Guest guest Posted January 1, 2002 Report Share Posted January 1, 2002 Hello Folks.... Well here is a question for all of you who have children who have been on Tegretol. Some background...on my older son (13) who is awaiting a diagnosis of mito. is a TOUGH kid....lol. Diagnosed ADD at age 4 1/2 and has been on Ritalin, Concerta, you name it since then. Starting around age 8 he began exhibiting symptoms of mood disorder ( the politically correct way of saying bipolar I guess...also a BP diagnosis freaks out insurers) After no fewer than 5 psychiatrists examining him and threats of legal action against his father (who refused to a) accept the diagnosis and put him on appropriate medication, was recently started on Tegretol in addition to the Concerta to help smooth out his mood issues. Well, I'm not too thrilled with the Tegretol. While his mood seems somewhat better, he has become "less inhibited" but definitely not manic. In addition, was a high honor student and his grades are now in the toilet. I have seen in other's posts that some of you felt that the Tegretol "dulled" the intellect of your children. I'm wondering if that is what I am seeing here with . My other options are Lithium and Depakote. With a dual diagnosis, proper medication is a trial and error trip. When I consulted his psychiatrist about these changes in he felt that most of 's problems were the adolescent/teenager crap that all of us will unfortunately go through with our kids. is not depressed at the moment but he has been quite verbally abusive to everyone in the family. His Dr. felt that I needed to "ride herd" on him with regard to his discipline and grades and I have no problem doing that. Does anyone else have a kid (mito or not) with mood issues? Can anyone please offer this exasperated mom some advice? Compounding this is an ex-spouse (who my son is a carbon copy of) who is in complete denial. God Bless my new husband who has the patient of a saint and is very supportive. I'm wondering if 's diagnosis of mito comes through and he's put on mito cocktail, will any of this improve. Thanks!
