A Question (and some appreciation)

I keep thinking the same thing. Maybe it's because their medication works so

well that it keeps it at bay, or maybe they don't go out much. However, I do

know that it's more prevalent in other countries in Europe. Most of us on

this eGroup live either in the USA, Canada or England. I recently visited

Norway and rosacea is much more prevalent there. In fact, I even saw someone

with it as early as the airport in which I landed! It's no wonder over there

through, with the biting winds and freezing winter wheather they have.

My question is if there are so many people with rosacea, why do I not

know one single person with it and why do I not see people with faces

that look red and bumpy like mine?

I have seen people on the street and at work with rosacea. It's mainly older

men and women (60+) though. Maybe they don't care and don't cover up? I asked

my mom about a family member who clearly has rosacea and my mom said she didn't

notice it. I think unless you have a life threatening disease some people from

my parents generation don't think a skin disorder (unless it's skin cancer) is a

big deal. I think the younger people cover it up more.

I live in Germany (South) and my mother is having rosacea. In medical articles

it always says that rosacea is a " common skin disease " , but I also know noone

else with this diagnose apart from my mother. The funny thing is that we now

used to think that it is probably more common in the USA or Canada (maybe in

people of celtic origin who came from Ireland or so?). I was looking for a

German newsgroup on rosacea but could´t find one - so either there are not many

people having it or the reason for it is that the Internet is not so common here

as it is in the US.

I´d also say that if I see people who I think might have rosacea they are a bit

older. And it´s true that younger people will probably try to cover a skin

disease more carefully. I suppose that I will also get it sooner or later. I

have Couperose on the cheeks (small visible " veins " , my mother and my sister

have them too) and have experienced flushing (though still very seldom). I

therefore avoid extreme temperatures and use make-up.

Jen and everyone,

Speaking of make up, there's something fairly new out there -- the

creamy powder compacts, with the little sponge applicators. They are the

absolute best for covering the hard-to-cover spots -- red patches, and even

pimples. I have one by Estee Lauder, and my daughter with acne has one by

Cover Girl. I use my liquid fondation first, and then only use the creamy

powder if I need extra coverage on problem areas. Right now, my face is a

mess because I'm in the process of coming off of cortisone, and I'm just

amazed at how I can salvage my face with the use of this creamy powder.

Hi,

I remember seeing rosaceans in Germany, Switzerland and northern Italy (Sud

Tyrol) when I was travelling in Europe not so long ago. I don't believe rosacea

is more common in USA. The reason we don't find so many news groups on the topic

is propably that most sufferers do not belong to the computer generation.

Just a thought!

I just ordered a sample from a friend who sells Kay. I'll let you know

how it works!

I see people fairly frequently that I suspect have rosacea -- in fact, I

saw a good friend last weekend that I hadn't seen face to face for

awhile -- I would swear that she has rosacea ( & a lot of make-up

covering it up). She is a very proud & private person, so I think I

would bring up the subject very cautiously with her.

Another thought on this: I think we all tend to get hypersensitive

about how we look -- we think that everyone must notice our glowing

faces -- sometimes, they do, but often they don't (they're too busy

obsessing about whatever is wrong with them, real or imagined, anyway!).

i felt the very same way, I have not ever seen anyone with this disease!

Then guess what one day in Walmart i saw a lady with red cheeks and broken

blood vessels in her face. I thought ( she has rosacea), I didn't feel

comfortable going over to speak to her as you never know how others will

react. My skin doctor told me he treated lots of people with rosacea using

metrogel, but i never saw anyone in the waiting room. Last week i was a t a

trade show where most of the exhibitors were women 30+ and my god!! i saw

women with red faces and noses that had rosacea, I wanted to jump for joy

not because they have rosacea but because i didn't feel so alone ( no one

in my family or friends have this disease). susan
