Hi.

Well, I have been evaluated for the past week at the

Mayo clinic. I saw the nsg there yesterday and he

immediately discounted me as a patient for surgery

before he even talked me. It was a very entertaining

appt..I have to laugh at the medical profession still.

I think it's a good story so I will share with

everyone. It's long...

So after looking at my films the nsg, DR. Reimer, at

the Mayo in Florida, came in to tell me right off the

bat that after viewing the films and looking at my

list of sx he did not think I would be a candidate who

would benefit from surgery. He went on to explain that

they look for specific things on the films which I did

not show. (I didn't ask for specifics b/c I knew this

guy was going no where with me and I didn't want to

waste more time and energy than necessary). I had

given him my MRI images and the videotape produced

from my CINE MRI earlier.

He proceded to ask me if I had seen the 20/20 story on

TV...like I have been asked many times before by

skeptical doctors of all sorts. I immediately said yes

and acted like I didn't want to even go there if you

know what I mean. He wanted to explain that there is

much controversy surrounding chiari these days and a

lot of docs were basically doing unnecesary surgery -

specifically dr. Rosner.

He went on to say that he was not looked on well in

the neurosurgery community and that there has been an

outpouring of patients " suffering from chiari " since

the show. (of course he was getting at the fact that

some patients are treated for sx like CFS and not the

true medical definition of chiari)

My mother quickly retorted that it is extremely

unfortunate that the show was ever aired b/c it puts

an immediate stereotype on patients who may be really

suffering from sx of chiari and not seeking " unneeded

care. " (Now I have not watched the show b/c I simply

wanted to avoid it knowing that it would probably only

depress me.)

DR. Reimer then wanted me to know how serious the

surgery is and how tough the recovery. AND that he

didn't think I would want to take the risks involved

-yet he never asked me. He asked me if I knew what was

involved and I said yes. He then went on to tell me

that I had normal spinal fluid flow. OH - He had been

on the phone early on in the appt. with the

neuroradiologist (he said) making comments about the

fact that i would possibly need a CINE MRI if I had a

herniation of more than 5mm.

Basically I caught him in a lie. I asked him how he

knew if I had normal spinal fluid flow if he didn't

even realize I had given him the video of the CINE MRI

I already had!

He fumbled around and said oh IT LOOKED LIKE I HAD

ROOM FOR NORMAL FLOW ON THE FILMS but he had not

acutally looked at the video. Whatever. Obviously he

had not bothered or purposely avoided the radiology

report included in the films which stated I had

reduced flow. AND said he didn't even realize after

that that I had included the tape. Ok how do you miss

a videotape in an envelope full of MRI films? I am not

even sure he looked at my films now that I think about

it. He then called someone and said " oh apparently

there is a videotape with the films. " He wanted to see

then if the neuroradiologist was still in the building

and if he could take a quick look. (I left before this

happened)

After more conversation he ended up apologizing for

ever bringing up the 20/20 show b/c I was obviously

bothered by its contents...and that I seemed " to be

straighforward and honest about my sx. " And he wanted

to give me a little extra comfort - ha ha - due to the

fact that I had traveled across states to see him and

had been searching for answers for so long - SO he

wanted to bring my case to the surgery meeting they

had every MOnday for further evaluation and opinion.

My mom was happy with this so we then left and went

home. I am not holding my breath for any treatment or

care of any kind for that matter so I was really ready

to get the ___ out at that point.

ABout DR. Batzdorf...I waited for 2 weeks

approximately for his final answer and got none. AT

that point I had to get the films and video from UCLA

to take with me to the Mayo. So as of today he has

still not confirmed the radiology report that I have

reduced flow b/c I have the video. I called at around

the 2 week pt. and Marsha told me he was out of town

at that pt.

So thanks for asking Em about the results of my appt.

I will keep all posted after I hear from DR. B.

Thanks.
