Organic acid testing on the urine during time of illness provides the definitive answer. also has hypoglycemia with the more severe episodes. Hope this helps, Dena

Guest guest
If any of your kids are on Carnitor it can cause a very strong fishy odor in the urine and even from the pores. My daughter became very smelly this past fall (like a combination of old, bad fish and an outhouse in the hot sun). We decreased her Carnitor and the smell cleared right up. Unfortunately she became very grumpy and her tolerance for life was reduced. We upped her dose again and she does seem a bit happier, but she is starting to smell...oh well. There was a post on this list just a bit ago about a supplement that helps with the odor. I'm going to try that as soon as the New Year begins and life calms down a bit! The other thing that can cause the smell is a urinary tract infection...if your child is not on Carnitor it is probably worth mentioning to your doc. Take care, sassynlexnzac wrote: I am overly sensative to my kids symptoms, but since one has a metabolic condition i was wondering if its common for a stank urine smell. I know urine does not smell pretty on a good day but my kids can really be strong. It smells like amonia cleaner is all i can describe it as or a fishy smell to it. I was just wondering if its common for kids w/ metabolic conditions. Its not all the time, but mainly if they wake up from a long sleep or what not..... mom to zach, 17 months, glutaric aciduria type 2 alexis 3 fine Please contact mito-owner with any problems or questions. Guest guest
Hi, here I too had posted a concern with Cassie having moments off and on of urine smelling real strong by morning, even during the day-- her's would have the strong amonia cleaner smell as well. I don't recall anyone responding to my post. I hope we will get some responses--because I too am concerned about it. Does this mean a high acid level in the urine??(question to all on the mito site.) Also, I've noticed the urine to be very cloudy off and on. I believe when the urine is strong in odor. Strong smelling urine? > I am overly sensative to my kids symptoms, but since one has a > metabolic condition i was wondering if its common for a stank urine > smell. Guest guest
Dena Are there any specific symptoms beyond urine concerns that may indicate a ketone utilization disorder? Wondering if this may fit us. Guest guest
Hi Dena Thanks for your response. If and when Cassie starts to show these symptoms again with the urine, I'm going to have her tested for a bladder infection---in the past we have tested and most of the time come up negative. If the test should come up negative again, I was wondering if I could print out your post and show it to the doctor to get his feel and to educate him (if needed) on this situation-- not saying he's not on top of things but no one knows everything. Guest guest
our daughter and son have always had strong smelling urine but its random and mostly strong in the am or after a nap i guess when they're not eating and drinking as much. my daughter has been complaining her stomach hurts but shes 3 she always complains her stomach hurts when she eats. She just hates to eat and i have always just said its a phase but now i am starting to wonder. She doesnt have the attention span to sit and eat and half the time she doesnt want to.i havent been able to tell if its just a phase or related to this. We havent had any real episodes to tell when hes sick how his condition will affect him tg but its still hard not knowing. i have mentioned his urine smell tot he therapists a few times and he is not on carnitor and she said that it is common w/ kids w/ metabolic conditions. As for sickly sweet smelling i only read that for maple syrup disease is that related to that ketone thing that was mentioned here in these posts? our ped metabolic specialist has not seen us yet to tell us if my daughter needs to be tested. i am sure she will. They can prolly just by urine but how do you on a 3 year old that will be the trick. my daughter does not show any symptoms except some of the more advanced motor skills she is delayed in like running and throwing a ball and catching jumping and skipping but its coming. Zachs delays are more prominant..... > Hi Dena > Thanks for your response. Guest guest
Yes, definately urine smells weird with mito. Fishy smell could be from the carnitine. We always know Lexi is in acidosis when her urine or breath smells like nail polish remover. ruth for the hilandgang
Guest guest
I agree here...I remember smelling like a little fish...(smile) when he was on carnitine...and strong odours from his urine was due to...also acidosis, and when he was on a keto diet, his urine changed as well as his breath...ketones...no doubt Elaine hilandgang@... wrote: Yes, definately urine smells weird with mito.
