,

I just met with my PCP on Wednesday. He had his nurse set up my

Psych eval and then he sent a referal to the nutritionist. I started

bugging them the same afternoon but it wasn't until the next day that

they called me to schedule the appointment. I was a little upset

because they make sure they have all of my phone numbers on record

and then they called me at home instead of work. I was so glad that

my boyfriend was home and took the message. The appointment isn't

until March 6th but I plan to call and bother them every day for

cancellations. I go to Antioch Kaiser so it may be different in Sac

but I would start calling tomorrow.

I'm not Pat, but I do know the answer to this one. I'm a Kaiser member at South Sac too. Your PCP should send in the referral for the pre-bariatric surgery nutrition consult. It is actually a group meeting, with about 15 people. You can try calling the nutrition department and see if they got your referral. They called me (about a month after I saw my PCP).

Dear Laurie,

I am . I am a Kaiser member and live in . I just attended the nutrician appointment. It was very discouraging as we were told only 20-25% of the people attending the nutrition class will be approved to have surgery.

Does my PCP have to make the psych appointment for me, or do I make it?

Thanks for your input.

You have to be referred to the nutritionist by your PCP. Once you know the referral went in, call the nutritionist and find out when you can get an appt. If you have a flexible schedule, find out if they get cancellations and tell them you are available for a cancellation. You must be proactive in this process so that you don't get left behind! Hope that helps.

Hugs,

Pat B.

Hi ,

Don't believe it. ;-))))) I think they are just trying to weed out people who aren't really serious. When you look at the big picture, a lot of people are probably looking into it but decide not to go through with it. That would account for a large percentage of people who "aren't approved." In general, if you meet Kaiser's criteria, you will likely be approved.

Your PCP sent in the referral for your psych appointment, probably at the same time as the nutritionist one. Call Psych and see if you can get an appointment yourself. I believe you don't have to have a referral to see Psych, anyway.

You do not need a referral for the psych appt. Call and make the appt yourself. As for the 20-25% being approved, I would suggest you not think of yourself as one of a group of people or a statistic. You are focusing on your health. If you meet the Kaiser criteria, you most likely will be approved. If you are close to the Kaiser criteria and are not approved, you can file an appeal and if you meet the criteria of the NIH, you will most likely be approved. Don't be discouraged, keep being your own advocate for your health.

Dear Laurie,

Yippee! I received a notice today that I was "referred" to Pacific Bariatric. Does that mean I am "approved". What does that mean as far as a time line? I was told to contact them. Will they require the weight loss. I am at a BMI of 40 and have been waiting on a large weight loss, as I am afraid they will would disqualify me if I lost too much. What comes next? If anyone can give me an idea of what comes next, I would be very interested.

I can't believe they are saying OK!!!!!!!!!!!
