My youngest son was not only learning disabled (he is now 21 and has the

reading level of a 6th grader) but he also is ADHD, suffers from depression,

has anxiety and panic attacks and a temper to rival Satan's. It was very

difficult raising that child. He refused to take medications in his teen

years, so that made it even worse. He is now on his own and sees the state

mental health people and willingly takes his meds, but he still has

problems.

You have all my heart felt empathy. My prayers are with you and your

family.

Oh, one more thing, my youngest son was the one conceived after the doctor

told me I would never ever be able to get pregnant again! He was a

hyperplasia baby! I don't know if that's a connection or not, but it is

something to think about.

Libby;

I have a question for you,as an adult have things gotten easier for you? I

mean has it become easier for you to learn and comprehend things? My son is

in special ed and his teachers and counselor are very suportive, for the

most part. Those that are not are not his teachers for long.

I feel it is hard enough for him without the added stress of a teacher who

wants to pick on him, allow others to make fun of him(he is also very

uncoordinated)or make an example of him.I won't allow that to happen and so

far the school has been very supportive the few times I have had to step in.

I never expect him to get perfect grades, however I have had to get after him

for neglecting his least favorite subjects. An E,I or F is unacceptable to

me and I find out the problem right away. It is usually that he did not turn

in his assignments. We then devise a plan with his teacher to give all

missed assignments over again and I help him when he needs it.

Most of the time his homework is completed at school and it is hard for me

to monitor it until I see the grade. His teachers usually work with me to

bring his grades up.

Thank you for your interestand no I don't think he has fibro but I have

heard it could be hereditary and he may develop it later.

To more pain free days and a cure.

Hope

A note to all.

it....bet you guys didn't know you had a fanatical special ed mom here, did

ed mom, bane of the existence of school folks who are not doing what they

should etc.....and glad to help anyone who fits and needs help in any of

these categories.....and with kitties probs too!!! Dee

Hope, Libby, and others interested,

Hey! I am special education teacher and I am very intrigued by your insights

into

learning disabilities and your personal experience with them. Please keep me

posted or feel

free to include me into any of your questions. I am by no means an expert, but

children and

adults with disabilities intrigue me and I want to learn and be a part of all

that I can.

>As the mother of 4, all in special ed for most of their lives (my 18 year

old daughter will attempt to finish her last year of school in regular

classes) I cannot possibly overstate the need for attitudes such as yours.

I have had to fight ignorance of autistic traits all my sons' lives and I

am worn out....with 5 years to go with one son and 7 to go with

another....I am looking frantically for a good school for high functioning

autistic kids so I can stop the incredible persecution they, and I, deal

with because when they don't understand something they can't say those

words they say things like " I'm not a rocket scientist " and the teacher

doesn't understand what they mean and just goes on with the

lesson.....educate yourself and listen to parents....parents KNOW.....and

that is the missing piece in so many equations....the school personnel

think " we have degrees! " so they know more than the parents....WRONG....and

with fibro and chronic fatigue to slow me physically and, even worse,

mentally, I'm at a disadvantage at meetings where they know what the

problem is and I'm walking in cold....takes me a day or so to come up with

the correct response and by then the meeting is long over!!! Bless you for

caring, that's a big start....Dee
