My friend's husband struggled with hiccups during his cancer treatment.  Turned

out it was the chemo drugs.  It wasn't p'nil, but I could find out which one it

was if that could be at all helpful, Kate F

Subject: [ ] Hiccups - Plaquenil

I have a question for the group, my dad like me has RA, he has recently started

plaquenil, i think about a month ago, so now hes had the hiccups since monday

and he is in a terrible state, he has them even while sleeping and they are

causing him a lot of pain and discomfort

He went to the doc on Tuesday who took some blood but advised the only tablets

that would help were also used to treat schizophrenia, and as my dad had a heart

attack last year they were reluctant to give him them. He had to go back to the

docs today and they agreed to give him the pills now, they have some bloods back

and said there were a few changes but nothing major.

Now my dad has this happen years ago and he had the hiccups for 10 days that

time, my mum seems to think it may be the plaquenil as she said he got put on it

years ago and she cant remember why it was stopped but she has her suspicions it

was because of the hiccups

Does anybody know of, or has anybody experienced such side effects from

plaquenil? Also does anybody know any cures for the hiccups? he has tried

bicarbonate of soda, vinegar, lemon and ginger tea, drinking from the other side

of the glass all to know avail

Thanks

Sharon xx

When I was a media specialist in a middle school, sometimes a kid

would come up and ask to go get water because of the hiccups. I would

say, " First let me take your pulse. " I would put my thumb on their

wrist, but I didn't really count anything. Then they'd say, " Now can I

go get some water? " And I would say, " Where is your hiccups? "

Sometimes this will work when I do it to myself, but I doubt that it

would work on a case like your Dad's. It must be maddening! I hope

he's soon back to normal.

Sharon,

I have no cure for hiccups, and I've never heard Plaquenil causing them. If he

had problems before with the med, the doctor should take him off it for awhile.

I would not let him take something that can cause harm, not sure what the doctor

is thinking. Do you trust this doctor? Is he a rheumy? Have you did any

research online? I hope you find some answers, and he stops the hiccups. I

know its very painful for him. Keep us posted, and I'm so glad your dad has you

to look out for him.

Hugs,

Tawny

Thanks for all your replies, it looks like it may not be the plaquenil then, he

still has the hiccups and is now trying ridiculous things to get rid of them i.e

sitting with his chin in a glass of water! We can only hope this new med kicks

in soon and gives him some relief, but ill keep you all up to date

There are a couple of things I have tried for hiccups that have worked for me.

Putting a small amount of sugar on the tip of my tongue and then putting the

tongue on the roof of the mouth.  I've heard you can use bitters in place of

sugar but haven't tried it.  Also, putting a spoonful of peanut butter in your

mouth and eating it slowly, without bringing it out of your mouth.

If he's had them for so long it must be some sort of spasm though, I would

think.  I hate the hiccups.  So sorry for what you all are going through!

Has he tried eating some sugar? My Brother told me to eat a spoonful or two of

sugar. I didn't beleive him at first, but it has worked for me everytime I have

tried it. Sometimes I just eat a couple of sugar cubes. I hope he gets rid of

his hiccups soon.

I once did taxes for a gentleman who was 100% disabled from the Post Office due

to chronic Hiccups. He had been retired for 5 years when I did his taxes and it

has been years ago, when you had to disclose the disability to get a deduction

on your taxes. He told me he had tried everything as had his doctor and nothing

worked.
