Guest guest
Sara, have you ever applied for WIC? You get free or discounted foods if you're pregnant or have an infant. Also, could you get your prental care done and paid for by insurance and maybe just hire the midwives to do the birth? ~ Karin The Byks wrote: > We are sooooo financially screwed. > > The midwives called to remind us of our appt next week & I had to tell them > we can't pay them next week, & don't know when or how we'll be able to pay > them at all. Guest guest
Sara -- Sometimes good people want to help where they see a need. Last year we were helped anonymously by some folks and th en my aunt helped out with presents and I will alwyas remember her favorite saying: Honey, Love gives. And the people on this list love you! So just remember how many people care about you on this list and tell yourself: Love gives. Someday when you have more you can bless someone else. Isn't it a lovely way to think! Guest guest
i don't get it either really. my husband's sister lives in texas. she sent us a " happy turkey day " card one year! we laughed our asses off! i suppose what makes it even more odd is that my husband and his sister are both british expatriates and they don't celebrate any form of thanksgiving in the UK. " happy turkey day!! " - too funny! i am pretty sure that turkey's not so freaking happy when you are sticking it in the oven! perhaps jacquie and tuna and i could come up with our own holiday " happy moose day " or something?? michelle Re: *sigh* > spoken like a true canadian > What IS the deal there, anyway? Guest guest
I personally view it as a very sacred holiday -- don't know that I care about wether there is turkey or ham but we always seem to have one or the other --- suposedly there was a turkey at the first thanksgiving...or so the story goes. When I say sacred I don't mean spiritually, although it can be if you look at it as a time to truly be thankful for what God had given you (if you beleive _)I mean Thanksgiving is one of those holidays Americans hear about from the time they are kids, in schools and at home -- and it's introduces in schools with the kind of significance of like the fourth of july. Your family, your friends, love, happiness... anything you personally are thankful for. Also I think of overcoming differences and helping others thru adversity. Growing up every American child is taught how the pioneers and the american indians came together ignoring their differences and giving thanks for the harvest. It is a yearly reminder to me that getting over your differences and loving and helping one another through good and bad times brings us all together in harmony. Guest guest
Well when I think of Thanksgiving I think ofa couple of things. I love history so I automatically think back to what the first Thanksgiving actually symbolized. But I am also pretty faithfully Christian and I love using the opportunity to just " Be Thankful " . The first Thanksgiving was symbolic as the first settlers in America settled in for a very hard winter. They had already lost near half of thier number to disease and hunger before that Thanksgiving. They were a very religious group of people who had crossed over on the Mayflower to flee from religious persecution in the first place. To them, this was a test of the Lord and they were so very thankful to be alive and passing this test. Remember that the Indians actually helped out the settlers much during this first winter --- and they supplied the meat for the big Thanksgiving feast as well. Before that first winter was over over half of the settlers were dead because of the elements, including lack of food. I beleive sometime in that next year the newly appointed governor of the colony declared the day Thanksgiving - as a way to thank the Lord for bringing them through the hard winter. The day was to be remembered as a day of Thanksgiving to the Lord - and to serve a reminder of the Lord's blessings. Much of this isn't found in the history books - I did some of my own research and I am a Christian so I read some liturature with that connection as well. But that was a few years back and I could, easily h ave gotten some pionts wrong. Now as for me --- I think I feel a little differently about Thanksgiving than many Americans. I look on it as a special holiday with friends and family to celebrate what the Lord has blessed us with. It is a day filled with Thankful prayers and lots of eating but also a renewed sense of Gratitude. It also serves as the catapault into the Christmas season --- but that is another story altogether! It is a VERY special holiday to me. And I use it as a holiday of remembrance as well - of years past with my mom who passed away and of happier times with family. (some of whom I cannot stand anymore!) And it involves a sense of tradition - adn the desire to pass that on to my children.
