Hello everyone. I want to take this opportunity to make you aware of the

support group that has formed at Durham Regional Hospital. Our first meeting

was held on September 25th, 1999 and very productive. Several topics for future

meetings were discussed. I apologize, I do not have that information with me

here at work or I would post what the discussion revolved around. I will do

this over the weekend. I want to thank all of you that attended. We had

pre-ops, post-ops and Dr. Rutledge present. Great mix of folks!

Our next meeting is scheduled for October 30th, 1999 again at Durham Regional

Hospital Auditorium. A social hour will take place between 2-3PM with the

meeting from 3-5PM. Snacks will be provided during social hour. A clothing

exchange is scheduled between 2-3PM for those interested. Any clothing not

wanted will be donated to hurricane Floyd victims on the East coast. Your

participation in this worthy cause is greatly appreciated.

A calendar of events is in the making. We are hoping to have a guest speaker at

the November 20th meeting to

discuss " weighty issues " surrounding the holidays. At the December 18th

meeting, Ms. Debra Stroud, Nutritionist, has agreed to come discuss nutritional

needs for those after surgery and during the holidays.

All meetings will begin promptly at 3PM and are open to everyone. You do not

have to have the surgery to join us. If you or someone you know is dealing with

issues surrounding morbid obesity, please encourage them to attend.

As always, I look forward to meeting you at the next meeting. Please feel free

to contact me at apexkas@... for additional information. Have a great

weekend. See you October 30th, 1999!!

Hi everyone! Here as promised, to let you know some of the topics that will

be discussed at upcoming support group meetings. At the first meeting held

in September we took a few minutes to explain to each other, who we are, why

we came to a support group meeting and what our expectations are for future

meetings.

We identified several topics that we will discuss at future meetings. Those

topics are as follows:

--- Emphasis or focus on weight versus looks.

--- Concepts around " health " versus reaching a " target " weight.

--- Importance of educating " ourselves. " Gaining knowledge and strength

through

own personal insight and experience versus society.

--- Improvements in quality of life!

--- What affect does the " scale " have on image?

--- How does one deal with family members that do not have a weight issue.

What

impact will your weight loss have on the family?

--- External goals such as improving society's view on obesity. Including

such

areas as insurance issues/coverage, benefit coverage, government

backing of

studies on obesity, coverage with the American Disability Act, as

well as

others.

The next scheduled meeting is October 30th, 1999 beginning at 2PM with social

hour. At that time a clothing exchange will be scheduled. Any clothing that

you would like to donate to flood victims on the East coast would be

appreciated. I will arrange for delivery to the people coordinating the

program. They are in desperate need of large size clothing of all sizes.

The support group meeting will begin promptly at 3PM lasting until 5PM. At

this time, we will address some of the above issues in greater detail.

The November 20th, 1999 meeting again will be held at Durham Regional

Hospital, same time frame. At this time we do not have a confirmed speaker.

We are seeking a mental health professional to discuss WLS and it's affect on

the patient as well as family members. Also we are hoping to address the

issues surrounding food and stress with the upcoming holidays fast

approaching.

On December 18th, 1999 we will have Ms. Debra Stroud, Nutritionist address

nutritional needs for post-ops and again, touch on holiday topics.

If you have a suggestion or would like to discuss a topic in more detail,

please feel free to email me at apexkas@.... Remember, this is a

" support group " meaning, your input is important also. The common goal is to

share our vast knowledge with each other. Everyone's experience is different

and unique. How one deals with it is the key to attitude and the way one

interacts with others. Essential skills such as creativity, innovation,

visioning, communication, problem solving, decision making, adapting to

change, and even lifestyle management are all a common bond that we share.

Plan on attending the next support group meeting and grow with us. Looking

forward to seeing you all there.

Sorry I will be unable to attend this support group meeting. The last one

was fun. I have a soccer torunament in Morhead City with my younger son. We

finished first in the regionals last week and because we did so well---we are

rewarded with another out of town trip next weekend!!!!!!! We won four games

in two days--not bad for a U13 Rec team. Fo Greensboro Speed. Wish us luck.

I will be thinking of you all next Saturday while I am cheering on the team.

I had high hopes of being at this meeting, but unfortunately the Norfolk

Grand Illuminaion Parade has to come first for me this weekend. Hopefully,

I'll be able to make it to the next support group meeting. Hope everyone has

a great time.

I sure wish I could come to the support group meeting. If anybody ever

needed support right now it is me. I would love to hear the radio program

too. Something tells me I may die right here at the computer, plunking

along. Oh well, if the Lord is ready for me, so be it. I am ready. I have

a clear conscience. I have been a good daughter, wife, mother, grandmother,

sister, aunt, cousin, friend, neighbor, you name it, been there done that.

So if I get to have the surgery it will be wonderful. If I die and go on to

heaven it will be even better. Have fun at the support meeting. Eliz

: Thanks for taking the time to get the support group meetings organized in

the first

place and now for typing out the handouts. I kjnow there are a lot of folks who

will

appreciate the info since they couldn't attend in person!

Now, if we could find a way to get the material to all of the people who are not

only not

on this list, but don't even have computers!!!

Thanks for your time!

Stevie
