I saw my PCP on March 13th, and had my surgical consult June 12th. My surgery is November 4th; it is later because my Dr. also does lap, so he has a longer wait time.

Time Frame

Hey y'all Kaiser patients!

I've had some Kaiser people contact me about the current time frame for getting surgery. I keep referring people to this email group ('cause it's so great!), but it seems that the time from PCP referral until surgery is getting shorter. For those of you in the process, can you give me an idea? I know it ranges widely, but some people are discouraged from even trying because they think it will take well over 2 years (I just tell them to get started...can't hurt!).

Thanks in advance.

Hugs,

Hi yes it seems it is getting shorter compared to all I have

heard. I got my approval letter in June. I just got my 3 preop

appts., surgeon-August 28th, caseworker-Sept.16th, orientation-

Oct.2nd. Not too bad considering I expected it to take at least a

year. I agree just get started, don't waste any more time. Debbie

Hi I started January 17th got my approval letter June 15th and am

still waiting to get my pre op appointments scheduled. So I have

another about 6-10 weeks till surgery. At this point in the I am a bit

more relaxed about the wait, not so freaked over the time. For me from

start to finish it's going to be about 10 months.

My doctor approved me for surgery last month. On 7/23 I started a 12 week nutrition/bariatric surgery class which is now required by Kaiser in Fontana. This class actually makes the process easier, because at week 4 your labs are automatically ordered by the doctor in charge of the class, then at week 11 your gall bladder sonogram is automatically order. The first week of class he told us that our surgery date from the first week we are there is anywhere from 5 - 8 months away, with 8 being the longest. The class helps streamline some of the process because he does the ordering of certain required tests, we do not have to call anyone and schedule any appointments. This helps somewhat because when patients had to call and make all the appointments, half of them didn't know they had to do that, and the ones that did didn't get the rights tests ordered. Because we are part of this class, our tests get top priority as they are ordered by the doctor, not scheduled by the patient. I started the class in 7/03, so the latest I should be having surgery is 3/04.

I have been to PB orientation and filled out my packet with them. When I get my authorization number, I will have to fax it to them.

Hope this helps answer your question about how long it takes, it really depends on if you are having to take this class or not, because the class really does help streamline the process a bit.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my time frame question! That helps a lot. I keep up with how things work just by reading the messages here (plus, I went through the early stages of the process with Kaiser last summer...consults with psych, nutrition, sleep study, papers sent in, denial) and I used to work for Kaiser. It's a great program that they have, but you do have to be aggressive sometimes! Anyway, thanks again for all the info!
