Hi,

I would appreciate any ANY thing further demonstrating that the DARE Program

is not working. I have anecdotal evidence from youth but nothing else. Since

Van is going implement this porgram I hope you will help saving them the

trouble and the confusioon which will arise among youth. Thanks.

Ross (Rocky) , Mayor of Salt Lake City, has killed the

quarter

million dollar funding for police involvement, effectively ending the

DARE program in Salt Lake City schools. DARE stands for Drug Abuse

Resistance Education and was started by former LAPD chief Daryl Gates.

is quoted in the Salt Lake Tribune, " This is not about

sentimentality. It's not about making us feel good. It's not about

asking

our kids what makes them feel good after they graduate from DARE, " he

said. " It's about science. It's about results. DARE is clearly not

the

answer, and we need to face up to it. "

Proponents of the program had this to say, " I don't have any

statistics

for you, " acknowledged Kathy , president of DARE

Officers. " Our

strongest numbers are the numbers that don't show up. "

I heard say on the radio this AM (paraphrased), 'If anyone

can

show me even one longitudinal study, of 5 or 10-years length, of

DARE,

published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal, I'll eat that

study.'

They did a study here that indicated that DARE doesn't work, but

instead of abandoning it, they decided to do it more often. This is

definitely anecdotal because it's from a newspaper article that I

read

years ago, probably before this group was formed.

Carol--

I live in Blaine, just across the border from you. Several years ago

the police department dicontinued the DARE program because some study

or studies indicatied that it was ineffective. Don't know what

studies these were, but I might be able to find our be asking the

officers who were involved in the DARE program. Let me know if you

need the info.
