Kerry -

Just a quick question. When I was nursing both my boys, my ob/gyn kept me on

prenatal vitamins -- didn't need anything else. Did your doctor take you off

them or does he know you are still nursing? I was also tested for lupus and

the test was negative, thank God. Sometimes in life the phrase, " the glass is

half-fulll, never half-empty " comes into play alot.

Esther -

Are you in the medical field (doctor, nurse, etc.)? You seem to have solid

information on most of the topical and oral meds presently used.

Thanks Debbie. I I treated myself to Ben and Jerry's Dilbert (which meant I

had to stay up late and express milk so the ice cream wouldn't get to my

allergic baby, but it was worth it!) Most things with lots of sugar or any

cornsyrup (bigtime trigger for me) make me break out, but Dilbert doesn't.

I can't explain it, but I'm extremely thankful. Before cea I was a

sugar and chocolate junkie. I haven't had chocolate for almost 2 years, and

I still crave it.

About itching, I itch a little, but have more trouble with pain. My face

actually hurts, especially my nose and cheeks. I thought that itching was a

common symptom though, and it has happened to me on occasion. When I get a

big flare, my eyes also go red and gritty and it's not a pretty sight.

Has anyone else read about the possibility of severe mineral deficiency

being a factor in rosacea? Considering my history (which I'll share if

anyone is interested) this would make sense to me. I read about it, and

follow a vit and min supplement schedule which is supposed to help my skin.

I think it does, doesn't hurt my health anyway, and I was wondering if

anyone else was doing this. When my rosacea started, my hair was tangling

up constantly in awful knots-sort of sticking to itself, and when I started

the vit. and min.s this stopped. If I forget to take some of them for a few

days, it starts to happen again. Does this happen to anyone else?

Does anyone else have tiny red dots on their skin on other parts of their

body? If this is a vascular disease as suspected, I assume it is affecting

our whole systems. When my rosacea started, I also got these tiny red dots

on the rest of my body (which I think are a problem with blood vessels also)

and all the dermatologist said was, " those are hard to treat. " Anyone else?

One more question-I'm just full of them today! The dermatologist told me

that fluorescent lights were not a problem, but they certainly are for me.

Is anyone else sensitive to these lights? It's crippling because I haven't

found a sunscreen I can tolerate yet, which means I can't do anything under

these lights (which are everywhere) without a hat.

Re: being thankful. It's very true that there are much worse things. I am

reminded that I am lucky daily when I look at my children who have celiac

disease and many food allergies, and remember that our closest friends from

college lost their only child because he was born too early and couldn't

survive. cea does take a psychological toll that shouldn't be

underestimated-that's why we're all here!-but I was tested for lupus and a

variety of other things along the way, and by the time the diagnosis came

in, cea was looking pretty good!

Thanks for listening!

Kerry,

I was really run down too.......last year I started seeing a homeopath for my

problems. After 1 year I was doing much better. He had me on all sorts of

different supplements. I don't get as tired now and I take echinacea every day

to keep my immune system built up. He said that selenium would be good for

that also. My son takes zinc everyday for his allergies. He has helped myself

and the kids this past year. I also cut out sugar (he said it was bad for the

immune system) and try to eat a good diet. Hope this helps!

Margaret,

Nope, just another obessed rosacea sufferer. I've read everything I can get

my hands on. Luckily, AOL has had two support boards for rosacea for awhile.

It's so good to share tips and I've learned tons from reading everyone's

posts.

Kerry-

Whenever I have a rosacea flare-up (from foods), my skin gets blotchy all over.

I also have rosacea on my upper legs. I don't mind this as much as I do having

it on my face, though. In all the years I have had this I didn't notice the

blotchy skin until about a year ago.

My doctor does know all about what's happening with me, and I'm happy to

say, encourages me to seek information for myself. The vitamin regimen I

currently follow is something I found in a book by an MD while doing

research on rosacea, and it is much more comprehensive than prenatals.

Unfortunately for me, the most commonly prescribed prenatals in this country

(US) don't even come close to providing all the vitamins and minerals we

need. If I had known this, I would have taken something better during

pregnancy and might be healthier than I am now. I just found out I have

Mono (again) and need to get lots of rest. (A real joke with 4,3, and 1

year-olds running around and a spouse who also has mono!) What a year!

Thank you for all the info you gave on cola. It's funny but today I am having

such a bad day w/rosacea and I can't for the life of me figure out what

triggered it. It is so baffling when you think you might have the upper hand

of this and life just throws you a curve ball.

Pat,

Mineral deficiency seems likely in my case because of the following:

-As a teenager I suffered from eating disorders for years.

