No, insulin doesn't " stop working " unless the vial you are using has been

open for more than 30 days (or, perhaps, if the expiration date has

passed). You do not get " immune " to insulin but, if you are Type 2, your

insulin resistance may be increasing or your pancreas producing less of its

own insulin . . . which would mean that you need more insulin to accomplish

the same thing . . . or you may be eating more which would require more

insulin to cover it.

><plus a handful of other diabetes drugs>.

Since you are on oral agents (pills) as well as insulin, the interaction

gets more complicated (more factors that could affect BG), especially as a

Type 2 . . . diet, exercise, effect of oral agents (which ones they are and

how/how well they work for you), how much insulin your own pancreas still

produces, etc. . . . and you should consult your doc.

Kat,

I have been on lantus for almost three years now. It still works fine for

me, I was taking 30units a night, but am now down to 20. The doctor added

another oral med, Avandia, which help me, but added some weight. I am very

sensitve to carbs, but if I stay on a low carb diet, my sugars stay at an

almost normal level.

,

I am currently taking 10 units of Lantus, 1500mg metformin, 30mg

Actos and occasionally I will also take Prandin. I wish I could

just use the insulin and stop all of those oral drugs. Insulin has

been the only drug that I can see a difference with. My last A1c

was 6.8 down from 7.0 after starting the insulin. hooray

When I first started using insulin I was " wired " , couldn't sleep,

jittery, but after a week those symptoms went away and now I feel

pretty good. The only problem I have now is that I think about food

constantly. I told my doctor that if I could lose weight I wouldn't

need all these drugs and my numbers would probably go down on their

own, so she prescribed me Meridia. This worked great for about 1

week and I lost 8 pounds but it stopped working after a week. I

can't decide if I want to take a higher dose of the Meridia......

I figure I will have to take drugs forever no matter how much weight

I lose or how good I am with carbs or exercise. My sugar goes up if

I exercise. My sugar goes up if I don't eat enough carbs. I tried

Atkin's once, and that was a disaster.

So after 2 years of experimenting I have found the best thing for me

is to just eat a low-fat diet, count calories, cover it with drugs

and accept it, get over it, and move on. :) Kat

Kat,

I have only been on the Avandia for 9 months. My average weight went up

about 20 pounds when I started the Avandia, and it has taken me 9 months to

drop 5 pounds off that. Which means I am still up by about 15.

I am taking 2000mg metformin, 20 units Lantus, 4mg Avandia (insulin

resistance), 40mg Micardis (high blood pressure), and have been taking

1200mg Lopid (cholestoral). Starting today, I am droping the Lopid and

taking 40mg Pravachol (triglycerides).

Until recently I have not had a problems with Low BG, so will probably start

eating a little more carbs, but spread them over the day.

I tried Avandia for a few months, and it made me hungry and think

about food all the time too so I quit taking it. The Lantus does

the same thing, but I can see some results with it, and so I try to

deal with it..........

My cholesterol is also elevated. I have tried a few different

cholesterol lowering drugs, but they all made me feel achy, and I

quit taking them. I take Dyazide for my blood pressure, and it

seems to work good.........
