About making a documentary of your own -- wouldn't it be nice to see one that shows our kids in a positive light? Everything is so damned depressing. Boone's mostly happy (these days -- hope I didn't just jinx that). I mean, if people saw them as real kids instead of as badly behaved and pitiful charity cases -- as they're usually portrayed, maybe there would be a little more understanding and acceptance. I'm not saying ignore the bad parts of autism, but include the good parts about it too. (I know -- some days there ARE no good parts). Of course this documentary would really piss off the sju list supermoms. They want nothing positive to ever be said about autism because it doesn't fit their agenda. I thin they're agenda is to make everybody as miserable as they are. I was flamed mercilessly for saying that Boone is wonderfully autistic. He is, but it sure pisses them off to hear it. One of them told me I was giving false hope to parents of newly diagnosed children and that was dangerous and irresponsible. How can saying I love my child unconditionally damage anyone??? Because you're causing them to know how selfish they are that they can't love their children the same way. JMHO Jacquie

Guest guest
> > The line in the movie that everyone gasped to: (and I'm paraphrasing) > > > > " Autistic children feel about their mothers the way the Nazi's > > felt about the Jews " > > I don't want to start a fight at all, but to be honest, what hit me about Bettelheim is that he had seen in autistic kids that same fear/need-to-withdraw-to-survive that he had apparently felt in the concentration camps...I can see that. I have often thought that many kids with severely compromised sensory systems live with the same kind of fear that kids who grow up in war zones do...if he had taken that and tried to figure out WHY they were afraid and withdrawn, autism treatment could have been way ahead of where it was during his lifetime...it's sad that he was so emotionally damaged that all he could do was get mad about it and blame the parents...he could have done so much good, but he wasn't able to *see* what he was really seeing...instead, he interpreted it in line with his own past pain. Don't misunderstand me, I agree that what happened to mothers of kids with autism as a result of this is absolutely wretched, and that someone somewhere should have noticed that this guy had some serious emotional scars...he never should have been taken seriously, and certainly *someone* should have recognized that these mothers loved their kids...it's so obvious listening to them recalling their lives. Why wasn't anyone else out there looking at autism so that it would have become clear that this guy was so far off-base? It's almost like he acted out his hatred and anger for those who imprisoned him on the parents of these kids---way wrong, but sadly understandable given his past, you know? Guest guest
> Because they discouraged obsessions, or because they encouraged stims? > > Jacquie I'm not sure they saw any " stims " -- Boone's stims are odd body movements -- difficult to explain -- sort of a twisty jump. He only does this at home. They discouraged everything " Boone " and said I was feeding into his obsessions (as if it were a bad thing). They wanted him to draw shapes and he made the rectangles and squares into flags -- they thought that was obsessing. (I call it creativity). They also taught him to brush his teeth with chocolate pudding, forced him to look up while walking through a room full of fans, which is not a good idea if you want him to pay any attention to you. They insisted on hand-over-hand -- which he detests. I quit using ST and OT at this place when they told me I had to do something about his behavior.(Hello??? He's autistic -- that's why he's coming to this scam joint in the first place!!!) They were doing more harm than good in my opinion.
