Hi Gerry I had periodic vertigo with my cholesteatoma ear...my first three ENTs told me that there was NO WAY that I should be having vertigo from my eustachian tube problem, and they weren't able to see the cholesteatoma. The guy who did my surgery said that the cholseatoma was situated where it was the likely culprit causing the veritgo. I do have a tube in the same ear just to make sure I don't suffer the same pressure problems that seemed to bring on the vertigo before. Good luck. Hi All

Yes during my first bout with c-toma I suffered from vertigo spells but this time it is almost constant. Any and every movement can set it off - My surgery is in 3 weeks and I hope that puts an end to it because I am having a difficult time getting around. My colleagues think I have started drinking....lol

Hi,I was wondering about experiences with vertigo for people who have had cholesteatomas. I've just been diagnosed with vertigo and have been undergoing the Epley maneuver to try to get rid of crystals in the tubes of my left ear. Surprisingly, it's not in my cholesteatoma ear, the right ear. I was just wondering if this has been encountered by other people with cholesteatomas. Gerry

I was wondering about experiences with vertigo for people who have had

cholesteatomas. I've just been diagnosed with vertigo and have been

Hi Gerry

The crystals are sometimes called otoliths.. Their basic function is to

connect with sensitive hair cells which then signals your brain where your

head is in relation to gravity. So with BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional

Vertigo) the crystals have dislodged and are not connecting properly

whenever you put head in a particular postion. It should mean that vertigo

is episodic - whenever you lie lie down or tilt back or something. The

purpose of the manoeuvres is put the cystals back in alignment.

As far as I know BPPV has no specific connection with ctoma but can happen

to anyone for all sorts of reasons. Vertigo more typical of ctoma is often

due to erosion through the back wall of the ear which causes cold and air

movement to affect the functioning of the semicircular canals. It's a

differnet kind of vetigo.

Hi

I've just visited my consultant and told her about my dizzy spells.

She was very surprised that this is the first time I've had problems

(1st c'toma was 13 years ago and 2nd was 2 years ago).

At the time it was happening I was under a lot of stress and suffering

a bit with depression and she said that all this was overloading my

brain and so causing the dizzy spells.

I've quit work which was the stress, got the funding for my BAHA

hearing aid which was the depression and everything was fine for a

week, then suffered some stress yesterday and the world started

spinning again, literally in a matter of hours.

My dr has prescribed me something which should help with the spells

but I'm hoping that life will get back on a more even keel again.

If your suffering perhaps it's worth looking at what's going on around

you.

Phil,

Thanks for that interesting article link. I went back to the doctor

today for what I thought was going to be another Epley. He had done

two of the regular Epley's and then a " horizontal " Epley. He

decided not to do the Epley, but instead had me put these glasses on

which tape the eyes while in motion, and he watched on a monitor.

He said he had never seen the eyes move around like they were moving

for me and he didn't think it was ear related. So, I don't know

what it is.

Hi Gerry

That's interesting .Vertigo and nystgmus (an uncontrolloable movement of the

eyes) go together. It's because the signals from you balance system actually

control eye movements. If one of the balnce systems isn't working then your

eyes willdrift to the bad side. As that happens your brain will try to pull

them back in the opposite direction - and that's what causes the feeling of

vertigo - the room spinning round. However I have heard from some people

with visual problems that when they can't focus properly, their eyes to to

scan for more information ie. they move around, and that also causes

dizziness. In those situations, the problem has nothing to do with their

ears.

If you are having episodes of vertigo and you have the presence of mind, you

can usually diminish it if you concentrate your gaze on a particular object

or a spot on the wall perhaps. It's not always easy to do but the way to

overcome balance problems is to use your eyes more deliberatelyy focussed

than you might normally do

I hope you find out what's causing the problem.

My daughter is 6 weeks post surgery after a CWD. She has had three

serious episodes of dizzyness in the last three days. All have been

when she is in a crowd or a noisy place. She has an appointment this

week and we will ask the doctor about it. Has anyone else experienced

this? Does it go away? Is it the visual or the noise that causes it

and what should we do to help her? I would appreciate any insight.

Hi

I'm not sure about the noise part, it could strong vibrations in the ear I

suppose. The visual part is one I still get occasionally. It only happens

very specific situations where there is too much visual overload and

presumably insufficient balance data being sent from the ears. One is where

I'm in a place where there a lot people moving around, especially if they're

going in different directions as in a busy train station. The other is when

I'm in an open high space like top the fire escape where thee is too much

space up, down and sideways to contend with. One thing that helps is to keep

my eyes focussed on some object directly in front of me and let them wander

around too much.

It's early days for your daughter so things may settle down. Even if it is

longer lasting I think it is better not to resort to medications or to avoid

situations. The brain is very good at sorting things out for itself

For and Phil,

Phil has rightly said that brain is good at sorting the problem and solving without any one knowing.

It is not uncommon for a person to be giddy for few weeks after ear surgery.

This is the noise which induce excessive movements in the inner ear fluid to cause giddiness.(Tullio Phenomenon)

Many times there are breaches in the body shell over membranous inner , which are covered by C-Toma itself, but get exposed when C-Toma sac is removed.

Just wait for few more weeks for things to settle down. She can keep cotton or silastic swimming plugs and put in ear when exposed to loud sound. I will be interested to know what does ENT Surgeon suggests on next visit.

