Carole,

I would suggest you ask your surgeon regards to this. I had to leave my job

as Theatre sister, as I couldn't lift the trays and trays of

Surgical ear out of the sterilizer, it was more to do with the fact I have

had both shoulders replaced, and not to do with the 2 hips.

I don't lift my grand kids, I did until they got to the age of 3 or so now

they are 5 and 6, and I just sit with them or play with them whatever but I

baby sat my grand son for 2 days a week when my daughter returned to work

buy I only did it until he was one year old.

ask him why he may have a reason.

I'm scheduled to get a new right hip installed on May 16. I've read a lot of

old posts and gotten lots of good information. One thing I don't think I've

seen addressed is weight restrictions. My surgeon gave me a nice book about

joint replacements and one of the recommendations was not to lift more than

20 pounds for the rest of my life. Well, how the heck am I going to be able

to pick up my grandkids? I'm talking toddlers here, not 10 year olds, but

still, there's a lot of things I need to do that weigh more than 20 lbs.

Have any of you been given that advice?

Come to think of it, Carole, I have never heard any weight restrictions

mentioned.

I did not do it at first just because I thought it would hurt. I have my 6

month

checkup on May 13th.....Some days I go a while and do not think of my new

hip but I am still very conscious of it. Many may have forgotten about it

by this

point in time but I have not. Good luck. BARB in Florida

The restrictions depend on the sort of surgery approach your doctor is doing. I

had Direct Anterior Approach and have no restrictions at all. Be very careful to

follow instructions according to the type of surgery you are having. I'm on my

third week and doing really well all things considered, but each surgical

approach is completely different. Please speak with your doctor and also your

physical therapist when they help you with recovery.

The other thing I was thinking about was what if you gained 20 lbs of weight?

That is so easy to do and I know you shouldn't, but what if you did?

Re: New here

I had my hip done just over a year ago and wasn't told anything about weight

restrictions. Having said that I did find carrying things difficult for some

time. Now it doesn't bother me at all and I carry pretty well everything I need

to. Okay that's not much but I wouldn't hesitate to pick up a toddler.

Does the info have a date on?
