I could be wrong, but I think it is 1 tablespoon a day? I tried to grind them

w/a mortar and pestle, didn't work. I called my local herb store and they have

it already ground, 16 oz. for $7.95. I am going to go that route as I have been

putting them on stuff, they chew O.K., but if I am not processing them, it is

kind of pointless. I like the flavor, though.

Good Morning Everyone,

I ground some flaxseeds yesterday and put a good sized tablespoon of

it on lowfat cottage cheese with some blueberries. I had more than

that amount last night with a berry snack. How much flaxseed is

recommended? I don't seem to find a chart with the amount of fiber

listed. I like to keep plenty of fiber in my diet, but don't want to

overdo it beginning a new item in my diet. Any advice from other

flaxseed munchers in this group?

Thanks,

I usually use a tablespoon or so over ricotta with berries or sugar-free syrup.

When I make meatloaf or hamburgers, I mix about 1/3 to 1/2 cup per pound of

meat.

Flaxseed Amounts?

Thank you, I will invest in a coffee grinder. I guess I can't just keep it in

the fridge?

,

Please dont buy already ground flaxseed, apparently doing that lets

them lose their goodness and they can go rancid. Buy only what you

can use fairly quickly, in the whole seed. Or buy a coffee grinder

and grind what you need at one time that way. Keep them in the

fridge in a jar.

I put flaxseed in my bread machine when I make my whole wheat bread,

about 1/3 cup whole seeds. I also add bran and oat bran, wheat

flakes etc.

I don't know the carbs of flaxseed, but I know the oil from the

flaxseed is excellent for your body. Unless the carb load is too

high, I personally would not feel a need to limit it, this is a

great, healthy food.

I bought my flaxseed from the bulk section of Rainbow Groceries, here

in San Francisco. If you have a place that sells rice, beans, flour,

etc. in bulk bins, that is the way to go. I paid .88 per pound. A

health food store will sell the very same seeds for more than 20

times that amount. If you've got some kind of thrift store

available, a used coffee grinder can be found for a dollar or two.

Look around and see if you can find a good bulk grocer. It's worth a

drive to get to one.

I got a small electric coffee grinder from K-Mart; very cheap. I use the

flaxseed meal whenever the rec. calls for e.g. bread crumbs or something like

that.

If you eat them whole, they won't do you any good as you can't digest them;

they'll pass right through you and the only benefit will be that they'll provide

a bit of fibre.

You could, but unless the store keeps the ground meal in their refrigerated

section, you don't know how long it has been sitting on the shelf.

You can also order them online from several places. There is no bulk grocer

around here, so that's my route.

I keep the whole seeds in the fridge in a glass jar, from everything

I've read, you should not have a large amount of it ground up and

sitting around, so I think the coffee grinder might be a good

investment for you unless you can buy the seeds close to home as you

need them. Also that ground price you mentioned is expensive, flax

seeds are not costly.
