If we truly are public safety professionals, then EMS should be funded fully

and completely as a public safety entity. Carrying that theme to its logical

conclusion, there would be no private EMS agencies. Or else private EMS

agencies would occupy the same position and status as private security

agencies do.

Bottom line: We need to develop an identity and stick with it. Right now

everybody loves us but nobody wants to feed us.

Remember, if you're an employee of the state/local government, you're

considered a public servant. Assault on a public servant is a higher

classification of assault.

Not all medical professionals are as you put it " fed " well. Many

allied health professionals with advanced university degrees make

less than ideal wages. I know of many people with master degrees in

many health disciplines that make the same wages or less than a

paramedic.

The other two branches of public safety (the fire service and law

enforcement) have had over two hundred years of history and started

out as less than desirable career choices.

Having a debate over what to call ourselves will not change our

perceived status in the medical community. Getting organized and

working with the communities leadership - political and medical is

the way to change our status. In communities with strong public

safety based EMS service we are indeed " fed " well both financially

and professionally.

I am confused as to why someone would be offended to be called a part

of the public safety team.

I've read every post on this subject and have seen none of the participants

in this little debate claim to be offended by anything. We merely debate the

perceptions we have of ourselves and of our trade. It is good for us to be

able to use this forum for an exchange of thoughts as we can all learn

something more about our colleagues.

Just a thought...

A Tarrant Country prosecuter told me that the assault

of a provider for a private EMS company fell under the

same laws as assault of a security guard. If the

provider had worked for a city/county, the charges

would have been different.
