Guest guest
I've just come back from my Neuro and told her of my terrible pain (all over) and also how I feel like I'm depressed, although I've never been that way before. I was diagnosed with CMT 2 about 2 1/2yrs. ago, and guess it is just now catching up with me mentally. I have had to go on SSDI and leave a job that I dearly loved and my whole life style has changed. Guess it took this long to get over the denial stage. At any rate, just wanted to hear others comment on prozac(for depression) and also Ultram(for pain). I showed the pharmacist my list of meds that I carry from the CMT Assoc. and he said that prozac should be used in moderation, because something on that list he saw was related to prozac. Any comments would greatly be appreciated, cause right now I am not such a happy camper after all this today. At this point, I feel that I'm willing to try just about anything to get back on track again.... Thanks.. BC

I will suggest that if you have a problem with weight gain from prozac, or not doing well on prozac, you might try Wellbutrin SR (bupropion). It's not related to prozac, and I've read about good results from it, without weight gain. I think it goes by other names now, too. It's also good for folks who want to stop smoking. (The sustained release form is best.) I am not a medical person. I don't take any anti-depressants, so I don't have personal or professional information. It's just a possible alternative to ask about if prozac doesn't help. Kat

Guest guest
Lamar here, Prozac is an excellent drug for depression. It was the first of a large group of anti-depressants known as " Selective Seratonin Reuptake Inhibitors " (SSRI " s). It frequently causes weight gain usually less than 10%, and averaging about 10 pounds. For many it is safer for many than Wellbutrin which can cause seizures in some individuals. It can cause abdominal cramping and stomach upset which was the reason I could not take it. Many antidepressants will seemingly cause a weight gain. When a person is clinically depressed they often decrease intake markedly. When they feel better they resume eating properly and gain weight. (Some individuals eat MORE when depressed, but they are a minority--especially amongst the severely depressed). Ultram is very good for pain. It does not appear to have any physiological addiction properties. Other than the pain medications that are related to or are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID's)--Motrin, Naprosin, Celebrex, Vioxx, Ultram is probably the safest for most people. When I needed medication for severe pain with my herniated disc that crushed a spinal nerve, it was my drug of choice both for action and safety. Note, the above is not a recommendation for either drug. ----- Original Message ----- From: KathleenLS@... egroups Sent: Tuesday, October 31, 2000 07:54 PM Subject: Re: [] Prozac & Ultram In a message dated 10/31/00 4:37:52 PM, classicb@... writes: << At any rate, just wanted to hear others comment on prozac(for depression) and also Ultram(for pain). >> I have no direct knowledge. I'm going through the same, just haven't been approved for SSDI yet. Ultram helped with my nerve pain unless it was extremely sharp shooting pain. Am now on Neurontin. I don't know about Prozac, hang in there, don't let this thing beat you. The thing about this disease is that it doesn't allow us to be strong physically, but it can't take our emotional strength.
