Daivd, if I may be so bold, I must disagree with you. This woman was most

definitely hurt by your approach to her. But her letter to you also shows

that she indeed is one of the few that make any kind of discussion about

weight a " political " discussion. All of us here are either morbidly obese or

are ex-morbidly obese. All of us here have struggled with issues surrounding

our obesity. There are a small minority who believe that any discussion

about weight loss is a discussion that is almost morally wrong and is not

politically correct. They believe that fat acceptance is the way to go. The

very fact that this person believes that the weight loss industry loves

weight loss operations is ludicrous. We all know that the opposite is true.

I am not saying that you should walk up to every obese person you see and

start talking about WLS. I merely think that you happened to approach a

person who not only has issues of obesity to deal with but also issues of a

political nature as well. By the way, although I am happily married and the

mother of a wonderful daughter in college, I am an avowed feminist. But

feminism has nothing to do with obesity and acceptance. We are talking about

health.

, I'm really sorry you had such an awful experience but I still think

you did the right thing in approaching this woman. She might have had the

opposite reaction and your deed might have completely turned her life

around. You certainly weren't sexist or any of the things she accused you

of being. Don't be so hard on yourself, you did what you thought was the

right thing and certainly didn't mean to hurt her feelings. She doesn't

sound like a real pleasant person to me. She could have given you the

benefit of the doubt! Each of us is responsible for our own feelings. She

obviously feels bad enough about herself to react in such a harsh manner.

Once again, I think you did a very brave thing and would hate to think that

someone else may not have the opportunity to benefit from your knowledge

and experience!

I feel so BAD for you I can hardly stand it. You did nothing wrong in what

you did. I guess I am amazed that someone so severely handicapped by obesity

could be so blinded and angry about their condition to turn on you like she

did. And who are these so called friends of hers to fuel her rage? Of course

maybe they are afraid of her. I am glad you shared what happened in this

whole thing because it does make me think twice about approaching someone

like you did. What if you walked up to a smoker and handed them a note about

a great way to quit smoking? Would there be the potential for them to rage

at you like she did? Wow, I don't even know what to think of all this....

don't allow yourself to feel bad about yourself. You are a wonderful

Nothing ventured, nothing gained . . . growth and change are often

painful. I think the whole situation is a pretty sad commentary on our

society in general, not you, her! This crap about not judging is baloney .

.. . we all make judgments every couple of minutes and they keep us faithful

to our morals and our life's compass . . . her talking about judgments as if

it were possible not to judge at all is B.S. It is she not you who made a

negative judgment. All that aside, my surgeon did say at support group that

he will not originate the subject of gastric bypass with his morbidly obese

general surgery patients. The reason he gave is that people that come up

with WLS as a possible solution and approach him are always more successful

and compliant patients then those who have been instructed to do it by a well

meaning relative ect . . .

But thanks for sharing your experience, I know how hurt you must feel

to be that misunderstood . . . approaching somebody that qualifies for WLS

will never cross my mind again thanks to your sharing your experience!

My answer to the above is, " Yes. " When this thread first hit [with the

movie theatre where you can order food from your seat!] my initial response

was to be careful. What I saw happening was the approached individual would

become upset/hurt because what you have done is *noticed* they are fat.

Once that occurs rational thinking is lost until the sting wears off.

How quickly so many forget. Do any of you really believe that approaching a

stranger is going to be something that will be received joyously with open

arms? The best that could come from a situation like this is hurt and the

planting of the seed for future reference.

I love the smoking analogy as I can relate to both. I get very angry when I

am out and someone comments on how smoking is bad for me and why don't I try

the " patch. " Do they think I live in a vacuum? Do they question for one

second that I don't know smoking is bad for me? Do they think I would still

be smoking if I was able to quit? Do they think I never have seen a

newspaper, television or listened to a radio where I heard about the patch.

Maybe you need to try and remember how the " stares " of strangers hurt. Try

to remember when friends and loved ones [let alone strangers] told you being

fat was so unhealthy and you should go on a diet. There is little

difference here with the exception that the intent was good.

Just my .02, but I am able to empathize...

