Honestly, I have eaten as many as two donuts, but that's my extreme limit and I simply don't want anymore (even if I could fit it in my tummy, which I can't!) I know that many of us have never really experienced satiety before surgery, but you definitely will experience it afterward. In the early post-op period, the stomach is very small, with a capacity of about 4 ounces. Most people say that they don't WANT to fill up on foods that are nutritionally empty. I sure as heck didn't. You quickly learn that it's just not worth bothering with foods that don't pack a decent nutritional punch. This is true for quite a few months post-op. (During that time, most people don't even want the sweet things anyway, for whatever odd reasons, our tastes change.) I didn't even eat a salad until about 8 weeks post-op. Now, at 11 months post-op, my stomach capacity is still smaller than pre-op, but closer to normal so that I can enjoy a side dish or a drink with my meal and not get overfull. But the satiety level is still much lower than it was pre-op. Honest and truly, one donut is grand and two is the absolute limit for me, even now. Guest guest
> You can't eat donuts after bpd/ds? I thought you could eat > anything in reasonable proportions. One of my very favorite post-op ladies was eating mini chocolate frosted donuts at the first support group meeting I attended as a pre- op. Why??? Because she could! She may chime in here in a little while, so I won't blow her cover. Of course she does eat proteins first and does not overindulge in the sweets and carbs, but " normal " folks can eat a couple of mini-donuts (NOT A WHOLE BOX) and post-op DS-ers can eat like " normal " people. IMHO, that is the beauty of this surgery...our quality of life will be closer to " normal " than post- ops of any other WLS type. My 36th birthday and my son's 2nd birthday are coming up in the next couple of weeks and I WILL eat birthday cake at both of them. This is not the most important thing in the world to me, but it does give me a sense of normalcy that I never would have had with an RNY. Guest guest
Dee - I know you wre asking Mel about this -- but I just had to chime in. You wrote: Is it easy to eat in moderation? If I'm not too good at eating in moderation now, will it be easier post-op? This is a concern of mine. I don't think I've eaten just one donut. I gotta tell you that you will be AMAZED at how easy it is to eat in moderation. I can't tell you how wonderful that feeling is post-op -- to not have to feel deprived by not being able to eat enough. And, how easy it will be to tell when you're " full " . If I try and take another bite when I'm full . . . well -- it doesn't get swallowed, but spit into a napkin. Its amazing . . . SIMPLY amazing. I had a Haggendaaz (sp) ice cream the other day. It was covered with chocolate and almonds. The outer shell was too rich for me, so I gave it to my toddler and dog. Then, I hate 1/2 of the vanilla ice cream inside and was VERY satisfied. The other 1/2 is still in the freezer . . . it's weird, I tell ya! I'm 13 months post-op. I cannot swallow that bite if I'm full. My hubby and daughter both know when I'm full. It's a joke now (Are you gonna eat that or spit it out).
