Hi Lainie,

Splenda (the bulk box brand) is made of Maltodextrin and Sucralose.

Sucralose the main artificial sweetning agent in Splenda is a sugar

alcohol. They modify the sugar so it's harder for your digestive

track to absorb the sugar before you expel it. This is why you will

see warning labels on many sugar free products that contain any type

of sugar alcohol that over consumption of said product may cause a

laxative effect.

Maltodextrin however is a sugar derived from starch and will affect

one's sugar levels somewhat.

You have to compare the carbohydrate numbers to understand how

Splenda is different and possibly better then sugar.

1 tsp of Splenda will contain .5 grams of carbs where as sugar will

contain about 6.

This means you can supposedly have 12 tsp of sugar before your BGLs

will be affected in the same way 1 tsp of sugar would affect them.

However there is one catch here. Different people react differently

to sugar alcohols, some don't absorb them so they benefit the most

(no elavated BG levels) but other people may absorb more of the sugar

alcohol so their level will go up slightly more.

You have to understand your body and how it will react to the

different artificial sweetners out there, some are better then others

for certain people while others benefit from all of them.

Hope this helps,

Stefan

Absolutely not!! I used to use aspartame and my bg's were good...but then I

started using Splenda and they got even better! I believe scientists

removed a molecule from real sugar. What they came up with was a substance

(sucralose?) that is sweeter than sugar, but that isn't recognized by the

body as sugar. I think that's right. Anyway, as a diabetic, I've had no

trouble at all with Splenda. I understand that some people do, though.

Maybe you should try it and see if it bothers you.
