Guest guest
Hi. I am an old member (joined this group in 1999) but have not been actively posting or reading postings for a long time now, probably since 2001. I hope all the "old" members that may remember me are doing well managing their PSC and also all the new members, which there seem to be soooooo many (unfortunatel in that they have PSC but good they found the group as I had found it very very helpful when first diagnosed). Now to my question... Has anyone here having PSC been pregnant and experienced hyperemisis gravidarum (HG)? Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) is a debilitating disease of pregnancy marked by moderate to severe nausea/vomiting that causes rapid weight loss, malnutrition and dehydration in the mother, and unknown consequences for their unborn child(ren). I am wondering if there could be a connection between the two. Also, could the after-effects of the HG (dehydration and malnutrition) be a cause of concern, perhaps affecting the PSC/bile duct/gallbladder? This is my history with pregnancy, HG and PSC: I experienced HG with my first pregnancy losing 20lbs in the 1st trimester and not gaining enough during the rest of the pregnancy. I wound up with pre-eclampsia and delivered at 34 weeks (my son is fine and a happy and healthy 5 yr old.) Five months later I was diagnosed with PSC. I also have UC. MY PSC and UC (yeah!) have been asymptomatic for the past 2 years until... I was just pregnant again happily anticipating my second child when the HG started again. This time I lost 23 pounds in 6-7 weeks (13% of my body weight, which is considered severe HG) becuase I could not eat or drink anything without it coming right back up. I vomited at least 7-10 times a day and it was usually all bile. I wound up in the hospital twice. My UC acted up as well during all this and I wound up on Prednisone to control it because Asacol was not helping (still being weaned from the Prednisone). I wound up miscarrying at 11 weeks and 5 days. I am slowly recuperating from being so dehydrated and malnurished. So far my liver function blood tests came back OK (while I was in hospital) but I am getting little twinges of pain in my rigt side after I eat, especially if it is anything "fatty" which I shouldn't be eating anyway (but the prednisone makes me crave these foods all the time). I go back to my GI next Thursday and I will be asking him these questions but I am curious if anyone else has had a similar experience. Thanks in advance for any information you can give me. Dawn S.