-I am a suspected celiac, and 28 years of not eating gluten-free would

result in terrible malabsorption.

-I had 3 babies in just over 3 years, and my rosacea began at the end of the

third pregnancy.

I'm glad to know that someone else has some of the same symptoms that I do.

Would you mind telling me more about yourself and when yours started etc...?

Thanks!

This is Helen answering Kerry:

I also do not itch but when I have a flareup my nose and cheeks prickle with

pain (especially my nose).

I have never had a problem with my eyes, but one of my friends has had a

particularly bad case of ocular rosacea. I shall e-mail her and suggest she

jon the group.

Yes, I have little red dots all over my body and they started when my

rosacea flared up. I never put the two together, however. In 1976, when I

was seeing my derm. about rosacea (which he didn't diagnose and which I

didn't know I had until last year), I asked about the red dots. He said they

were " normal " and I needn't worry about them.

Actually, having had red dots for 22 years, I would say they are the least

of my problems. They don't hurt or itch or get bigger. And since I stay out

of the sun completely, nobody but my husband ever sees them.

Hello Lucy Donna

Welcome to the group. Can I ask you if zithroxax is an oral antibiotic? I

was never on that and I feel like I have run the gammut on meds for rosacea.

Hope you enjoy the group.

I had my first (and only) child ten years ago when I was 42 years old, and my

rosacea became noticeable when he was about 3 years old. Before that I had very

clear skin.

I was fortunate that tetracycline and metrogel reduced the inflammation

considerably, and it has been controlled, until recently, by using a line of

skin care products which worked remarkably well. (I have no affiliation etc.)

Recently the inflammation has become more severe, and I have ordered the rosacea

disks.

Reading about other people's triggers is very helpful to me. I am working on

cutting down on, in order to eventually eliminate, caffeine and sugar -- I was

very interested to learn that corn syrup is a trigger for some people. So far,

stress, alcohol, and heat seem to be my worst ones.

hi Margret,

Yes it is an oral antibiotic,...I was on it before 250mgx 1 a day for 5

days then everyother day for the summer...it worked so good i came off it

early and haven't had to use it again since August...Seems me not taking care

of myself and not drinking enough water and not getting enough exercising has

done me in..when i last saw my derm in oct she said if i needed to to go back

on for 5 days then off it...will see how quick it works...I love it cause

its once a day and doesn't bother my stomach....If you want information on

any Meds..there is a pharmacist DKazarian@... who is more than willing to

give any info on any drug...he is vry compassionate and vry

informative...please feel free to e-mail him...

And thanks for the welcome

O.K. -

I need some opinions. My 7 year old son came home from school crying today.

After he composed himself he told me that two of his " best " friends keep

telling the class to look at his face and how red it gets when he is asked a

question or gets told to stop doing something. Can you believe this. I think

this is a rosacea sufferer's worst nightmare come true. I always said " God,

do what you want to me but my kids let be. " I am truly sick of this condition

and knowing how deep this runs in my psyche, I don't know how to tell him to

" except " this and move on. Any suggestions?

Oh, Margaret. I am so sorry. Kids can be so cruel. My daughter had a

terrible fungus infection on her face for about four months. (it took that

long to get a diagnose, can you believe it?) The boys were the worst at

teasing her. I don't have a clue what to tell you or him. I know I cried

harder for her than I ever cried for myself. And trust me, early on, I did a

lot of crying right along with flaring. :) Knowing he flushes so deeply and

that rosacea runs in families, I would cover him in sunscreen and stick a

baseball hat on him daily to help him not get rosacea. Maybe he could

practice asking questions at home, pretending you are the teacher, to get

over the nervousness?

This is a tough one Margaret, and something I'm sure I'll have to face as my

kids get older. On the bright side, at least you can prepare him (where I

think most of us got a real shock) and show him all the tricks to keep it

under control. You can teach him to care for his skin, and show him that a

person is much more than his/her face. It's been psychologically traumatic

for me also, and I'm truly thankful for my husband-this man defines

unconditional love. Some evil force could turn me into a warthog and my

spouse would still be able to make me feel special!

I used to blush easily also as a kid. Try not to make your horror his.

Everyone has something about them people (esp kids) can make fun of. I dealt

with it simply by ignoring it, even at that young of age. I used to tell kids

" ya that's my problem I wonder what yours is " . But only when ignoring them

didn't work. If it wasn't this they would find something else to pick on him

for. Your reaction will be his reaction, if you act like it is a big deal so

will he. Don't minimize his feelings but try not to project yours on him. IMO
