Frisium is in the class of drugs known as benzoidapines (like Valium) and I

imagine it is addictive. My daughter was on it at one stage and it worked

brilliantly for 6 weeks, then lost effect. This is very common with that

drug and can result in higher and higher doses being needed.

For this reason, it is often cycled with other similar drugs to avoid

dependence and loss of effectiveness. We had lots of problems after

withdrawing Frisium, however, now we use it occasionally as an emergency

drug to break a run of seizures.

My daughter, Asha has been on Frisium for many years. It is addictive

and is known to give good initial control that wears off and needs

the dose increasing. This is what has happened to Asha over the

years. She is on a high dose now.I want her off it and hope we can do

so in the future now she is on the diet. It is a good drug to use to

break up clusters on an occasional basis. Side effects? She has been

on it with a combination of so many other drugs I don't know what

she would be like without.

Tasha,

went straight from klonopin (clonazepam or rivotril here) to

frisium/clobazam. Bit different though, because he had only been on the

klonopin a short while (2 weeks from memory) before we dumped it - turned

him hyper and worsened his seizures big time.

The clobazam I don't think did a lot either, but we still kept him on it a

long while (a year), big regrets on that one. He was on other meds as well,

so don't know really what side effects it had for him. It was however not as

sedating for as the other benzodiazepines (diazepam and nitrazepam),

except for when we got up into the high dose range - at one stage he went as

high as 35 mgs per day, at age 4.

I believe the clobazam is easier to wean than the klonopin though, and we

ended up taking off 5 mgs per fortnight. In hindsight, this was too quick,

and we did see withdrawl seizures day 3-5 of each reduction, but he was

pretty poorly controlled back then (pre diet) anyway. We had him down to 10

mgs when the first chickenpox dose hit, causing status, requiring large IV

diazepam doses which replaced the clobazam, kind of like a 'forced' wean. He

went home on high dose oral diazepam instead. Nearly had that weaned when

the chickenpox hit again, this time nitrazepam replaced the diazepam

following a midazolam infusion.

We're reducing the nitrazepam at the moment, not a pleasant experience, wish

we could put him to sleep for a month to wean it!!!

All the benzos has been on have always been used with him in

conjunction with at least 2 other AEDs, so not sure what part med toxicity

has played in the side effects we have seen (drooling, ataxia, dysarthria

etc).

I am very surprised to hear that a Dr would say that any one of the

benzodiazepines are not addictive, it can take longer for the 'addiction' to

set in some compared to others, but my guess would be 2 weeks maximum before

you see withdrawl problems if not weaned very very slowly.

Maybe he meant not 'as addicitive' as klonopin, or else he intends to get

Isabel very quickly on and off the clobazam, but I can't see that being a

very safe way to do it.

What about trying the wean in hospital with IV diazepam or lorazepam,

sometimes a few regular quick high dose 'hits' to hopefully break the status

can be more effective than transferring from one oral benzodiazepine to

another. This may avoid the 'benzo merry go round' we have had on for

2 years. Is it only from med weans Isabela goes into status, what is her

control like otherwise?
