Guest guest
I won't touch that one cause I am in the same boat only I get paid nothing for the extra " on call " stuff. I think I would rather leave that subject alone right now on a public list for personal reasons, if that is ok. Jane paramedic pay > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I work for a private service. Guest guest
Jane, Just as a matter of curiosity, do you really think you would lose a whole bunch of personnel if they knew they could make better money elsewhere? I know you were being facetious, but some others on the list might not understand the attraction of small town Texas. My experience tells me that people stay in these small communities because of commitment to the area and an old fashioned set of values. For these folks, money seldom makes enough difference to entice a move. I spoke earlier of the medics in my county and how they earn less than 20K. These folks have friends and family here. They were raised here and they are raising their kids here. Most of the calls they run they know the patient by name. Sometimes they are family. In my county we have a volunteer fire service because the cost of a paid service is out of reach. The tax base won't support high wages for law enforcement or EMS either, so these folks work for survival wages. Still they stay. They could make more money elsewhere and they know it. Austin and on county are just down the road a bit. Folks in small towns and rural counties have different priorities. Money, of course, is important. You have to feed the kids and pay the mortgage. Money is just not *the* most important thing in our lives. These people stay here and do what they do out of dedication and commitment to their community. Some leave. Most don't. Many that leave come back once they realize what they left behind. Life goes on. Jane, you and I spoke once about how much we gave up to come back to our little towns. Don't you think it is worth it? People who grew up in the larger cities have no idea how good life can be. I love it here. Regards, Donn ~ Re: paramedic pay ~ ~ ~ I keep them in the dark as to good paying jobs as much as possible. Guest guest
Don't take me so seriously, Donn. Of course I know about the attraction of living in small towns - I have lived in one for the majority of my life. Or better yet, in the country outside of the small towns. I love it there and that is exactly the reason I opted to accept a sizeable paycut to come out here. So, yes, I was being entirely facetious. The personnel that I have working for me right now are top notch folks. They are in the business for all the right reasons and are working here because we are trying to build something in this service. We have started from ground zero and gradually started the climb to a goal - one that includes providing high quality patient care, up-to-date and modern protocols, hopefully soon some more top of the line equipment, and a growing future. We may not pay much, but we are striving to be something really good if at all possible. All of us are in this together - one team working toward a common goal. THAT is why they are still here. None of them really have a big desire to make " the big bucks " - though they wish they could make more money and still work here. LOL To be perfectly truthful, if I see good potential " growth " job opportunities, I generally post them on the education bulletin board in the hallway for anyone in the service to see that might be interested. I don't want anyone to leave, but I would like them to have opportunities to do whatever they feel they need to do to grow in EMS. What kind of friend and boss would I be if I didn't care enough to expose them to opportunities? Guest guest
According to what I know and read about FLSA, this is a direct violation unless your employer knows by research that the " stipend " covers *more* than what you're normally paid per hour, in the times you work extra per month. If not, the employer could be DIRECTLY liable for wages, including back wages, should the employee file for them. Guest guest
And which city run Paramedics might you be talking about that you wouldn't let work on your dog?
