Guest guest
Hi, Steve is right about the crime rate being higher in Durham, BUT there are nice places in Durham and the crime area folks tend to stay in their area. AND, it's not the kind of place you can't drive thru during the day, but you definitely don't have to go through that area to get around town. (I don't remember the last time I was over there and I live near the hospital.) One of the differences between Durham and Raleigh is the traffic. Raleigh traffic is more like big city traffic (and I've lived in Baltimore). Riding isn't all that comfortable right after surgery. If you want to get out of Durham, the RTP (Research Triangle Park) is about 20 minutes away and there are nice places there to stay. Guest guest
Don't forget about the option of staying in Raleigh or Research Triangle Park instead of Durham, especially if you will have somebody else there to do the driving. It is not as convenient to be sure (it would probably be about a 10-20 mile trip each way, depending where you stayed in Raleigh/RTP), but it would be a lot safer and probably nicer as well. I am a resident of the Raleigh-Durham area, so I have personal knowledge that a lot of other people on this board don't have. In these parts Durham is well-known for having a much higher crime rate (especially murder) than Raleigh. And from my visit to the clinic in Durham this last weekend, I can attest that the clinic is not that far at all from a fairly undesirable neighborhood--this is something to consider if you're especially looking for a hotel very close to the clinic/hospital. In addition, Raleigh and RTP are just nicer looking places than Durham (though someone from the industrial Northeast would find Durham very familiar looking). I urge all you non-locals to think about this, and check it out with any other locals you can find on the board. Good luck everyone Steve
Guest guest
Let me help you out. When you get off 147 and go through town there are black people and they will eat you up if you go through there. If you get out of the car they will murder you and kidnap you because they have run out of food stamps. They love to run down the street after cars and capture white people. I saw them. So you probably should stay out of Durham for your own safety. It is really bad there. I saw a big black boiling pot in the middle of town with five or six white people in it . The black people were preparing dinner for all the residents in that old section. They had put celery, carrots and onions and Thunderbird wine in the pot while they simmered the white people and were baking a hugh pan of cornbread and watermelon for dessert.. Ummmm good dinner. Stay out of Durham, please I wouldn't want to lose you too. Jean
Guest guest
I am white, well sort of pink or maybe beige in color but that doesn't matter, I think you are sooo funny! Thanks for the laugh today! I needed it!! I am printing this off to let my husband read! We went to Durham with no problems whatsoever. Believe me, we are from AL and have never been to Durham and had no clue as to what was what but I have to tell you we had a very good experience and everyone was very nice to us. We even ate breakfast one morning in that " area " . I love ALL people and yes, it does pay to be smart and be aware of your surroundings just to be safe but we shouldn't stereo type people by appearances. I am from AL but I assure you there is no inbreeding in my family!! LOL! in AL
Guest guest
Can you recommend a Suites type of hotel, ie Resident Inn or something VERY nice in the Raleigh or CHapel Hill area? THanks. Guest guest
HEHEHEHEHE! Actually I was about to say that I have found Durham to be very nice. I think that if you stay aware and do not do anything stupid that you will be fine. I have a girl friend who lives near Durham and I have to take 85 out to her place and it is fairly deserted as far as I can tell and the last time I was there I found getting from 85 to Dr Rs' office to be a breeze and when leaving I tried going through Durham because I was going to hop on 40 for my folks in Wilmington and got lost and was treated to a lovely neighborhood of 1940's style bungalow homes and just rode it( i think it was 50 something hyway) out til I ended up in Chapel Hill. It was then a hop skip and jump to 40. The friend I was talking about has a hubby who is an engineer and works in the triangle but they have always lived in the area around Durham despite a long comute sometimes. If you stay on the beltway and get on the computer and find maps ect then you will be fine! Oh and for those living in square states, NC can be a bit confusing due to its funny shape and that things do not always run north south east west. Ok I am done if you all would like any maps I do have a map program so just let me know and maybe it will allow me to send them. Guest guest
Would like to add my two cents for what it is worth about the racial topics being discussed here on the list, while it is meant with no harm intended, please keep an open view as to what is said and how it can be misunderstood by others. If I was an African-American considering this procedure, I may find the recent topics concerning crime etc, offensive. We are here to support each other with concerns surrounding weight loss surgery and obesity issues. We are here to provide a warm, supportive and non-threatening environment respecting the dignity, individuality and viewpoints of all participants. This list should be used as a means to allow for informal expression of personal experiences and information, which will enrich a person's life. I strongly encourage you to keep this in mind when you make such open-ended statements. Asking, how will someone feel after reading my email. I am sure right now there are some saying, well I don't feel good about her email, but I am just trying to point out that this is read by all races of people, working classes and various educational levels. Keep respect in the mind! As always, just my two cents!!

Guest guest
Oh, this makes a lot of sense. Come on, people! We have more than enough going on in our lives that is negative. More than enough people telling us we're not " all right " and that we should be seen and not heard because of our size. In every heart in every person on this list, there is more than enough hurt and pain. If we were to put our pain and hurt into a basket and pass it around, NONE of us would take someone else's pain and hurt as our own. Not because we wouldn't want to try to help each other; because our own pain and hurt would seem so much more bearable in comparison. I have such hope for each of us. We are so special. When a family has a tiff or there is a situation which goes sour, a family pulls together and reinforces its mission to love and accept each member of that family...regardless. At least, the families on Ozzie and Harriet always did! Look at us. Don't you have a special regard in your heart for each and every one of the people who share their lives with you on this list? Haven't we all been told enough times by those who are not our size that we don't count? That we're stupid? That we're dumb? That we're ignorant? You know the things that are done to us daily by people who just don't get it. How can we do this to one another? Please, dear friends; quitting and hiding from each other is not an answer or an option. I'm counting on you. And you. And you. And you. I'm counting on you for love and acceptance and a smile. I don't mind if you're having a bad hair day...I'm still counting on you. And you definitely can count on me. Now...group HUG!
