This is a letter I am typing and doctor dictates. Patient can expect

future medical expenses of approximately a thousand dollars.

Should I leave as dictated or $1,000.00?

Thanks...Tracey

My opinion: leave it as dictated. That seems to me to be an indefinite

amount of money. Gregg Reference Manual Rule 413c, p. 116 in the 9th

Edition, says, " An isolated, nonemphatic reference to money may be spelled

out. " Do's and Don'ts Rule 26-14 says, " Do spell out indefinite amounts of

money. "

If your paycheck-signer wants it in figures, write it as $1000 without the

decimal and trailing zeroes. (Gregg Rule 415: " It is not necessary to add

a decimal point or zeroes to a whole dollar amount that occurs in a

sentence " ; Do's and Don'ts Rule 26-14: " Don't use periods and zeros with

whole dollar amounts unless two or more amounts are used in the same

context in the sentence. " )
