The only difference I have noticed over the years is primarily with

the additives (fillers) that each company uses to form their pills.

These may incluse sweeteners, dyes and the like. While working

extensively with the mentally ill we did note that some fillers cause

adverse reactions (allergic reactions, seizures, etc...). Overall they

should be ok, but do watch for any noticable changes in their

effectiveness or possible side effects.

generic meds

Hi all... anyone know about generic vs brand name drugs? I have

always been given the brand name (Glucophage XR) until today when I

was given the generic. I didn't realize until I opened the bottle

tonight and noticed the shape of the pills were different.

The pharmacist didn't ask me if I wanted generic. I don't mind either

way - my copay is $5 regardless. I'm assuming the generic will work

just as well and so I took it.

Should I be concerned about anything? Should I question my pharmacist?

Hi Jacki,

I take the generic when available (even my chemo drugs were generic) and I've

not had any problems. If my doctor and my pharmacist tell me it is okay, I

don't have any problems. I know this is not true with all people, but I trust

my doctor and pharmacist completely.

I'm on 2 meds now and neither one of them is generic (generic not available)

so I'm having to pay more for these prescriptions. I thought I was going to

come off one of them in Aug when I have another bone density test, but that is

not the case. With the new med I'm taking, I need the Actonel.

I have noticed no difference in the generic Glucophage XR and the name brand

either. I buy generic whenever I can.