I feel so bad about your encounter with someone with such a level of denial

that WLS probably would not be successful since her head is so far up her

butt! I feel more pain for you and your kind and sincere efforts to help than

I do for her. Her insensitivity and anger, and underneath it all her fear,

was fueled by her ignorance and that of her so called friends.

I understand how you feel when you see a morbidly obese person. I get very

sad and often tear up when I see someone who looks like I used to look and

who I'm sure feels like I used to feel. We did not have WLS to look good. We

look good because we had WLS. We had WLS to save our lives. People who are

content with obesity are just afraid. Weight for them may have many purposes.

We can't know what purpose morbid obesity has for those we don't know. That

makes approaching strangers risky business. I don't do it but if they give me

any hint or even ask a question they are in for the whole shpeal, including

pictures!

Don't take this personally. You did a good deed, a mitzvah (that's Yiddish

for a good deed). We can't cure everyone, but that doesn't stop us from

feeling and caring. Don't stop that!

Take care.

I am so sorry to hear how the whole story went. I think it was wrong of her

to just assume you were 'evil' in your intentions and I hope you know and

intentions. Here's to you buddie - I still think you done good! :)

I need to put my .02 in again. I am also a reformed smoker (that was worth

40 pounds each on two occasions) but the analogy still works. My point,

again is that the note was private. It wasn't like the spotlight was

shining for the world to see. I have given info to several people. Part of

them started researching the procedures. Some said they wouldn't even

consider it. No one thought I was being discriminatory, or if they did,

they didn't throw a hissy fit over it. Suzan.

Well, I sorta think that her response is a reflection of her current

support network... I too had planted a seed with someone I knew & she

said she was seriously thinking about going for the wls, but next time

I saw her she expressed some of the same words I hear from fat

acceptance groups.... unhealthy choice, body mutilation, etc...

someone in this frame of mind does not seem open or willing to

explore... I have come across SO MUCH negativity about the surgery, &

believe there are many people who feel so strongly that they actively

( & successfully) discourage others. These people are doctors, and

people on the net who have been taught a one-sided opinion about the

surgery. The opinions are mostly bred by fear and lack of

information... If its any help, she is probably feeling better after

having responding to you. We all know her perception was not

anything like your intention (which was only to share/spread some

happiness you have found) .. take comfort in knowing your intentions

were the best ... hope you feel better soon.

=======> I still run into many obese people on the net who are doing

the optifast, etc... I hear their painful stories relating to diet

failures and eating addictions. I too become so sad for the obese

people... there is a network of obese people that stays in those obese

groups & discourages anything but a " healthy " lifestyle of proper

eating and exercise. While there is nothing wrong with that, I

think most of us here believe that alone would not help us accomplish

the huge job of losing and maintaining a significant loss. I do

believe that people have to really want WLS because I think people

should be knowledgable about related health concerns as well as the

many different sugical variations. I guess I side with the seed

planters in certain settings (doctor, or a setting related to obesity)

because there are many who don't know about it, or maybe who haven't

thought about investigating the issue. . People can always reject the

seed. I agree with Bob. The surgery saves lives. Given a

different person, its really quite possible that 's stranger

would have asked questions... maybe its the setting like Dan &

had that helps?

I can't tell you how much I appreciate everyone's helping me through this.

I think the long and short of it for me is to not hesitate when I get the

emails from people perusing my surgeon's site or this list, or when I get

phone calls from a local weight loss center. (They're a diet mill, and even

they realize that past a certain point only WLS can help.)

We all have a right to privacy and I invaded hers. She was with someone

else and was in a position to be more embarrassed than if alone. I didn't

know why she was on crutches. On and on.

But, I have definitely learned a tough lesson from it. There are plenty of

people out there who are desperate for information. It's the success of our

lives, the medical industry and the media's job to inform. (Thank you

Roseanne and Carnie.) I've got a year to figure out how to handle the

elation when I have my third re-birthday!

Good observations...how soon we forget how it felt. Now if she had called

and was having surgery next week, would we be seeing this side at all?

