Guest guest
Hi Joy - I consider myself extremely lucky to be accepted as a patient of Dr. Raghu. I don't think he has time to see many patients. He has always been very cordial to me. I still see a Pulmonologist in Tacoma. He is Dr. Ledoux and is a great Doctor. I am going to see UofW liver specialists this Thursday to get back on Imuron. Did you get to go to the seminar 'Living with IPF " at the UofW last fall? Dr. Raghu moderated and I learned a lot, not all good. Yes I also have sleep apnea, but have terrible time with my cpap so get lectured about using it daily to keep my O2 up at night. I have trouble enough sleeping without fighting with it all night. Are you using the cpap yet and how do you like it? Also are you using O2 yet? I have a million questions but fatigue and ammonia build up on my brain cause confusion and forgetfullness. I will be talking to you more in the future. Guest guest
Steve from WA It's so extremely important that you maintain your oxygen levels at night. When I was tested I was dropping below 90% over 25% of the time and I'm sure it would be worse now. If you can't manage a CPAP then at least you should be on straight oxygen. However, I've found most CPAP problems to be a matter of the wrong masks. There are so many choices and yet our suppliers don't tell us. I've found most people to do for the blue gell masks like Sher and others have. They mold and don't hurt the face, fit securely, and wrap around in such a way as to not be so subject to coming off during the night. Sleep is important, but oxygen is critical. So, what I'm saying is a CPAP is preferable for you, but if for some reason you can't handle it, you need oxygen at night. > > Hi Joy - I consider myself extremely lucky to be accepted as a patient of > Dr. Raghu. Guest guest
Steve....I'm sure you have read my post about this wonderful pillow for CPAP users! Here is the site again for the one I bought and Joe posted another site for different one.... www.cpapsupplyusa.com/I-Cpap-Supply-Usa-I-Sleepap-Pillow-Ss6339.aspx I fought my tubing and air leaks too and thought it just went w/ the territory so to speak. Bruce sent this site and now I've personally slept on it and I can't praise it highly enough! Maybe some sort of sleep pillow will help you too. We tend not to use the CPAP if it drives us bonkers. I didn't use mine the first time around .... a few years back....for just that reason. Also didn't have the right face mask....do you? Good luck. Use the CPAP...you will sleep better. Guest guest
I got your info about the pillow and am checking with Vickie on whether we have money for it. Looks promising. I'm not used to being on a fixed income yet, plus we have a boat load of bills just come in from UW for my recent surgeries. I also use a full face mask Respironics because I can't keep my mouth closed. So far I haven't seen the gel mask in a full face. Actually I have used my mask more after comments on this board. Also I don't really have hobbies. I have a lawn service now and any wood working is to hard now. My wife is promising me a large jigsaw puzzle but haven't seen it yet. I read a lot. Daily newspaper and fiction. I do Soduko and crosswards. It' supposed to keep the mind sharper but also reminds me how bad I've gone downhill. I am really very positive with people I know but for some reason feel able to be truthful on this forum. 80 plus messages daily is my new hobby. Guest guest
Hi Steve... I see Dr. Raghu Apr 23. A week before that appt I have another echo on my heart to see if there is any change in my PAH. I get all my O2 and CPAP supplies from SOS - Sound Oxygen System, they are very great to work with. I have not paid them a dime, ever. My Washington State Basic Health and Medicare seem to cover everything. I have the snorkle type CPAP and like it so much better than the face masks. It's pretty hard to sleep with your mouth open 'cause when you open your mouth air comes rushing out, and your ears plug! I am now used to it and last night had a long sleep. Also, between Harbor View and U of W I have not paid for anything...I was put on the "charity list". It's easy to do and perhaps you should call and request the forms to fill out. I've had thousands of dollars worth of work and hospital stays - and thankfully, these have all been covered! I'm on a fixed income as well. Take care of yourself!!! Guest guest
