chews, can't think of the name right now, were no good for us. She said we need like cltrate or something 4 times a day. She said we do not have the stomach acid needed for the TUMS or the chews. Has anyone heard this before? >>>>> yes calcium citrate is what you should be taking - tums are useless and viactiv taste good and do us no harm but are not as readily absorbed as any of the calcium citrates. you should take between 600 and 1500 mg. depending on how much calcium is in your multi and how much calcium you are eating in foods. more than 1500mg. does put you at greater risk for kidney stones. calcium supplements will not prevent osteoporosis if you are genetically prone or already have low levels of density. as for taking it four times a day - that I have never heard - you do not want to take it with your B's, your iron or if you are on Synthroid so that limits when to take it. you can take two calcium citrate pills at one time which is what I do with my boron and D for added absorption. there has been extensive emails about this in the spring of this year, so check the archives. Guest guest
I saw on here that you shouldn't take ferrous sulfate, Why? I take 325 mg. a day. Is it not being absorbed? Mariko- At the HFS yesterday they helped me find Nature's Plus Children's Chewable Calcium in the Natural Vanilla Sundae flavor. A bottle of 90 cost $7.95. Two tablets provide 25% of calcium and 13% of magnesium. Its a vegetarian based formula. Says it is free of artificial colors and preservatives. Free from the common allergens yeast, wheat, corn, soy and milk. Ingredients: Fructos, stearic acid, calsource (spinach and broccoli extracts, fig concentrate, date concentrate) silica and natural vanilla. Unless anyone else says otherwise, I'm assuming these are safe. Alice GFCF:Calucium supplement? >I am looking for GFCF Calcium supplement. Free of the most common allergens such as fish, corn, soy, yeast, wheat, barley, lactose and all milk and egg products. No added flavorings, sugars, salt, artificial sweeteners, preservatives or salicylates. What ever that is. I open the cap and give him half in his rice or almond milk. it is tasteless. I bought these for myself actually because I am a high risk for osteo arthritis, and they are easy on the stomach and quickly digested. Twin labs is available at most health food stores or GNC.
