Guest guest
I'm taking vitamin C, E, B12 (for neuropathy), a multivitamin and I just started taking chromium picolinate which is supposed to lower bg levels. So far not but I'll give it a couple of weeks before giving up on it. The C and E are to boost my immune system and the multivitamin to fill in any gaps in my eating. Guest guest
LOL noooo! Please don't take them because they can actually make you sick. Since you aren't " bleeding monthly " or " growing a baby " the high amount of iron can be toxic. Guest guest
, I am also almost 3 weeks out (April 3) and I am up against the same issue. I have only lost 12 lbs and the last 4 days the scale is stuck at 218. I have no ideas since I eat 2 bites at each meal, drink my protein shakes and take my vits. I get in about 50+ ozs of water in each day. I guess I am writing so you know that you are not the only one in the situation and I would also love to get some advice as to get moving in the right direction. Shika > > Hi everyone. Guest guest
Congrats on your exercise efforts. It's important to develop a regular exercise routine early out. Exercise increases your metabolism and reduces muscles loss from weight loss. Robyn > > > > > > > > Hi everyone. I am having issues. I am almost 3 > > > weeks out and my > > > > weightloss stopped. Guest guest
I hope that some of the members who have had the surgery will respond to you. I'm still pre-op and you have mentioned one of my biggest fears - gaining it all back. I hope I'm not being too nosey when I ask.... did you follow the rules your doctor gave you? No drinking with meals, eat til you're full but don't stretch the pouch, drink 8 glasses of water a day and take yer vitamins and all that stuff? Are u exercising? Because they say that the surgery isn't a magic wand - it's just a tool and you have to still do all the right things. I've heard that some people gain back all their weight, but it seems that those who do aren't following the " rules " . I'm not judging you - I'm just asking if you followed them so I know if someone can follow all the rules and still gain back weight. Mindy --------------------------------- How low will we go? Guest guest
I am a trained clinical social worker and a administrative social worker by profession. When I had my surgery in 2004 I was in for a shock when I had to deal with not being able to drink water...the new overloaded sex drive I had...not being able to eat when I got depressed...the difference in the way people treated me as I lost the weight...people who had known me all my life. So I go to my surgeon, who is a really cool person...I would recommend him to anyone in the NY/LI area...and I say you need a social worker on your staff. And he looks at me and is listening. So I even write him up a social work plan because people who have this surgery are in need of serious help on how to adjust their way of thinking and their way of doing things to on a mental and emotional level. He reads it and is impressed. But nothing comes of it. Why? Because the doctors are only concerned with the medical aspect of it all. Now don't get me wrong...my surgery has a support group and is very sensitive to his patients. But he is not a clinician...I almost hit him in the head one day with my pocket book...I told him that I was having this serious craving for peanust chews and that I needed them to keep me out of trouble (The peanut chews were helping me with the sex drive...if you know what I mean...lol) anyway...so he looks at me...and the he says well stop eating the peanut chews and remember...don't get pregnant...that is when I almost threw the pocket book. Telling me to not eat the peanust chews is not helping me deal with my sexual overdrive...and it wouldn't be helping me avoid sexual relations with folks who were not right for me. Well of course I prayed a lot and was able to get through it...but it wasn't because my doctor warned me ahead of time. There needs to be a social work piece in the programs for weight loss surgery. A serious piece. Many patients need life coaches. To help them get through. That is why this group is so very important to me. I can talk to folks who understand...and I can get information that I need. And there is 24 hour support. So important. I will share something with you that I plan to put in a book in the near future. We have learn how to stop thinking with our " Fat Minds " now that we have smaller bodies. We have to develop a way to get out of the " Fat Mentality " . All the things that we should not do after surgery are things we did within our " Fat Mentality " ...Eating fast, eating lost of carbs, gulping down liquid, overeating, eating through our emotions. That is a " Fat Mentality " . We need to learn how to deal with ourselves and the life that we are destined to live in. It is not easy but it is definitely doable. I have to admit that I have a large French Vanilla Capucinno sitting next to me as I write. But I came here to get some support so that I will be able to stop when I need to...which is right now. If this group were not here...what would I do...of course pray, but I realize that God Manifests himself through the actions of people. This group is one of Gods wonderful manifestations. It is up to us to help ourselves and in turn help each other. I am ready to get away from my " Fat Mentality " ...are you with me? Guest guest
