Antibiotics that help suppress rosacea, other than tetracycline are: erythromycin (ask for the enteric coated ones so you won't have gastrointestinal symptoms); ampicillin (I don't like to use this because it is often used for other infections elsewhere and you don't want to become resistant to this); Some doctors give trimethoprim/sulfa ( I don't like this either because of side effects).

Doxycycline and minocycline which are very effective and are lipophilic types of tetracycline derivative, meaning they have affinity to go to the oil glands.

antibioticsDoes anyone know of any oral antibiotics other than tetracycline that help rosacea? I am allergic to tetracycline and from the feedback I received on erythromycin it doesn't appear to be very helpful with the rosacea. I wonder if there are any other antibiotics that might be helpful. Does anyone know?

Thanks,

I use Doxycycline but you would have to ask the dr if you could take it.

Tetracycline didn't help me at all.......Good Luck.....

Hi and all,

I'm new to this list and was only diagnosed with rosacea this past week. I, like

you , was put on Noritake topical cream once a day. My dermatologist is a

good one, and she didn't think antibiotics was the way to go with with me

either, because I don not have a problem with acne associated with my rosacea. I

am more than willing to see if the Noritake will work without having to use

antibiotics along with it. I'm very happy that only having used the Noritake for

four days now, I have noticed a marked difference. The stinging and burning

sensation have 90% subsided and the redness has about 50% subsided. I wish I had

gone to the dermatologist sooner.

I'm happy this list exists and am looking forward to gaining beneficial

information from all who are unfortunate enough to have to also deal with this

problem.

One of the biggest problems that I am having associated with my rosacea is dry,

itching, burning, and gritty feeling eyes. I went to the opthamologist

yesterday, and was put on sterile, preservative free eyedrops four times a day.

I hope this will help but so far have only noticed slight difference. I was

wondering if anyone else has had problems with their eyes associated with the

rosacea.

Thanks to all who contribute, and Happy Holidays to All!

that the oral antibiotics are mainly for the pimples not the redness and

flushing. All she suggested was to try the Noritate because she said it should

help the flushing/redness. Does anyone know if this sounds right? I am thinking

of getting another dermatologist, because it doesn't seem like this one wants to

work with me. I am very discouraged because I want to find something that helps.

This rosacea is hurting my self esteem. I also was at CVS the other night and

looked for zinc oxide. The closest that I could find to plain zinc oxide was

zinc oxide ointment, which did have other ingredients in it. Does anyone know if

they make plain zinc oxide and where I would find that? I know that they used to

use it as a sunblock, so it must be available somewhere.

DEBORAH,

I have the same problem with my eyes, and the only thing that stopped it was finding my triggers. In my case, the main things are foods and chemicals (especially whatever they put on new clothes in the stores).

HARRIET,

I too get a red and swollen nose with this, and metrogel alone didn't control the symptoms on my nose. I've said this several times and nobody has ever responded in any way, but my derm gave me a prescription for benzamycin to use only on my nose. It is an acne medicine-usually a no-no for rosacea-but it works GREAT on my nose. It stops the swelling, pimples, and most of the redness. Just recently I discovered that I can get the rest of the redness with Desitin (and that goes for the redness on my cheeks too.) When I use the Desitin, I have to use a moisturizer.

PLATO,

Count me in for fair skin and blue-green eyes! I think both of my parents have this condition, although neither have been diagnosed. They were both born in England of English and English/Irish parents. One has blue eyes and one has brown.

That's the one I use. I haven't had any trouble with it. But my skin is very

dry and loves this stuff. The usual caution is needed. You know, go slow, go

light till you are sure it's good for you and your skin. It's a pain to rub

in. It's dead white. If you add vaseline, it'll makes it easier. If you can

tolerate makeup and put a drop in, it's even easier. But easy does it till

you are comfortable with it. Zinc oxide doesn't work as quickly as Desitin

seems to. Give it a few days before you decide it's not working. OK? If you

hate it (and you just might) don't give up on the other zinc products. Each

of them seems to work better for different skin types.

Good luck.

- I also have a very sensitive stomach and therefore alot of problems

when I'm on antibiotics. I went to a new derm. 6 weeks ago who was fantastic!

and he put me on Cirpro 500 twice a day for only 2 weeks. I had absolutely no

reaction and the bumps on my face that were creating pimple like whiteheads

are now gone. I''m also using Noritate every night.

At the same time I also had a Photoderm laser treatment on my cheeks for the

redness...after 2 weeks my skin looked so much better. 1 week ago I had

another treatment and am slowly seeing an improvement after the initial

irritation.

