Thank you for sharing this!

Yeah - my experience was they didn't snack - and they only eat those

fabulous desserts now and then, not daily.

My friend, whose family we stayed with over there, is very angry that the

big American franchises are moving into the cities. He is noticing that in

the larger cities (i.e. Paris) they are changing some of the traditions.

People are ordering salads only for lunch, and eating heavier dinners. They

are not taking the 2 hours normally given for lunch, because they are doing

business with people who do not. Even vending machines are being put in

some places.

I couldn't blame him for being sad about that. In Metz, and the smaller

areas where we visited, most places shut down from 12:00-2:00, they get 2

hours for lunch and they eat well. Tradition is still going strong.

That is a tradition I wish we had here - 2 hour lunches rock.

In Italy (and Spain, too, I'm told) they shut down for about four hours

in the PM, and then stay open late at night. This is to escape the

heat.

You know, back in high school, we had one of those vending machines that

dropped a cup and then the ice and then the liquid. One of the flavours

was 'non-alcoholic cold duck'. And this was central California!
