Guest guest
I am involved in a group called TOPS. They are a weight loss support group that has been around for about 50 years. They have recently started accepting WLS and medications as an acceptable way to lose weight. My group is aware of my pending surgery and the leader has asked me to do a program on it for the group. I will be doing the talk on May 8th. My group is made up of all women and there are a few that I think would really benefit from the surgery. I have said from the beginning that I was not pushing this on anyone and this was my choice. Most of the ladies have been members for 20+ years and are way heavier now then when they started. I would like any ideas from you guys on what to say. I am going to explain the surgery and the process after as I know it. I will explain about the need for protein and vitamins. I am just looking for the little something that might encourage some of them to look into this option. I am going to cross post this so sorry if you get it more than once. Since there are so many WLS approved by other carriers, maybe these folks knowing this can be an option and perhaps covered by insurance would make it a more hopeful prospect. Perhaps you will hear from other folks who can give insight beyond Kaiser. Good luck with your presentation. -Chris- Pre-Op Rumsey/PB 350/

Guest guest
Dear I have been especially impressed with the way Al Roker has presented his WLS. I think if you go to the website (Is he on NBC??) you might be able to locate some articles by him. I am sure some of the things he says are the same kinds of things you would like to convey. He, also, is careful to say that he doesn't want to promote the surgery, just to share his experiences. Good luck. Public speaking is scary and so very fulfilling and rewarding. I'm sure you will do well. Cheryl Speaking about WLS > I am involved in a group called TOPS. They are a weight loss > support group that has been around for about 50 years. Guest guest
And be sure to tell them about California's Department of Managed Healthcare if they're denied, and to not give up and assume it isn't covered if their insurance company says no at first. I would also emphasize that this is gastric surgery, not brain surgery, and they will still have to deal with MAJOR changes in eating and lifestyle. This is a tool, not a miracle (although a miracle tool, too, he he) Laurie W. Guest guest
Oh, and don't forget the tell them how to calculate their BMI and the NHI (National Health Institute's) recommendations for WLS. 100 pounds overweight and a BMI of at least 35 (although some insurances require more). Guest guest
Dear , I think it is great you are able to educate people on weight loss surgery. So many people are ignorant. There are so many people who could benefit from it. However, I had a uneasy feeling when you said you would like to " encourage " some of the members to have surgery. I worry that someone may have the surgery on your recommendation and have serious complications. You may feel guilty or they could blame you. I remember what Al Roker said when asked to do interviews. He did not want to be the reason anyone had the surgery. I'm sure you have already thought of this. You're on the right path in telling them it is a choice you have made and it is a proceedure that has major benefits and risks. Good Luck on your presentation! pre-op Speaking about WLS > I am involved in a group called TOPS. They are a weight loss > support group that has been around for about 50 years. Guest guest
Good points, . I would also point out that IF this is a choice they make, it is a tough row to hoe. And though the weight loss is dramatic and quick after surgery, it is in no way a breeze getting there. -----Original Message-----From: Donlon Sent: Friday, April 25, 2003 6:45 AMTo: gastric-bypass-support-kaiser-patients Subject: Re: Speaking about WLSDear , I think it is great you are able to educate people on weight losssurgery.