I've also used almost every skin care product under the sun...with not very

good results. I swiched to a product called ExCell and my skin is much

smoother and the flakeyness I always had is gone. I spent over a year just

using the minumin, ie. cetaphil cleanser and no moisturiser and have to say

that now that I'm using something my skin looks much better.

What's ExCell? Any clue what the ingredients are?

Bill/Ester -

The Excel is a cleanser, night serum (Vit C, AHA's), and a moisturiser. I got

it at my derm. office. The photoderm is a newer type of laser that doesnt'

have the side effects of brusing, swelling, etc. It's a laser they use for

removing port wine birthmarks, tatoos, spider veins. The downside is that is

was very expensive - $250. For me it was really the last thing I could try -

antibiotics and topicals just didn't make any difference. My skin just kept

getting worse and worse! My derm. has a website where you could see some info

about the photoderm - it's at www.skindeepusa.com. Then mabye you could

discuss with your derm. next week. He also one of the particiapating dr's on

www.womenintheknowskin.com website.

I very rarely have flushing with my cea - My cheeks were a flame red that

never went away - now that I think about it I had some flushing about 5 years

ago when this started. After my first treatment it took about 2 weeks to see

a difference, my hubby even asked if I was wearing makeup! After I had the

second a week ago, I'm noticing that my cheeks are redder and I had a little

swelling. I think my face was so bad before the first one that I didn't

notice it before.

Like I said, this was a " last ditch " effort for me. I was so tired of

spending money on derm. appt. and prescriptions that didn't work or made

things worse. I just decided to bite the bullet and spend the money. This is

the first dr. I have been to who also does cosmetic procedures - I can tell

you one thing, I was treated totally different! He didn't walk in with a

prescription already written out and a bored look on his face!

Good luck to you!!

Re: the timeframe this should last: My derm. said everyone is different - but

he showed me some photos (and I called one of the gals) 2 years after and they

didn't look any redder to me. He said one gal came in and said she thought

her skin was getting red again, and when they looked back at the pictures, it

was obvious how red she used to be. If I have to get the treatment every 3-5

years that's ok with me! At least I won't be spending money on appts., taking

prescription drugs, or feeling as bad about my skin.

i am amazed that any derm doc would use a webpage address with pus in

it..that is the only word i see when i look at that address...

i am so leery of these new derm docs with the $$$ lasers etc..i have a

friend..who is friends with one...and i know he pushes these expensive

treatments...( he tells her a bunch of his tactics) and it really turns

me off....i won't go to him because of this..and i am sure he is probably

a good doc..but the almighty buck is leading his practice now..

glad you have a good guy working with you...

Donna,

I'm gonna look up the skindeepusa site for information on the photoderm.

I usualy get cheeks--frontal areas--that become flame red in the cold

winter winds, and have people giving me " helpful " bits of advice regarding

the overuse of blusher--Ha! Are you kidding? I usually just inform them

that it's my " cold weather rash " and leave it at that.

Thanks!

Donna--My main problem is redness and esp. swelling across my cheeks and

nose--Did the cipro help this-- or just the acne part-- Also from what I've

read cipro is only indicated if you have the helio-pylori factor--did your

dr. mention this

-Also does photoderm treatment reduce swelling or only the redness-It sounds

like a fairly mild treatment--

Would appreciate anything from anyone on combatting the swelling--I seem to

react to every topical--My dr. is talking about putting me on tetracycline for

21 days then going back to sulfacet and azelex--

Thanks --

Billie

Darlene,

Doxycycline also causes photosensitivity (I think all tetracyclines

do). I tried to go off the doxycycline since my face was in really good

shape & my eyes were " so, so " -- which seems to be as good as they get

anymore. I was off for about a week & " boom " -- big break-outs --

bummer. I was really disappointed. I know how you feel -- hopefully

the photoderm will be worth it for you in the long run though.

I haven't taken Keflex for rosacea, but I do have to take it to pre medicate for

dental cleanings because of mitral valve prolapse. On my last dental cleaning,

I was concerned about having to take the Keflex when I was already on oral

erthymycin 2 times a day. I called my primary care physician to find out if I

even needed to take the keflex since I'm on antibiotics and her reply was that

it didn't hurt to take the keflex and be on the erthymycin because they had

different purposes. According to my doctor, the erthymycin was more suitable

for the skin; whereas the keflex was not and vice versa.

I'd also be curious about the oral metronizadale since I'm using topical

metro-gel.

I have been taking Keflex, 500 mg, 3x/day for the last two weeks for a cyst on

my back. I don't know if two weeks is any indication, but it hasn't done

anything for my rosacea (although it is mild compared to many here). I did,

however, end up with a yeast infection.
