Well folks, I hate to be the sour voice in the group, but making such a

provision accessible to the internet would most likely invite attempts to

override the security and print a certificate and wallet card without being

authorized. Ever wonder why credit card companies don't email your

PIN/passwords? And please don't say the security couldn't be broken.

Someone, somewhere, somehow would find a way to do it.

Let's take a step back for a second. You are right, security can be

broken. But there is really no security now! How hard do you think it

would be for even a moderately skilled person to duplicate the current

card on a PC, with a printer? So, that's obviously not an issue,

because it could easily be done now. These id's are not secure ids.

Look at all the work states go through for drivers licenses, and those

aren't even secure, even with holograms and such there are fakes out

there. And credit cards fight that all the time.

I am not advocating going to a format even as secure as driver's

licenses, because that would REALLY increase cost, and that's the

question here! But, realize security isn't really much of a concern

here; if it were, we'd be in a world of hurt already!

Maybe a third party firm could be engaged, or authorized or whatever, to

do nice cards for those who want them, for a fee? All that would take

would be an RFP, and grant authority to do it, so they would be

legitimate and not counterfits. I have a nice, 8 x 10 certificate of

my Amateur Radio Extra Class license that was done by a third party.

It's not really official, but it looks good, and I have by wallet card

(plain, but utilitarian) issued by the FCC if I need to prove anything.

I guess maybe I don't understand the big deal here. Who cares what the cards

look like? In the 23 years I've been doing this, I've never had to produce

my card except during vehicle inspections. The people doing those

inspections work for the state, and couldn't really care what the card looks

like as long as it's valid. Wall certificate? Maybe I have grown complacent

in my old age, but I do not possess an " I love me " wall. The wife tells me

if she puts all my certificates on the wall, it would be like wallpaper

anyway. So ask yourself, who do I show my card to anyway? Am I willing to

pay another 20-25 bucks for a fancy piece of paper? I don't think so.

Besides, it's not what the paper looks like, it's the person that carries it

that makes the impression.

As others are so quick to say.........That's just my opinion on the matter.

Now lets get back to the serious issues of EMS: like choosing new watering

holes for San 's EMS conference this year. :-)
