Hi,

I took Doxycycline 100mg twice a day for 6 weeks straight, then 100 mg

once a day for month, and now I am taking 100mg every other day and I don't

have any side effects thus far......

If I could just butt in with my own experience. I did not have much

success with antibiotics and stopped after taking them for two months.

My concern with long-term usage of antibiotics is that the ones

prescribed are broad-spectrum antibiotics. From what I know, long-term

use of such antibiotics can lead to a decrease in good intestine

bacteria. Also worrying (for me anyway) is that taking antibiotics for

so long may also mean they won't be as effective when we really do need

antibiotics for actual bacterial infections. Anyway, it is best to take

acidophilus supplements when taking antibiotics (I actually found this

out when I had a throat infection while on holiday in Finland and the

pharmacist recommended that I take acidophilus with the prescribed

antibiotics).

I'm currently only taking supplements of borage oil along with the usual

antioxidants, also apply Vitamin C on my face. I don't even use metrogel

or anything because my dermatologist said it would be too drying and he

said it doesn't help with the redness. I do not have any pimple-like

growth, just intense redness in my cheeks; its normally all right in the

day and then gets pretty red in the evenings. Still, the derm here

doesn't seem to have a clue as to what to do - I believe there are few

cases of rosacea among Asians.

Skylar,

I have heard of taking them before if one is on antibiotics but I never

got them because I really didn't think I needed them. HOWEVER, if I DID start

getting yeast infections I would take them.......

Yes, I worry about that too.......hopefully I can go off the Doxycycline soon

and only use it for emergencies like I used to...........

Tsung Mien,

Do you have any clue yet what your triggers are? What moisturizer are you

using? Do you apply it just in the morning and night or do you use it during

the day also?

Hi Esther,

I am very sure that thermally hot food/beverage triggers the redness -

sometimes just the steam from the food is enough to start a flush. I

guess I get redder in the evenings because that is when I cook, (its

pretty hard to avoid the steam when you stir-fry). Also, spicy foods are

a big no-no (this I find difficult, because I used to be able to eat

spicy stuff).

I am currently using the Skinceuticals moisturizer in the day time, with

the Skinceuticals sunscreen over it. At night, I use the Skinceuticals

vitamin C serum with the Skinceuticals moisturizer over it. I'm not sure

I like the moisturizer though, but I'm afraid of mixing products and

since this hasn't irritated my skin, I'm afraid to change my routine.

Tsung Mien,

Well, that's two triggers then you know about - heat and spicy foods. I have

a hard time cooking too. But heat's really a fairly easy trigger, you just

get cool as quickly as you can after - by using a wash cloth on your face or

neck for a couple of seconds, sipping cold drinks. It won't stop a flush, but

it will help it go away faster.

Spicy foods are harder. You really do have to avoid them outright if they are

a strong trigger. If it's a mild trigger, you can get away with the

moderation route. Don't suppose it's a mild trigger for you, eh? (crossing

fingers here)

I think more than half the battle with rosacea is just that. Finding products

you can use that don't irritate your skin. What don't you like about the

moisturizer?

Hi Esther,

Thanks so much for your encouraging words - it really made me feel a lot

better. I've been wallowing in self-pity the past week and just looking

at everything very negatively. You are so right - there are easy

solutions for my triggers.

Yes, I have found that sipping cold drinks really helps a flush go away.

I've been avoiding them outright because this definitely isn't a mild

trigger. Thinking about it now, it hasn't been so bad. Again, its been

more a case of me wanting something just because I know I can't have it.

You are so right. I remember how ecstatic I was when I finally found a

sunscreen that didn't irritate my skin. As for the moisturizer, I don't

like how it just sits on my skin and it doesn't really seem to absorb

well. (probably this is something I have to get used to).

Tsung Mien,

:) I'm just like that too. If I can't have something, I want it twice as

bad.

<<I remember how ecstatic I was when I finally found a

Which sunscreen do you like? I'm still searching here.

<< As for the moisturizer, I don't

Are you rubbing it in at all? Gently, gently, I mean. Too much rubbing can

backfire but alittle rubbing might help your skin to absorb more of it.

Maybe? I have that whenever I tried a gel. It just sits there and does

nothing.
