Guest guest
Being a member of a busy family (and who isn't?), I can't seem to eat my meals on a routine schedule. Has anyone been told by their Diabetes Management Team to stick as close to a regular daily routine schedule for eating all their meals and snacks? It seems to me that a schedule would work best when it comes to blood glucose levels. Tell me how you manage to keep a schedule when you have other family members with varying routines to consider. How many hours works best between each meal? How soon after a meal would you consider eating a small snack?

Your mileage may vary, but I find I get best control if I eat every couple of hours. It doesn't have to be a lot -- a handfull of nuts or half a bananna -- but if I *don't* eat my BG goes up and I get the runs. Go fig... Guest guest
I think you can adapt to just about anything as long as you anticipate and plan ahead. Usually, I eat about 3-3/12 hours apart. I have a 1 ounce protein snack if I know a meal is going to be later and it happens often. You have to test your BGs and experiment with the mixture of your medications, eating and exercise, learn your limits and have contingency plans ready to go! Don't know if this helps, but it is a very individual thing and is dependent on your control plan. I follow a low carb plan and keep protein snacks available for such occasions. A small snack would be about 2 1/2 -3 hours or so for me, when my BG is about 80. This depends on your eating, meds and exercise plan. My system of control gives me just 2 ounces of protein at breakfast - 7:00-7:30 am or so, if I want to eat lunch about noon, I have a snack at 11:00 am. If you don't permit your meal to be fully digested, your sugar may stair step upward. It depends on your results. You have to test. I am shooting for ranges of 80-95 as much of the time as I can manage. This is very tight control, which is what I pursue to keep my HbA1c 4.5-5.2.
