Guest guest
Hello swatt8@... ( Watt), In reference to your comment: è I was looking at the Canon PowerShot S300, but that's è $400+. Anything a little less expensive out there? I è know nothing about them ... the operation, ease of use, è etc. I'm sure you can all enlighten me and would è appreciate any guidance on this. I have a Polaroid digital. The # on it is PDC640 if that means anything, but it's not very new. Anyway, mine has a memory stick... it's not the kind of camera that has a floppy drive. I guess it really depends on how many pictures you take and what you want to use it for. For example... You go away on vacation for a week or more and you want to take lots of pictures. You don't have a laptop computer that you are going to take with you. The problem with one with a memory stick is when you've taken the maximum number of pictures the camera will hold, you're done until you can load them on the computer or laptop. Also, if your battery goes dead there's a chance you'll lose your pictures. I think some cameras have the option that you can buy more than one memory stick/card to store the pictures on, so in this scenario, you'd just swap memory sticks/cards to be able to take more pictures until you get home to load them on your computer. That's the advantage to the ones with the floppy drives... you can take unlimited pictures and they are stored on the floppy and aren't going anywhere unless something happens to the floppy. Unfortunately, the ones with the floppy drives are the most expensive cameras. We bought this Polaroid used, and it takes beautiful pictures, and as long as I'm near my computer to load them into the hard drive and then erase them from the camera to make room for more, I'm fine. However, some day I'd love to have one of the cameras with a floppy drive so that when we go on vacation I can take the camera and a box of floppies, and I can take as many pictures as I want. Yeah, I know... dream on Jan " Typing is my life " (said sarcastically) Remember... WSTPMTR (which means, whoever signs the paycheck makes the rules). Guest guest
, you are not the only one behind the times here. I haven't bought a digital camera because I don't know the first thing about them so I would also like info on digital cameras so please forward to group. Guest guest
My neighbor got one for Christmas. His family gave him money last year but he did not want to bother with it. It was too confusing for him. So this year they bought him an HP and it has Compaque flash instead of memory stick. I don't know too much about it and it now has cost him more because as he said " you can go crazy with this. " He is now planning of buying a new printer so he can just put the flash (card or disc?) in it and it prints beautifully. He is going on a cruise in a couple of weeks so he is going out now to buy a 64 whatever so it takes more pictures. I had no intention of getting one as it is a bit extravagant for me. I had bought a $600 Pentax years ago and only last year it bit the dust. No good now so I started using the throw-aways and love what is resulting in the pictures. Now I am not so hesitant about getting one SOME DAY. So I too am benefiting from this discussion. Aliceanne On Sat, 12 Jan 2002 10:12:38 EST JanTranscribes@... writes: > Hello swatt8@... Guest guest
I have a Hewlitt Packard digital camera - an old one. It's GREAT! You can buy memory cards for them now and they are pretty cheap. I can hold over 100 pics on one of my memory cards, and you can buy up to 128 mb cards for them. It's great for taking pictures of my kids, but not too great closeup. Again, it's at least 4 years old. If you go to their website I'm sure you can find something affordable - maybe even in the $200 dollar range. We justified it by never having to spend the cash on developing film again! That makes it pay for itself, if you have kids and like to take a LOT of pictures! Guest guest
, I hit the wrong button a minute ago and I apologize. I bought my husband an inexpensive digital camera a couple of Christmases ago when he was still in investigations and frustrated because sometimes it took a long time to get the CS techs to develop pics. I don't recall what brand it is, and these days there are lots of inexpensive digital cameras. His has a memory chip that has to be inserted into a carrier that's the same size as a 3 1/4 " floppy disk. Then it can be read by a computer. Alternatively, I could have purchased a direct-download cable connection. It takes great pictures, and like any digital pictures they can be electronically cropped and enhanced before printing. He also has a good HP inkjet printer that does photo printing. (He has the old P-90 computer and a printer that's worth more than the computer it's hooked to! The man is electronically challenged, but he learned to use that camera.) What I did to select that one was check Consumer Reports' report on digital cameras and then research the sites on the Internet that rate and rank products and Internet retailers. I think http://www.zdnet.com is a good place to start your search--just enter " cameras " in the search input box. They have several listed that are $200 or less that should do the job--together with several retailers and their current prices. Guest guest
We bought an Olympia for around $300...my husband is the electronic toy guru, but I have used it and it seems easy. I don't know how to download it on to the computer, but he does it very fast, so I assume it's easy. We looked at the price ranges for digital cameras and chose somewhere in the middle range price-wise. Hope that gives you an idea. Val Re: pics/digital cameras > My neighbor got one for Christmas. Guest guest
For ease of use, I love my Sony. It uses floppy disks to store the photos and transfer to the computer - no messy cable connections. They have come down in price, but I believe they are still in the $400 range. You can view the photos on the disk through the camera, as well, and delete the ones you don't like before you transfer them - or - you can store them on the floppy. Our friends have the Canon and love it. I would go to a camera store or computer store and listen to the information about each one, then shop around for the best price. Try ecost.com or ebay.com. You can still use a regular camera, however, and have the photos sent to your email address or put on a CD. Lots of choices! -- pics/digital cameras OK, guess it's time to bite the bullet and make another purchase. I'm admittedly behind the times here as I don't own a digital camera. Can anyone suggest a fairly affordable one with *acceptable* quality. I'm afraid I can't at this point justify the expense of a high-end model. Guest guest
Someone asked for an affordable digital camera. I bought a Polaroid PhotoMax 640 Plus at Wal-Mart last Christmas for just over $100. The #1 option to buy is a battery recharger. They sold one there for around $15 with the batteries. My camera runs through batteries in 1 day's time. It can hold up to 90 photos before you have to download them. Dowloading is fairly simple to do with the book but it is time consuming (about 15 minutes total? which seems like a lot in my life). I have always thought the camera takes good pictures and was surprised that the price was so low. I can't remember if it was a Christmas special or not. Guest guest
Thank you everyone for all the useful info on digital cameras. I now know a whole lot more than I did at 8:00 this morning and will do some serious " window shopping!! " Sure hope I can convince the husband that we REALLY do need this! When he asks me (and I'm sure he will) if I need this for work, I'll be sure to say, " Oh, yes honey, it's required. " He'll never know the difference. I appreciate all your input.
