There is a web page on this at

http:\\users.computron.net/dinerman/dinosaurusmedicus.htm

The last update was October 24, and so far Mr. Kellow has the distinction of

being the Grand Yoda of all us on the OFS, (Old Fart Squad).

We still have not heard from Gene Gandy and some others that you know may

have a lot of experience, but that is where it stands for now.

For God's sake call Gandy. I don't want to head the list! I'm not THAT old!

I started out with a Red Cross card in about '75, which I had until we

managed to get an EMT Course in Honey Grove. I think that class must have

been somewhere around 1977 or 78.

Gene,

Apparently Terry is sticking with the criteria of when the DM was first

registered with the state, rather than when the DM first started in the

business. When I went to EMT school there was no requirement to do so.

Everyone that I worked with had ARC - Advanced first aid, and EMT training was

not made uniformly available throughout the state. The state's EMT requirement

came later.

I have to agree that the state registration criteria is the only truly

foolproof method of verification, although it is not an accurate indicator of

tenure in the bidness.

BK.

PS: I didn't even know that EMT courses were offered in 1969. Who put them on?

Bob, Gene and the rest:

I think we need to have a certain criteria for the DM slot. As I said, I

started in 1969, but I only had a Red Cross card, the EMT curriculum wasn't

known yet, (I don't think), and the term " Emergency Medical Services " was

unknown as well. I started in EMS in 69, but I never said I was an EMT,

because they hadn''t been invented yet.

Was I in Texas? No, it was in New Jersey. I was a cadet with the South

Matawan Township First Aid and Rescue Squad. I did go on calls but my

responsibilities were limited until I became a full member. I didn't get to

Texas until 1984, and was not able to even take the EMT exam until it was

offered in 1973, and that was in Louisiana.

We need a standard since I have seen a couple of different ideas as to what

qualifies a person as a DM. Lets set something and then the Grand Yoda can

be picked.

I started out as an " ambulance driver " in 1970 with the Colonial Funeral Home

in Irving. All that was required was ARC Advanced First Aid. Being a

funeral home operated ambulance service, we were required to wear dress suits

and ties!

Glad to hear from another guy from Jersey. Always remember, you can take the

boy out of Jersey, but you can never take the Jersey out of the boy.

Where I started is now known as Aberdeen, since there were two Matawans

(Township and Borough) and it was getting confusing.

Have a great trip back, I went home in September and my mother and I both

went to New York City to visit ground zero on September 11. We lost friends

there, with one or two who still are listed as missing (and probably always

will be). With all the security and about a million others from all over the

world having the same idea, we didn't get to see very much.

Ed, et al,

I was just guessing about the criteria. I too, " began " with Advanced First Aid

in 1967, which was the standard of the day. That was 35 years ago. But, I was

changed from 35 to 31 years on the DM list, which would correlate with EMT

course availability in Ft. Worth. As such, I just thought that Terry was using

TDH EMT course records (if they exist).

Because I'm still a " Spring Chicken " , there are many out there who have been in

this longer, but only possessed Advanced First Aid credentials at the time. It

shouldn't matter where one entered the field. And, bulletproof criteria might be

impossible to establish.

I attended EMT course #4, which was held at the Ft. Worth Fire and Police

Training Academy in 1971-72 and was taught by a Captain Carlson from Carswell

AFB. Gene Weatherall tested me on the " Mechanical Aids to Breathing " portion of

the state exam. I was working at Hugh M. & Sons Funeral Home in Arlington

at the time.

Ed,

I am another product of the New Jersey Volunteer EMS System. I grew up in

South Plainfield and was a cadet for the Plainfield Rescue Squad in 1982.

After a stint in the military, I ended up in Oklahoma and went thru the

older National Registry Tier System with the 6 month limits and had to

complete and work at each level for six months before you could wear the

patch or start school. I came to Texas in 1999 after a friend begged me to

come. I am very greatful to him.

I am going back home for Christmas this year to show my kids where I

started my career.

It is nice to see that I am not the only Jersey person here in Tx.

same criteria at a funeral home eca school in silsbee, the first emt course
