I am curious, is niacin, a potential trigger for many rosacea sufferers,

the same niacinamide, which is in all multivitamins?

So sorry Cathie -- I must have read that nitrates are a trigger for some

people. And I was just wondering if nitrates are related to niacinamide.

I'll be more careful with my posts. Misinformation regarding this problem

is the last thing any of us need. Best regards,

Kerry -- Put me on your list for poor nutrition in the past. My diet for

the last fifteen years, even to my somewhat biased eyes, has been

absolutely terrible. This may sound like an excuse, but I felt that I do

not have time to eatr very well. At first it was graduate school and now

it is a busy career that takes me late into the evening and weekends.

Morover, when you are single, like me, there is no incentive to cook.

Well, I suppose that will have to change. But that is why I asked if

niacinamide poses a problem for rosacea, because I want to start taking a

multivitamin and niacinamide is in all multivitamins.

Kerry-

Well, I guess I will fess up too then. I had anorexia as a teenager (not

bulimia) when the perioral dermatitis and rosacea started.

Come to think of it, isn't Bill Clinton known for not following such a

great diet? Remember all that stuff about him eating at Mcs so

much?

I copied this out for someone else. If anyone is interested these are the

supplement recommendations from the book Kerry mentions above. I also follow

many of the recommendations.

Very Important

1. Evening Primrose Oil 500mg 3x daily. (I don't take this because it I get

a weird side effect not related to my face...but never heard of anyone else who

reacts to it).

2. Vitamin A 25,000 IU daily for 3 months then reduce to 15,000IU. If

pregnant do not exceed 10,000IU. (I take the beta-carotene form, now only once

per day; I feel beta-carotene is safer).

3. Vitamin B complex as directed on lable. (I take exactly that).

4. extra Vitamin B12 100mcg 3 times daily (again, I now take this only

1x/day).

Important

1. Kelp 1000-1500mg daily (I take 1000)

2. Multivitamin and mineral complex as directed on lable (yes for me).

3. Vitamin E start with 400IU daily and increase slowly to 800IU (yes for me)

4. Zinc 50 mg daily - do not exceed 100 mg daily from all supplement sources

(check your multi - I take about 40 mg)

Helpful

1. Ageless beauty from Biotec Foods as directed on lable (I can't find this in

Canada).

2. Aloe vera topical application as directed. (I don't use but others on site

have said they do - the book warns that some sufferers may react to this).

3. Chlorophyll or alfalfa as directed on lable. (alfalfa for me).

4. flaxseed oil capsules 1000mg daily or liquid 1 tsp daily (I take capsules).

5. GH3 cream from Gero Vita - topical as directed (can't find here).

6. Herpanacine from Diamond-Herpanacine Associates as directed on lable (can't

find here).

7. L-Cysteine 500mg daily, on an empty stomach. Take with water or juice. Do

not take with milk. Take with 50mg B6 and 100mg Vitamin C for better

absorption. Contains sulfur, needed for healthy skin. (I haven't tried this

yet).

8. Lecithin 1200mg 3x daily before meals (I only do this in the morning)

9. Proteolytic enzymes as directed on lable. take between meals (don't use)

10. Selenium 200mcg daily (yes for me).

11. Vitamin C with bioflavonoids 3000-5000 mg daily in divided doses. (I am

now only taking 1000mg).

Kerry: I also take vitamins. Interestingly, when I added zinc to my routine (I

added the supplements one at a time just in case one proved to be a trigger), my

fingernails no longer broke and peeled. My skin did improve over time, but

because I had just started my rosacea medication it is impossible for me to say

that the vitamins were of benefit. I know that I will not discontinue taking

them however. I really do think that overall, they have helped and lead to

general improved health.

My rosacea showed up at a time when I was under severe pressure at work. I was

not eating in a healthy manner so could well have had deficits. I don't think

you're silly at all; instead, I agree and really believe that that is one of the

potential contributing factors.

Wow! Hi All!

I notice a lot of us had eating disorders while young. I did not have an

eating disorder, but I was incredibly skinny. (93 lbs. and 5'6 " at 20). I am

now almost 40, and a normal weight after my first. (Around 115 -- 120,

although now I am about 128 -- 130). I wonder if this is a factor? At this

point, who the he** knows.

I guess I am just thinking out loud.

I also was anorexic during my teens. I didn't have rosacea symptoms until I

was 29. (I am 42 now.) Up until that time I got compliments on my " peaches

and cream " complexion. I guess this is my payback for not having teenage

skin problems!

Kerry,

I'm back on the discs as a treatment; using in conjunction with Sy's

program--and I think I'm doing pretty well.

