Here's my .02 . . . my blood work was awful I was taking the Slow Fe as

recommended (ferrous sulfate) I became anemic . . . I switched to Gentle Iron

FE Bisglycinate, I was less anemic but still anemic. . . and yet again I went

to the Ferrous fumerate in a complex with B and C as recommended by Vitalady.

My iron levels doubled in 3 months and I am no longer anemic. When I faxed

my labs to my surgeon he called me on the phone and asked that I bring in the

bottle so he can recommend the ferrous fumerate complex to all his post op

patients. I did some online research and saw a little bit about iron

bioavailability, but it was information, not studies. All I know is my blood

work is awesome now!

Jan,

Its not that ferrous sulfate is BAD, just that it is the most poorly

absorbed, has the highest rate of constipation and GI upset. The

information is readily available in the PDR (Physician's Desk Reference) as

well as in any upper level chemistry book.

my doctor at Mayo said it does not matter WHAT kind of iron

supplement we take. (a proximal that is)>>>

I say have your iron retested in 30 days and let the

bloodwork show if it works or not. I took plain ole iron

pills from walmart for one month and when I got my

bloodwork back it had dropped even further after taking 2

pills a day, consuming that whole bottle! it did me no good

and I lost more precious time in regaining some iron. Then

I started on the ferrous fermuate and it's been rising ever

since. I am a short proximal - just 18 " bypassed too.

Yes, I have had four labs since August and everything has been normal. My

body aches all the time though and they keep testing me but can't find

anything. My doctor even x-rayed the joints that hurt the most to see if

there was anything. I thought maybe it was the menopause thing (I hardly get

any sleep). But now I have been on estrogen replacement therapy for a few

weeks, doesn't seem to be helping though (except for the hot flashes).

I made a decision to turn the bad habits I've been practicing around. It's

not to late to change. I am only 10 months out from my gastric bypass.

Thanks for the information about the iron.

the only way to know for sure is to have an iron and folate

panel done when you do your bloodwork. most multi vits. do

not have ferrous fermuate which is the absorbable type of

iron anyhow.

have you had a bone density test done? aching bodies is one

sign of porous bones. one of the medications used to treat

osteo actually helps to ease the discomfort. although

hormone replacement therapy is the therapy of choice by the

majority of docs for post menopausal women.

lack of sleep is a major problem too. by the end of the

school year i was so sleep deprived it was unreal - i don't

teach, my daughter just gets up very very early and i'm a

lite sleeper.

I am distal: when I had a deficiency, I took approx 450 - 700 mg...

now that I am in normal range, I take 300 - 450 mg.

Bonnie-

Yes, if you take too much iron OR the wrong kind of iron, it just turns to

" tar poop " and doesn't enrich your blood! You need to get the right kind,

taken the right away to get it INTO you. Sometimes when iron is mixed into

a multi, because of all the minerals mixed with it, you will slough it and

not absorb it. Also, if you take ferrous sulfate, this could be the result.

So, if you stick with the absorbable irons, taken with C and NOTHING ELSE,

you should be able to get the benefit without the penalty!

Thanks,