I totally agree with the " fat mentality " idea. It's one of the things that worries me about how I'll behave after surgery. When I was a teenager I thought I was HUGE, and consequently I ate until I became huge. I look back on pics of me when I was 16-18 and think " what were u thinking??? " I was a size 16 - bigger than most the other girls in my class, but in pics I look the same size because I'm a very big boned girl and can carry a bit more weight than others. Anyhow - I just worry that after surgery I'll still have problems during depression - that's why I'm starting some ways of dealing with it NOW so I'll have other " tools " under my belt besides the pouch. Like journaling and writing in here. I agree that this group is a manifistation of angels or a higher power - after all God helps those who help themselves. Mindy lovenystyle68 wrote: need. Guest guest
I'm surprised there wasn't a social worker on staff. Especialy since I'd figure they'd want to check you out mentally BEFORE surgery as well as be available for you post-op. I had to go through a few tests and interviews with a social worker on staff. The surgeon I went through in Grand Rapids, MI is part of a large group and a hospital that has a special section devoted to bariatric surgery. They have social workers, dieticians, Exercise Physiologists, physician assistants and probably other people tucked away or easily available that I don't know about. Here's a website with their staff: http://www.mmpc.com/doctor/specialty/4. It's a shame that your surgeon didn't see the importance of the mental aspects of this life changing surgery. Good Luck! > > > > I had this surgey May 2003 lost 130 now 3 years later I have gained > > back 70 of it. Guest guest
Hi, you make a great point about having a social worker help you... I have a therapist that I am starting to FINALLY open up with about my eating and what brought me to where I am today. It is so important and it should come as part of the procedure. I am fighting my thinking and trying to change to the new. I have been fighting espeically this last week. I am down 6 pounds in the last 4 days and it is a joy...but, it's not the joy I was feeling before when this all started, I KNOW that if I don't start changing my thinking soon, this will all be for nothing. Shauna 343/64/279 279 haha love it! I waited all month to get to the 270's Thanks for being here to let me share!!!! This group has helped me so much. Guest guest
I did go to a psychiatrist because that is part of the approval process for the surgery through my HMO. I think that is a big problem here in NY...and probably many places...HMO's the doctor's stick to what they know which is the medical aspect of it. HMO's don't care about an ounce of prevention...they just care about the pound of cure and giving it at the cheapest cost. I have yet to hear of a solid social work program here in NY within the Weight Loss Programs. Yes many doctors have support groups, but even those are based more around the medical aspects and not the mental. My surgeon's assistant runs the group...really wonderful person...and she wanted me to get involved but it didn't work well with my schedule at work. Then my personal doctor saw a need for it within the clinic I with, because she has other patients who have had the surgery and asked me if I was willing to voluntarily run a support group. I said yes of course and when she presented it to the Administration of the clinic...they said no. I am sure that was about insurance issues but it is sad that patients want to be proactive and physician recognizes that there is a need and the HMO that we pay for will not honor that...and has the nerve to have no nutrional program within the center. There is someting definitely wrong with this picture. > > > > > > I had this surgey May 2003 lost 130 now 3 years later I have > gained > > > back 70 of it. Guest guest
I'm at the point were I fight it everyday. I started seeing a therapist in December and it has helped. Hun you are just going to have to dig deep and take control. I know it is hard!!!!! If you break it down, it will help. Tell yourself. I'm going to go and walk 4 days this week and I'm going to cut out cookies (my downfall) this week. Set a goal of a 5 lb weightloss for this next month. Then the next week continue walking and cut cookies and something else you like to snack on. Get rid of the junk in your house. Put healthy snacks in your house veggies and fruit. Do it in small steps. You can do this!!!! We are here for you!! Hugs!!! > > I had this surgey May 2003 lost 130 now 3 years later I have gained > back 70 of it. Guest guest
Steph, So very well said!! We HAVE to deal with the head stuff HAVE to!! Or this will not work. I also have a hard time with what you call the " Fat Minds " and getting though the " Fat Mentality " crud!! I still feel big, I fight this everyday. I still fight eatting just because and when I'm depressed. I think this will just be a thing I feel and struggle with for the rest of my life. What I am thankful for is the fact I did have this surgery I did lose the weight. I would have gained another 30 - 50 lbs within the last 2 ears if I hadn't had this surgery. I struggle with depression, I had a really hard time from Decenber 05 to March 06 I KNOW I would have gained another 30 to 50 lbs if I could have eaten what I wanted to eat. But this little tummy works and I am up 8 lbs BUT that is not overwhelming and I can lose the 8 lbs!! Thanks for this!! Guest guest
the part about getting the junk out of the house is sooooo true.......I had nothing here at the house for the first three weeks or so.......Then some family came to visit, when they left they left behind a box of cheezits, Ritz, and some other junk. I found myself talking myself into snaking on some of them, I have been good the last few days, but I need to just go toss all that crap in the trash outside..........I'm glad I live alone right now. I cant imagine if I was in the same boat as some of you and had to cook for a family right now. Mike in CA Re: help I'm at the point were I fight it everyday.