,

please do not think I am trying to make you feel bad. I am not. But I for

one have to side with the woman you approached. You did make certain

assumptions about her by assuming surgery was something she might want or be

interested in. And I have noticed that since your post, most of the people

on this list seem to have forgotten how they would have thought if a

STRANGER would have approached and tried to give them information about how

to lose weight. I can understand her hurt and even her anger. You pointed

out what you perceived as a defect in her without thinking how that may

affect her. Sure you did it with the best of intentions but I am sure the

woman who approached me in the grocery store when I was 348 pounds and

trying yet another diet thought she was doing the best thing when she

started questioning everything in my buggy and wanted to know how I could

allow myself to get that big. Like I had a choice.

Granted you meant well. But you approached her a trim man. Not as someone on

her level. How many times have we all been approached by thinner healthier

people who had the answer and weren't shy about telling us? How many times

did these people say they just KNEW what we were going through? And how many

times did such people's words of advice embarrass, hurt, or anger us? More

than we might want to admit.

It is different if people ask how you lose it. It is different if someone

overweight wants to know about the surgery. That puts the control in their

hands. And takes it from the hands others. That is one of the reasons I have

been against approaching strangers and trying to " convert " them to weight

loss surgery. Maybe the woman did over react in your or anyone's opinion

however I do believe she had that right. She felt attacked and cornered and

it was just another injustice to her. So she took a few days and then called

and laid into you because she had people who believed in her -- that

vindicated her feelings of anger.

Please folks this isn't a flame of but rather it is understanding

where this woman was coming from. I know approached her with the best

of intentions however in doing so a woman ended up being hurt because she

wasn't ready for the information. So folks before approaching strangers, put

yourself in their shoes. And then realize, you can't be in their shoes

because you do not know what is going on in their lives. All you see is

their outside appearance. And you are judging them by that -- something

which you would have hated if it was being done with you and probably still

do.

I appreciate your heartfelt honesty and agree with you. It was a lapse in

judgment and my lesson has been learned. I too thought about all the people

who gave me diet advice, etc. and had all the answers. Like if you had the

answer to overweight, wouldn't you be a zillionaire and not going through my

grocery basket???? I still get crazy when I see the " lose weight now ask me

how " signs on telephone poles. Thank god for caller id because I want to

call everyone of them. I wish it hadn't happened. I'm forgiving myself,

moving on and saving up my " samaritanism " for the many people who are ready

to ask about WLS.

Thanks,

Please please please do not think I am bashing you. I was not and am not. I

am sorry for what happened to you. My problem with this situation stems from

how some people on this list are reacting. I do know that your heart was in

the right place. Just a suggestion -- have you contacted the local newspaper

and told them your story. If you did that and included your email address or

phone number, you could spread the word and educate people on a broad basis

and reach hundreds. Then anyone who wanted to know more could contact you.

Just a suggestion. Take care of yourself okay? *hugs*

I don't feel bashed at all. I appreciate hearing all sides of this issue.

My heart was in the right place, but perhaps my head wasn't !!!

I think this topic is great for this list since it will all come up for us

repeatedly. The thread had a lot of information pro and con and plenty for

people to think about. If I had read this thread the week before, I bet my

actions would have been different!

I would really hate to think that my need for help turns this into friction

between all of us.

Thanks to everyone for the care, advice and attention.

I need to add my 2cents. I commend for his courage and commitment to this

way of life. However, My alarm went off when I read the original post because

If someone had approached me when I was at my biggest, I would have been deeply

hurt. I would feel that that person doesn't know who I am and what my story is

so how do they have the nerve to say anything.

I only share my story to those that ask. I have a hard time not telling the

world about this surgery. I want everyone who feels helpless and hopeless to get

the help and get hope back.

What have I done???

Just what was recommended, I was written up in a News article, the local

Hospital paper and share my web story when the opportunity is presented. Yes,

it is hard sometimes to not approach someone who is obviously suffering from

morbid obesity and all the co morbidities, but I MUST remember where I came from

and my defenses were ALWAYS up. So, , you have a lot of courage and I am

glad you shared what happened.

I am glad I have taken my approach this way, I know I don't take chances but in

this case, I am playing it safe...