It might be surprise for few to know that the brain compensatory mechanism get sluggish by giving more medication to suppress the ear balance mechanism.

Good luck to ur daughter LISA, just reassure her that she is going to be fit as before.

You are so right about the ears. Forgot about them.. I was constantly going

to doctor for my ears,

and they could find nothing wrong, but now I know why. Every once in

awhile I will get sensation in them, and in left side of face. The neck is

responsible for so many things. So glad your Vertigo is becoming better. I

have had a few bouts of it the past few weeks, but thank goodness I found a

herb I could take that within 5 minutes, sometimes 10 restores balance.

+++Hi Shaila. Yes, it is another sign your body is detoxifying, so it is also

die-off symptoms. Die-off, detoxifying and healing symptoms are all the same,

which fall under the heading of Herxheimer Reactions - see this article:

http://www.healingnaturallybybee.com/articles/heal2.php

But since you've had this before your body will " retrace " it during the healing

process: http://www.healingnaturallybybee.com/articles/heal10.php

Remember you will be detoxifying drugs and anesthetics - when you detoxify

anesthetics it will cause all of those symptoms - remember you were " out cold "

when under anesthetics for an operation.

This too shall pass as you progress on this program.

All the best, Bee

I have been experiencing serious vertigo on and off for a few months. My

rheumatologist prescribed meclizine for me, but within the last 2 weeks the

vertigo is noticeably worse, and the meclizine isn't helping. I almost can't

drive because the world looks like it is spinning. Twice this week I had to pull

over and vomit.

I have been checked multiple times for ear problems and do not have any. I know

the vertigo can sometimes be part of fibromyalgia (which I also have), and my

rheumatologist suspects that is the cause. Nothing has changed in my medication,

eating habits, or job.

I am scheduled to see the doctor on 9/9. Should I wait 'til then to talk to her,

or call tomorrow?

Hi Kate,

Sometimes a calcium build along the jaw line, ear canal or along the base of the

neck/jawline can cause vertigo. Usually it goes away on its own, but yours

sounds like it has turned chronic. Try self massaging along the areas or going

to a massage therapist and explaining the problem. I have this problem myself

and have to self massage to keep the vertigo away.

Did you ever try the Epley manouevre? Here is a link to it on youtube

My vertigo was not as bad as yours but this did work for me and does for

many. There can be small bits of debris in the ear canal and this head

turning procedure sometimes successfully moves them so they don't cause

trouble\\

Kate,

I would talk to your primary doctor, something is not right. I've had

vertigo problems, it will come and go. I have meclizine to help me

during those times.

Your having a really bad time, so that worries me. Please see your

primary doctor, and keep us posted. You be careful, and make sure you

take the med for it, until you can be seen.

Be careful,

I've read others' posts about calcium build-up and so forth and that may

well be the problem-surely worth checking into. I have an auto-immune

disorder called Meniere's disease which causes severe vertigo where

literally you can't tell why way is up and which way is down. It's an inner

ear disorder that does not show up on MRIs or anything like that. It is

diagnosed mainly on symptoms and hearing tests (hearing loss is a symptom).

Please know that Meniere's is rare and most people who have vertigo don't

have it, but considering that most of us are here because of something

auto-immune, I thought I would add my experience as well.

Keep us posted!

her, or call tomorrow?

Last week I saw an episode on Meniere's disease on Mystery Diagnosis! It sounds

worse than even the RA!

[ ] Vertigo

I have been experiencing serious vertigo on and off for a few months. My

rheumatologist prescribed meclizine for me, but within the last 2 weeks the

vertigo is noticeably worse, and the meclizine isn't helping. I almost can't

drive because the world looks like it is spinning. Twice this week I had to

pull over and vomit.

I have been checked multiple times for ear problems and do not have any. I

know the vertigo can sometimes be part of fibromyalgia (which I also have),

and my rheumatologist suspects that is the cause. Nothing has changed in my

medication, eating habits, or job.

I am scheduled to see the doctor on 9/9. Should I wait 'til then to talk to

her, or call tomorrow?

Thanks ,

That is great information, and so helpul. I need to talk to my doctor

about that. I've had hearing loss for a long while, and have vertigo

just out of the blue. Do you have vertigo all the time?

Thanks for sharing,

I have BPPV and was misdiagnosed for a year! it was horrible! i tried all

matters of meds- couldnt drive bc i would have a dizzy spell out of the blue-

and even was hospitalized a few times for it! no one knew what it was - they

thought it was maybe menieres too and i would just have to live with it- or have

the nerve to the ear severed and still maybe not help but certainly lose the

hearing in the ear!!

then i went to a specialist to consult on this surgery, but she also asked if

i'd had the 'goggles test' & i hadnt (even tho id had all other tests- mri, ct

scans, bloodwork , the air in the ear thing, all several times)

so she put goggles on me & had my lie down with my head to the side then sit up-

and she said yup you ahve bppv!

i did some head movements there and immediately felt better!! after a year! it

was great!

so now i do head exercises morning and nite and it prevents the dizzy spells!

the bad thing is that the exercises are hard first thing in the am when i am

stiff from the ra- figures :)

but it is great not to be so helpless and miserable!
