Re: oral metronidazole

This question goes out to Skylar, Esther, Bill, Kerry or anyone who might

know. I was put on the monodox (oral) a few weeks ago to help control the

acne component of my rosacea. Since then I am in a major flare constantly

even though I have used nothing but water and noritate on my face. I would

like to ask the derm about the oral metronidazole since even the noritate

seems to bother me topically lately. Has anyone had any experience with

using this and if so what are the side effects, etc. of being on it. I would

try anything at this point ... it seems like it never subsides anymore. Do

you think the monodox taken orally could be causing part of the problem?

Thanks and enjoy Memorial Day Weekend!

The derm who diagnosed me with rosacea uses flagyl often to treat the disease.

My latter derm says it doesn't help at all - and has her patients on metrocream!

Derms must be as different as rosaceans; it's mostly up to ourselves, I think,

to find solutions that work for us. - Thor.

Sherry,

What does the sulfa drug do? Or rather, what is it supposed to do?

Hi Margaret,

I've been told that the oral metranidozole (flagyl) does not work on rosacea.

I've just switched from metrocream, which did not seem to be helping me,

noritate

but it is causing me quite a lot of bumpiness.

As for the flushing, I was queen of the flushes until I find this email group

three weeks ago and started taking Claritan because of information I found here.

It has made a tremendous difference to me, even through a monthly cycle that

ALWAYS causes a horrible flush. Not this time. (Believe me, I thought there

was

absolutely no hope for me.) The other thing I began using about the same time

was an oral sulfa drug. Somehow things are working.

Ditto. I mean, sometimes I think it might be helping me, but there's really no

dramitic difference. I keep using it 'cause I can't remember how bad I was

before I used it, and who knows how bad I might be if I didn't use it. Real

scientific approach huh?

Metrogel worked well initially but now is practically useless for me.

Probably because as an antibiotic, we have developed resistance to it. I

hesitate to stop using it too, but would gladly do so if an alternative came

along. I'm trying to get some colloidal silver, which is more or less

supposed to do the same thing--disinfect the skin.

Yes, I know, it's the same active ingredient in both - but flagyl is oral and

metrocream/gel topical. - Thor.

I did try a couple of weeks ago to skip metrocream (1%), that I usually use once

daily, for ten whole days because I felt it was making my skin red. It felt good

the first days to be without, but then the flaky skin and bumps reappeared so I

had to give in and begin using it again. The skin looked better immediately

after that. - Thor.

Diane, I was put on Metrogel. I didn't see any improvement but it was not a

very long period of time. The red stayed red and I had a ton of bumps and my

face was always hot. I haven't used it for a month and I only have two red

spots under one eye and no bumps at all. My face is not hot anymore. I would

say that Metrogel was causing more harm than good. Now I use Zia and a light

film of moisturizer and that is all.

Not for me, or the Noritate, either.

Diane, I was on Metrogel for a few years. It didn't help with the bumps at all.

It did temper the redness a bit, but not much. I found that not trigerring my

triggers did more good. Matija