Hugs to all of you,

It sounds as if you are dealing with this woman's hurt and your own hurt

well. And your healing has begun. While I am sorry your benevolent offer of

help was not well received, I am grateful for the learning that all of us on

this list have gained as a result. I appreciate your posts, as well as those

of all the others, especially 's, who reopened my eyes to how I would

have felt in this woman's stead.

But, I think most people overlooked a very important part of your post, the

portion I extracted above. This is the part that caught my attention the

most. Your pharmacist grilled you about WLS on behalf of some of this woman's

relatives. I wonder, " Why? " Do you think, " Maybe, just maybe, the seed has

been planted " ?

I do not think that this is over yet, . It may be a while, but I would

not be surprised if you heard from her again, with a more inquiring point of

view.

Thank you for the opportunity to reevaluate what I have said/will say to

others.

Hi ... I'm so sorry you are upset about all this. ... . I

think if I perceived a bashing, I would also be upset.

it wasn't my perception or intention to bash this woman.... I also

didn't perceive that any of us were (and I won't argue that I might l

have my head up my but too :o) My perception of our posts was that

we desired to rally around who we all knew was upset ... just

human nature & group dynamics to support the one you know is hurt vs.

the one you don't. I perceived Bob's post to be a humorous slant,

making light of the situation... I just didn't take it to heart as you

did. I believe the focus of the posts were more on and his

feelings rather than bashing her...

Also, I was feeling was sympathy for her perception of 's

intent, and the general perceptions in the world about WLS.... some of

which is based on very unfortunate stories (read 's post). I'm

not saying she is not entitled to feel as she did, just that I was

sadened that it included misunderstanding. Hope you are taking care

of your baby :o)

Trish,

Thanks. I am upset because I identify too strongly with the woman (that and

the fact that my hormones are extremely elevated at this point doesn't help)

and I perceived everyone as wanting to bash her in an effort to make

feel better. Not that I am against us supporting -- he did what he

thought was right at the time -- but I think sometimes we start acting how

the world perceives us. meaning since most of us are thin -- or at least

normal size -- we tend to forget what it was like to be heavy at times

because the world doesn't treat us as such anymore. Does that make sense?

We may be normal size, but we can never forget what we once were. I still think

people are staring at me in a crowd and then I realize I'm not 410 pounds any

more. My wife says they are staring at me 'cause now I have huge ears! They used

to be hidden behind my huge cheeks! Some days you just can't win!

Of course you make a lot of sense! I've been thinking about what

you're saying here, & it got me thinking again about my own memories

of how I used to be. I know that I was traumatized by some of the

events related to my obesity... that those events drive some of my

thoughts and behaviors today.... and anyway, I agree with you & I

too have occassionally perceived some of " us " (OK, me too :o)) spout

as though we have the best particular method of anything (not smoking,

exercise or whatever) ..... and I agree that there is a best practices

for for communicating information about the surgery or anything else

we want to spout about... I'm not exactly sure of all of it, but I

learned a lot from 's experience. BTW, I thought your idea about

contacting the newpapers/media about your successes was really good...

an excellent way to help others! Take care !

Good point. didn't stand up in the middle of the theater and shout

" Your Fat and I'm Not! " It was a private note and a heartfelt offer to help.

I bashed the woman not for being fat, but for being rude and nasty. How could

I bash someone for being like I was, and in many ways still am? What I wasn't

was rude.

An analogous story: I was a probation officer for many years and I had an

Although you meant well, approaching her made you no different from

an " herbalifer " or any other person that uses invasive tactics to

promote what they " believe " will " save your life " or be the key to

solving your " problems " .

I've found the best people to help are those that want to help

themselves. They show they want by seeking it out; posting on

boards such as this or attending support groups. It seems you have

benefitted greatly from your surgery and want to share it will

probably be less emotional and painful if you share in venues were

people have sought help as opposed to approaching them.

Our surgeon holds a monthly support group and it's helpful when

members 1, 2 even 4 years out, continue to attend to share with

newbies.

Don't beat yourself too hard but, remember the emotional struggle

that obese people face with people constantly bombarding them

with " all you have to do is... " or " try this it will work... " type

messages. We all know you meant well but, to an " outsider " your

tactics can easily be misconstrued as presumptuous and insulting as

you have seen.
