Guest guest
Hi, It was the symptoms of neuropathy that made me go to my doctor. He was immediately suspicious and tested me for diabetes which came back positive. It turns out that my " neuropathy " is actually caused by my severely arthritic hip. Gail neuropathy I am newly diagnosed, not on medication, my Dr says handle with exercise and diet, I went to my neurologist for migraines and she tested me for neuropathy, she tells me I have very bad neuropathy. I don't understand, I had a low A1C test, my blood sugar levels have stayed mostly under 130, so how could I have this , She says there is no cure, I have aching in my legs and feet, worse at night, I am told just keep the sugar levels as low as possible, I am so confused, I have aches and pains and am told there is no cure, I'm given no medicine, Just told to test once a day. I did go to a diabetic class at my local hospital but didn't get much help there, Just mainly told to diet. He told me " You have diabetes, you have to expect these things " I guess I just wanted to see in anyone out there has been told they have neuropathy this soon after diagnoses of the diabetes. Guest guest
SJ, you can have neuropathy early on if you have gone a long time undiagnosed diabetic. It can be years sometimes before folks know they are diabetic, with blood sugars in the 300s and above for most of them...and that causes damage. It is true keeping bgs lower will help you, and may better the neuropathy and prevent it from getting worse. I don't know of any meds that will help it, but perhaps homeopathic meds can help? I was told I had neuropathy, but it was mild, as I have gotten bgs closer to normal it has lessen conciderably. I must have been diabetic at least a year before diagnosed, maybe more. You just don't know how long this has been sneaking up on you. Also, if you have many aches and pains, perhaps check your thyroid? Apparently it is common in women near menopause and insulin resistance is also common with that. There is special tests tho you must ask for because the usual one will not show up if problems. I wish I knew something more...maybe some of the others can suggest something to ease things for you. tam
Guest guest
Hi I have neuropathy in my feet that started 6 years before I was diagnosed in May of this year. It may be caused by something else, I don't know. I can't get anyone to give me any help as to why this has happened. It's not easy to live with. There's not too many choices for medication that don't have really bad side effects so I'm mostly going with Tylenol. I get pretty depressed sometimes. My diabetes is under pretty good control also just using diet and exercise. I haven't got much help for you except to say I'm there with you and know what you're going through. Take it one day at a time and try to keep your spirits up. If you want to email me off list and talk, my email is vhoste@.... Guest guest
I also have minor neuropathy which I considered was too soon to have but none of us knows exactly how long we were diabetic before we were diagnosed. I sometimes have uncomfortableness in my leggs . However, they may just want to monitor you for a while and see what is happening with your blood sugars and your neuropathy before trying anything else. I had loss of feeling in my right leg all the way to near the groin. With bg control I've gotten feeling back to the upper half of the foot. However, I probably won't ever get feeling back to the toes. plus, with the foot infections, the lymphatic system has basically been reemed out in that leg, so I will probably always have a little pain up the back inside of the leg. Guest guest
My neuropathy seemed to start when I was taking meds for a heart arrhythmia 6 or 7 years ago. I have always been convinced that this medication is what caused it but have received no support from my Dr. I was diagnosed in May with a fasting bg level of 170. This tells me that the diabetes had not been present for 6+ years already or it would have been far higher. I haven't taken that medication for 2 years with no improvement in the neuropathy so it appears the damage is permanent. I'll stop my whining now. [, Bruce] I am told that if the neuropathy isn't too advanced it can sometimes be reversed. I don't know of any meds that will help it, but perhaps homeopathic meds can help? [, Bruce] I have heard that B vitamins can help, but you should consult your doctor. Is there a significant Chinese community in your area? Accupuncture and/or TCM herbal compounds might help. Guest guest
At the beginning, I was told to test FIVE times a day. First thing in the morning, last thing at night, and two hours after every meal. Re: neuropathy owienurse2001 wrote: Just told to test once a day. Guest guest
Hi Tigger, You need to find some patience. It wasn't that long since you were on the floor for 30hrs. I don't know how much you can get back but give yourself a break. I don't know if some pt will help but maybe you can arrrange some. Guest guest
I know you're right, but I had the neuropathy before I was on the floor. It's probably been a little over a year now. Judy, I really need to get it a little better so I can drive. BTW, I've never had any patience. Tigger (Ruth) in Rhode Island Re: Neuropathy Hi Tigger, You need to find some patience.
