Guest guest
C. There are a couple of alternatives that you can take. One, take your patient information from Dr.Rutledge to your family physician and have her read it. If she has any questions, have her get in touch with Dr. Rutledge. He will be more than happy to talk with her. Or you can try to find another physician that is more sympathetic to the needs of obese people. I had to find a new dr. At the first visit, I told him what I was intending on doing. I had him look at Dr.Rutledges information. He made me go through a couple of things before the surgery, but I did what he wanted me to do. Now he may be offering the surgery to his other obese patients because he sees how it has really helped me. Hope this helps, Good luck, Tina
Guest guest
Thanks for the advice. What kind of things did you have to do first? Guest guest
I think the problem is getting your PCP educated. I have a good relationship with mine, but he balked at the surgery. However, he said if I would try Xenical for a period of time, he would try to support me. In the meantime, he attended a conference that Dr Fobi was at and he spoke at length with someone from their program. I also gave Dr Rutledge's Patient Booklet. So many MD's think - eat less, move more, etc etc etc. I still am not approved, but he did get me referred to a surgeon locally. When I went to get my flu shot Monday, he saw me in the waiting room and asked how the surgery stood. He has a " Before and After " calendar from Fobi and says he thinks of me every time he looks at it. If my case goes well, his other patients will definitely benefit from his new education. Guest guest
Dear , I know how you feel as the same thing happened to me. So I have a new doctor now and I think maybe I am making some progress with this one. Don't be discouraged. I know it is hard. I had my doctor for 12 years and he was a good one. But he was also very closed minded and that is not a good quality in a doctor, so it is good to find it out before we get into a worse situation that would require a little flexibility. in Missouri
Guest guest
, Dr.Klipstein is over at UNC. He wanted me to go to nutrition couseling and to the Obesity Center. I did that all the while getting ready for the surgery. After talking to the Obesity Center and the dietician, they were in full agreement that surgery was my best solution. The dietician even commented on how knowledgeable I was about nutrition and that she could tell I knew my own body better than anyone. I knew what didn't work, so surgery was my last hope of being healthy. Dr.Klipstein is very impressed with my progress and how the weight loss has truly helped my chronic back problems. I've gone from taking 8 Ultram for pain to 1 per day. I don't have the pain that I used to. Dr.Klipstein is very young, so I had to really educate him on the merits of obesity surgery. Plus, Dr.Rutledge spent 20 years at UNC and is very highly regarded in the medical world, as well he should be! Try one or two dr.s that you may like. Make an appointment just to talk to the dr. Dr.Klipstein spent over an hour with me on the first visit just getting to know me. When you go to talk to them, explain what you are trying to do, go prepared about the surgery, have Dr.Rutledge's patient manual or a copy of it to give to the dr. Find out how they feel about the surgery since you will be seeing them for follow up care. Encourage them to talk to Dr. Rutledge. But most importantly, be firm but pleasant in what you want to do. It's your body and your health! You have every right to do what YOU think is best for you! Dr.s are coming around slowly to the surgery. If the dr does suggest something like medication or diet and exercise, go with it for a couple of months. That will show the dr that you are willing to try anything. They should then be more open to your suggestions if they know you are willing to cooperate with them. Hope this helps, please write again. I too am wanting to have the Msg operation. My husband had to go see the doctor today & I went with him. I talked to our doctor about having this procedure done. I had ran off some information for him about this procedure. He briefly looked over it. At first he wanted me to have it done closer to home. But I explained to him that I thought NC was the closest place to have it done at. He wanted me to research it a little more & said that he will o.k. it , as long as the insurance gives the o.k. I weigh 340 & I am 5'9 .He said that I was not even on the chart for the body mass index & I was probably over 45. As far as your doctor is concerned, I would get some information to her about the procedure & if she still does not give you a referal, then I would look for another doctor. You have to decide in your heart what you really want. I think your insurance would o.k. it , because doctors have a way of getting around these things. I need to go for now. I will be praying for you. If you want to write me my e-mail address is unonurse@...
Guest guest
: You may need to meet with your pcp personally. I would advise you to go to Dr. R's web site and educate yourself very carefully. His site is so full of information, you should print much of it and take it with you when you again meet with your pcp and educate her. My pcp was not for the surgery and would not talk about it until I got all of the information and went to her very well informed and helped her to understand the statistics of Dr. R's surgery and the differences between his and others and the health risks from the obesity vs. the surgery. In the end, my pcp has been very supportive and has written a letter to my insurance company telling them that she supports the surgery and will continue to follow up with me. If your pcp absolutely won't work with you, please don't give up. There are a lot of great physicians out there who will work with you and support you.
