Guest guest
I recently found out I will be terminated from my job because I'm diabetic and that has caused a huge increase in the insurance rates the company pays. The company is less than 15 employees and is exempt from the ADA. I was wondering if anyone else had horror stories of how diabetes has hurt them outside of the obvious physical conditions. I would also like to hear how you over came any adversity you have faced. Just a little research from a nosy amature writer Thanks,
Guest guest
, If you can prove this then you can sue them for a lot of money and many lawyers would take on such a case and not expect you to put up any money. I would look into it. How did you find this out? I wonder if you can prove this. Its hard if they are doing a mass lay off etc.... Why would diabetes hurt them? My good friend was fired from a pre school a week after telling everyone she was pregnant. She sued them and won a lot of money.... sus -----Original Message----- From: I recently found out I will be terminated from my job because I'm diabetic and that has caused a huge increase in the insurance rates the company pays. Guest guest
MESSAGE EDITED BY MODERATOR. I have looked into it. Companies with less than 15 employees are exempt from the American's with Disabilities Act. The rates the employer pays for insurance for all the employees in the company (7 others) went up 67% largely due to my chronic condition. I do have proof of this, but there is not much I can do. I posted this as an example I am looking for more stories of negative reactions people have experienced because they have diabetes and they ways they have coped with it. sort of a chicken-soup for the Diabetic kind of story. I myself am looking at this as a good time to go back to school and finish my MBA. Sus Wrote: How did you find this out? I wonder if you can prove this. Guest guest
It may be exempt from the Federal ADA, but not necessarily the State ADA. Look into it. Guest guest
I don't know what state you live in but here in Alabama they don't have to give a reason to fire someone, just fire. Guest guest
no reason given, found this out through other (verified) sources. > > I recently found out I will be terminated from my job because I'm > > diabetic and that has caused a huge increase in the insurance > rates the > > company pays. Guest guest
I have coverage. No problem. When I started this thread I was looking for other stories from people who have had negative reactions from employers, spouces and friends. I just used my situation as an example. Thanks though. > You by federal law can keep your insurance (I have done this) with Cobra > but you do have to pay a much larger premium with them but with diabetes you > need it. I just used my situation as an example. LOL.. you keep saying that, , and we all keep trying to help you with your (former) employer! I think it's great that you are going to use your time off work to finish your MBA. I'm also going back for my master's this January. I've had no negative reactions from employers or friends. I think diabetes is (unfortunately) very common, plus it's not contagious.. so people have an easier time dealing with it than with, say, HIV or something. Employers are aware of anti-discrimination laws and would be foolish to try to deny employment to someone with diabetes - I'm sure it happens, just not as often as it may have many years ago. Despite it all, we're actually very fortunate and have much to be thankful for, wouldn't you say? Peace, Jacki (who is very happy to fasting this month - with no adverse reactions!) Guest guest
How is the fasting going? I went one week once (way back when) drove me nuts not to have coffee. > LOL.. you keep saying that, , and we all keep trying to help you > with your (former) employer! Guest guest
Interesting; when I lived in Kuwait I was told that diabetics were exempt from fasting during Ramadan. Guest guest
I'm sure I do. Just not as many as I thought I would. Maybe I'm not doing the secret handshake right... > With 17,000,000 diabetics in US you may not have met them but you pass them every day.
