Hi ,

It took much longer than one month for me to get approval from SF...but eventually I did. First my PCP received an email from them saying that I had been approved. About 2 weeks after that, I received a letter telling me that I had been approved, and a few days after than an appointment card for the next Orientation being held at Richmond.

Luckily, my PCP knew how anxious I was to know if I had been approved, and left me a message that she had gotten the email.

Now that I am in Richmond's system...I am happy to say it is moving much faster!

Pre-Op

320/299 (Broke that 300 barrier today!)

Welcome to this list. You will get lots of great information and support here.

Once your referral is submitted by your PCP, wait about 2 weeks and then call Marina Berman () in SSF. She is one of the coordinators there and will know if your paperwork has been received. Call her and confirm the receipt of paperwork. Sometimes things get dropped through the cracks so you want to make sure you are not waiting for something to happen and it doesn't! If there is a problem, you will have the copies of the paperwork you can fax to her.

Once the paperwork is received, the steps are like this:

Approval

Orientation

Surgeon Appt.

Pre-op Appt.

Surgery

Plan on about 3 months between each step. The entire process takes about a year. I know, I know, it's a long time but believe me it will pass quickly and you can use the time to learn more about the process, the life after surgery and get lots of support so you are ready when your time comes. Once you are approved, you will be notified of the approval and to which facility you will be having the surgery. There are currently 3 used by Kaiser in SSF. SSF Kaiser, Pacific Bariatric in San Diego and Richmond Kaiser.

Congratulations on your decision to have a healthier life.

Hugs,

Pat B.
