Guest guest
Yes, drinking with meals can cause dumping in some of us lucky ones. I've seen many who try to " drink " the symptoms away, but it works just the opposite and increases the misery! Thanks, www.vitalady.com
Guest guest
I am not sure who was gracious enough to warn us of drinking and dumping [i think it was Sue], but apparently she is right. I tried to stop for a day, but found it impossible. How do you all do it? I can't swallow without the drink. Mind you I am not a big drinker... more of a sipper. Doctors have always complained that my daily fluid intake is way too low. I guess I am going to have to practice. Is Dan still around? I have yoo-hooed him, but haven't heard anything. Maybe he found some kitties to play with. He too was getting the heart palps like me... from time to time. I wonder if he drinks and eats. Are most of you NOT drinking at all with before/after meals? Please share how you manage this. Thanks! Barbra dumping Yes, drinking with meals can cause dumping in some of us lucky ones. Guest guest
For over a year I never ate and drank. I noticed in recent weeks I am grabing my husbands drink (usually water) and taking an ever so small sip, just to wet my whistle so to speak. I dont have any problems with it. If anything I may be washing my food down a little faster but no heart palpations. I do drink all the way up to my diner time as the water just floats right through me so i have no problem eating right after a drink. Im sure all the surgeries have their little idiosyncrocencies (Im sure I butured that word) I know I was given a 2 ounce pouch, with 1cm opening, and only 16 inches bypassed. So could this be why I dont dump when I drink and eat? I dont do it often and the amount I sip is usually no more than 1 regular swallowful too. At a 14 months post op I still eat about 1/2 cup to 2/3 cup size servings of most foods too. Dont know if this comparrison helps you or not Barbara since I dont dump. Guest guest
> >Are most of you NOT drinking at all with before/after meals? Please share how you manage this. Thanks! >Barbra All our surgeons do things so differently, but mine allowed no food or drink - not even water - just IV's while I was in the hospital. I was released in 60hr. because I was such a trooper up walking and showering, so when I went home, I was told to do just clear liquids for another two/three days, then it followed with soft liquids for several weeks. 8 days had gone by that I had either nothing but IV or clear liquids. I attribute this to my lack of cravings by ridding the body of toxins and chemicals and ability to not drink and eat at the same time, since all I was doing was drinking. when food was reintroduced it was soupy, mashed, semi-liquid stuff anyhow. I was warned [from the lists] to never eat and drink at the same time and I never started it. It was hard in the beginning, especially if a hunk of meat seemed dry, but it was probably easier then than it would be now. So, I do not drink when I eat. I know another patient of my docs and she has never been able to curb the drinking and she is now 1yr. out and has not lost as much as has hoped and is thinking the only difference between us is the drinking and that she needs to stop. first off, I don't like comparisons, but I have been a little surprised that she didn't lose more considering she started an easy 50# higher - I just have to wonder if it's the drinking because otherwise we had done most everything exactly the same. Sue even in the Seven Secrets of Slim People book - which is not a diet book, they say not to eat and drink at the same time which I think for Americans is a foreign idea. Guest guest
Barbra: It takes a little getting used to, but my doc says fluids up until the time you eat, but not for an hour afterward. Sipping while you eat continually rinses the food from the pouch. The idea is to fill the tiny pouch and for it to stay full as long as possible. Sipping after the food is in the pouch but has not passed can stretch the stomach. I like coffee first thing in the morning, then breakfast, so getting in enough water can be a challenge. But I firmly agree/believe that fluids while or after eating is not a good thing. Guest guest
Hi , By process of elimination I feel pretty certain that the fluid [even *MY* little sips] has to be what has caused me the heart palpitations. There is no other answer. After reading the post from the doctor [that I copied to the list] of how the liquid combined with food causes dumping I am going to have to believe it. This means that at least with me.... I experience " dumping " not from sugars or what I eat buy rather how quickly the food drops into and past the system. I have heard [and hear] many talk about not drinking because it will stretch the pouch. That certainly makes sense to me. As you know, being the *Bad Girl* on the list I have always sipped with my meals. I am 13 and 10 years post and if my pouch stretched it had to be very very tiny from the start. What I mean by that is I was able to take all the weight off and to date I still can't consume anywhere near a normal size portion [except once a year when I am in " correction " mode and then I can eat like the old days!]. I am going to start concentrating heavily on this and see if this does have an effect on the palps. Thanks so much! For all the lurkers in the background... I rarely suggest, but I strongly recommend no drinking with or after meals if possible. All this makes so much *common sense* Take care of you~ Barbra dumping > > > > > > Yes, drinking with meals can cause dumping in some of us lucky ones. Guest guest
I don't dump either, have a big bypass & big pouch. My doc says lack of dumping (or lack of) is just a biological difference between people .... but I suppose I will always speculate about the causes. I wish it was something that science could control. Trish >For over a year I never ate and drank. My grandmother used to never drink with her meals and she said this was the best way of digesting food. My surgeon told me that we can not eat sufficient meals with drinking also at the meal. So fluids wait until either before or 1/2 to an hour after meals. Believe me, I run for the water after a meal, but I wait to get enough food into my stomach. ===== Beth Watts Nov. 1992 RNY Procedure Norman s Fort Lauderdale, FL __________________________________________________
