I qualify for disability Medicare, but have never applied because I have always worked. But if Medicare pays on this then maybe that is the route I should persue??? I have had all my life. It is inoperable because it is rigid. The vertebra have fused together naturally. It's really a great way to talk to other folks, both pre- & post-op, and Dr R is so great. On insurance, read the policies carefully and find out if they specifically exclude this type of surgery. If they do, it makes things much harder, though not necessarily impossible. Best of luck. This is the best thing I've ever done for myself. UT-Austin has a wonderful campus full of terrific educational and cultural opportunities. The libraries there are fabulous. If you're a needleworker, the area is FULL of needlework shops, fabric shops, fiber/yarn shops. The folks there are an eclectic mix and very friendly. Their thinking is well if we pay for this surgery now, we won't have to pay for all the other health problems down the road which would end up being much more costly!!!!! One of the reps actually told me this. I would think the two would be similar, but you never know with the government!!! Good luck!!!! I found Dr. R's website, and read every single line in the whole thing. After doing a lot of research on the net, I decided I wanted to pursue having this surgery. When I talked it over with my husband, he was all for it! I live here in NC, so I started making Dr.'s appointment, etc. THEN - we found out we are moving to Texas! I still want to have surgery with Dr. R, but of course now it is more complicated. I have a couple of questions from anyone who is willing to answer them! 1. I will be in NC until November 6. Is there anything I really should do that would be easier to do while I am still in state? 2. I will be changing insurance when my husband's job changes, on Oct. 25. We have some choices, and I am choosing between United Health Care, Humana (which are both HMOs),and Dell Medical Plan, which is Dell Computer's plan for employees. We are leaning towards Dell because it seems better, and I don't like HMOs as a rule. Are there any insurance geniuses out there who can tell if one would be better, or there's one to avoid? I am hoping to get everything rolling once we are safely in Austin in early November, and thinking positively for an early 2000 surgery! Call his office and explain to Debbie, his assistant, about the insurance etc. Get your physician referral, letter from a therapist, your letter explaining procedure and your husband's letter of support. When I was approved for Medicaid for me and my daughter we had a choice between Carolina Access and United Heath Care HMO. I chose Carolina Access and have not regretted it since. And yes Dr. R does accept Medicaid if they are willing to pay. I was told by a medicaid rep that the reasoning behind such a quick approval is to keep from having to pay for all the OTHER health problems in the future that will arise due to obesity, since I already am beginning to have some of those problems now. I am an EMT by profession, but cannot work in that capacity right now due to health problems, so I only work part time doing physicals for insurance companies. That is why I was even eligible for Medicaid to begin with, because my income was so low. To sum up. A healthy me=no more Medicaid, because I can resume work full time as an EMT. They did request that I go to Dr. R for a physical, and a diet history before they would approve but once they received that info, (which took about 1 to 1 1/2 months to get it all together and waiting on their response, etc.), then they approved within 7 days of receiving all of the requested info. Also in my policy it states that anything relating to weight loss is excluded. I know they never paid for diet pills. But once everything was sent in they deemed the surgery medically necessary.