I've also stepped up my mineral supplementation program, along with extra

zinc-vitaminA(the beta carotene)-vitaminD My skin is looking better than

it has for MANY months, as I began to flare very badly last summer in July

and NOTHING seemed to help. I'm also still taking the Candistroy and I do

believe it's making a difference--helping with allergies a little. Per

Esther's excellent information/suggestions, I began, just last night, to

put a bit of Mycelex-7 rubbed onto my hands then applied to my face just

before going to bed...I had been experimenting with the Mycelex, all week

on my arms & since my arms seemed to " love " this stuff, thought I could

begin to cautiously apply to my face--hey, it's Sunday, and I wasn't

planning to be out anywhere; face looked GOOD this AM, so I'm thinking

maybe my face likes this stuff, too.

Still have appt to see a " 2nd opinion " dermatologist next month, to

hopefully gain more information

Good luck. My face loves this stuff and it does clear seb/derm faster and

gentler than anything else I ever tried. Hope it works for you too.

Remember, with seb/derm, you are going to cure it and don't need to use the

Mycelex endlessly. Once it's cleared, keep using it a few days and then stop.

Cycle back on only when you need it.

I agree with Esther. I took over 100 mgs of zinc as a teenager for my

acne. A doctor told me that that high a dosage interferes with iron

absorption. I have anemia now and wonder if the zinc megadoses caused

it. Matija

I agree with Esther. I took over 100 mgs of zinc as a teenager for my

acne. A doctor told me that that high a dosage interferes with iron

absorption. I have anemia now and wonder if the zinc megadoses caused

it. Matija

No problem . There are so many things we have to watch out for, who

would keep track. I am glad that niacin is okay, because our bodies definitely

need it. Nitrates are not related to niacin or niacinamide as far as I

remember from my chemistry classes in university. They are a product found in

smoked meats (and hot dogs) and BBQ's meats. Others may be able to provide

more info.

Thanks very much to all for your responses to my original posting. In

keeping with my nutritional deficiency theory, I am pleasantly surprised to

hear that there are in the group (by my count) 5 or 6 people who've fought

anorexia. Not that I'm pleased any of you have suffered with anorexia!!!

It's a very difficult condition to deal with. For one thing, if you are an

alcoholic or drug addict, you can never touch the stuff again, but food

addicts still have to eat every day for the rest of their lives! ( A few

years ago I was on CBC radio talking about this-under the code name " "

so as not to embarrass my parents-something I no longer worry about!) I

have been " well " in terms of eating disorders for about 8 years, but I am

still prone to binges (especially sugar binges) which are a disaster for

rosacea. Bulimia was the biggest disaster of all for me-almost killed me,

and most certainly was the start of my rosacea. Of course there are lots of

other causes of nutritional deficiency (things like celiac disease-any

celiacs out there? My husband and three kids have this, and it's possible

that I do too. It is also VERY common in the English/Irish population, and

is seriously underdiagnosed.) Does anyone else think that they might suffer

from nutritional deficiency from some cause other than eating disorders

which may contribute to their rosacea?

Thanks again for all of your responses.

Kerry-

I would have to say that my diet is probably not the most nutritious.

However, I have resolved to try hard to eat better and see if it helps.

I have been doing better good this week. I am trying to eat more

vegetables. I have gotten my rosacea to go into a kind of a remission

about 2 other times before by eating a healthy diet and avoiding food

triggers. However, when I get busy at work, etc. I tend to slack off on

cooking as much and eat out more.

I have endometriosis and have fought severe anemia (forever.) I finally had

endometrial ablation last year to try to make my cycles more manageable. I

read somewhere that women who have red hair (Like me) are more prone to

rosacea and endometriosis too. It said this was tied to the immune system

somehow. I think I read this in Women's World magazine. I thought it was

really interesting.

Gail, Endometriosis is a condition of the fallopian tubes. During

mentstruation the fallopian tubes get blocked by an excess of matter

(I don't know if it's the cells of the reproductive area, the

unfertilized egg or clumps of blood) which causes heavier bleeding and

more pain during a period. I was checked for this and thank god don't

have it. (My periods were awful!!) I'm glad you're getting it checked

out. My anemia is linked to my underactive thyroid. I don't know

what the connection is though. Maybe somebody knows perhaps? When I

go through my anemia when I forget to take my iron pills or don't eat

much red meat, my rosacea improves! Of course, I look as white as a

ghost. If you have heavy bleeding during your period that could be

causing the anemia. My periods were heavy and painful. I found by

taking lots of calcium (drinking milk, soyfoods and yogurt if these

aren't your triggers) seems to reduce the flow and cramping alot.

Taking ibuprofin for the pain is supposed to make your bleeding

heavier too. It was a vicious cycle! Good luck and let us know how

things work out. Matija :-)