Steve, I think that debilitating illness is so much more difficult for men. Most of your lives are spent doing physical things....like your yard work and wood work. We girls can turn to less tiring activities more easily. Your objective now is to not let this change in lifestyle change you into a morose emotional wreck. Big job...just keeping your head on straight. You have done well to turn to the things that you can do for enjoyment. , on this board, has placed stools around his house so that he can go from place to place and do things to help his wife. He can help with chores like laundry and dishes, etc....even dusting with a mask. Those things help your wife and they will help you feel productive and useful. When I am so sick that I can not contribute anything, I get so depressed. If I can even get one chore done in a day that is usually the first thing I have to report when my husband gets home from work. He especially is happy when I can sit on my stools and make something good for him to eat. I have Windex wipes so that I do not have to spray the stuff, dusting wipes that are damp and do not put dust out into the air and have found an entire line of products at Target that are environmentally friendly....usually meaning that they do not take your breath away when you use them. So many days now, the last thing I want to do is to clean something. But even to wipe out a sink with my Windex wipes gives me a sense of accomplishments. I try not to compare the old me with the new sick me, but there is a stark contrast. Just some advice that was not solicited but freely given anyway. My specialty. Guest guest
Joyce....sexist remarks....lol Yard work? Wood work? Me? NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not this man. The stools is an excellent idea. I thought of that one this week when looking at lifts and powerchairs and such. Even the chairs with seats that raise have limits. So, it crossed my mind that one thing I really want to do is continue to cook. Even now, a nice stool in the kitchen would be good. In the future, I know it would be the only way. So, another thing on my list of things to look for is a very comfortable stool for the kitchen that will get me to the right height. > > > > I got your info about the pillow and am checking with Vickie on > whether we > > have money for it. Guest guest
Hi Bruce I've got cheap wood stools all over the house. I am more able to get up and keep working from a stool rather than a chair. Have a stool in bathroom for shaving, one in kitchen by sink another by counter out of the wife's way, one by the washer, three in the basement shop and one in the garage for yard work P Bruce Moreland wrote: Joyce....sexist remarks....lol Yard work? Guest guest
Hi back at you. I can't wait to meet you. This forum is the first contact with people in the same boat I find myself in. I got my first SSDI payment last Aug. I will not qualify for medicare until aug 2009. I have been on Cobra with United Health since Spring of 2007. I am being terminated formally from Home Depot on Apr 10. My Cobra payments will jump to $450mo. I would have qualified to the 11 month extension if I had read the fine print that required me to notify Home Depot of my acceptance by SSDI within 60 days. My wife makes too much for us to qualify for most Programs. Currently my insurance has a $1000 deductible for RX already made and $3000 medical. After meeting this the plan pays 80% and I pay 20%. My wife totaled our share of UW surgery this morning and it comes to $6000. My wife's insurance would cover me for $1000 Mo., so thats not an option. I will check with UW on their program and the State of WA to see if I can qualify for anything. Other wise back to the 401K's which are already hurting. Also I am doing the 6 minute oximeter walk at 91 so no oxygen yet. But will keep Sos in mind. I finally took my mask off about 4AM and fell right to sleep. I did wear it for about an hour. Two nights ago I slept for about 5 hours with mask so will keep trying. Guest guest
Thank you. All good ideas. I forget I was a bachelor till age 35 and liked to cook. I can get back to that with the stools. You can give me advice anytime. I have noticed since dx I have slowly started experiencing my feminine side. Cry at movies, some of the stories I see here, etc. Maybe it's medication. Just kidding. Guest guest
Hello Peggy, You must have ESP. With the osteoporosis I'm down to 5'3 " . I like the idea of flying across the kitchen. OH Oh maybe the medications again. Seriously I don't take that many chances after falling between the toilet and vanity and not being able to get up by myself. My wife Vickie finally came up to check after an hour plus. Taught me a lesson. Guest guest
Joyce, I have cried, super angry, want to kill someone, want to fight, want to run away, and so many other emotions that I feel are due to PREDNISONE and it is hard to explain how it affects me. O feel in even makes me feel suicidal at time and say why prolong the inevitable and Go through the pain, suffering and agony you put others through not to mention the cost in dollars.
