Guest guest
hi barbara, what a terrible event, i have a friend whos son is susp.mito. and he has a similar type of event when hes" under the weather, " he suddenly becomes v.hot and flushed, ( im not sure about the heart rate thing, ill check on that ) his drs. think that this is caused by the body for some reason not being able to rid itself of carbon dioxide , it therefore builds up in the blood for a period, causing the flushed look. my only other suggestion , would be to find out what type of sedation he was given and quantity, check out the side effects, and in future be very wary of it , despite what the drs. say our kids can react so different, not only to the norm. but by comparison to one another. i am constantly reminded of a local mito. girl who had only just started having mild symptoms, jogged into the hosp. for minor surgery, crashed on the table, has been trach. vent and wheelchair dependent since then. i do hope that your little one is doing better, take care, jillian, daniels mom
Guest guest
You don't mention what kind of sedation your child had. Children with mito CANNOT have gas as a sedative for surgical procedures. Children w/ mito or suspected mito conditions are extremely suscepitble to a hyperthermia-like condition (very dangerous). If all is well now, thank " whomever " . Check with your specialist to see if he's heard of this. If not PLEASE contact me, and I'll forward info I have.
Guest guest
Hi, Thank You for your reply. Corbin was supposed to be put under by IV, but they had such a hard time getting the IV in they had to give him a small amount of gas to calm him and make him woozie enough to get the IV in and keep it in. I'm wondering if they used gas instead of IV concidering the reaction. They didn't leave his IV in. They removed it as soon as he woke up. I thought that was unusual since he has dehydration issues also. The ER doc said he would have had an immediate reation if it were the anethesia. I told her that Corbin has never been predictable. Alot of very strange and very frightening things have happened to him. Almost all were unexplainable. She still felt he was fine and sent him home. He IS fine thank goodness, but that is something I choose to not experience again. I will have to ask his GI doc if she can get the records from the procedure and find out what they used to put him under. This has never happened before and this is the third time he has had general anethesia. I would appreciate any info you can pass on to me. I will be able to have it in case of an emergency. Thanks again, Barbara > You don't mention what kind of sedation your child had. Children with > mito CANNOT have gas as a sedative for surgical procedures. Guest guest
Thanks Jillian, Corbin is completely fine now and was when we left the hospital. I will find out if his GI doc can get info about the anethesia meds used. You are right. They can't use the same ones again. Even if everything did turn out alright. I'll have to ask his Geneticist if she can give me any insight on what happened. I've put in the call, but I haven't heard from her yet. Thanks again, Barbara > hi barbara, what a terrible event, i have a friend whos son is susp.mito. and he has a similar type of event when hes " under the weather, " he suddenly becomes v.hot and flushed, ( im not sure about the heart rate thing, ill check on that ) his drs. think that this is caused by the body for some reason not being able to rid itself of carbon dioxide , it therefore builds up in the blood for a period, causing the flushed look. my only other suggestion , would be to find out what type of sedation he was given and quantity, check out the side effects, and in future be very wary of it , despite what the drs. say our kids can react so different, not only to the norm. but by comparison to one another. i am constantly reminded of a local mito. girl who had only just started having mild symptoms, jogged into the hosp. for minor surgery, crashed on the table, has been trach. vent and wheelchair dependent since then. i do hope that your little one is doing better, take care, jillian, daniels mom

Guest guest
Hi all and thank you for your responses. I spoke to the head of the Anethesiology (spell?) Department today. He was kind and informative. He told me the gas used was Nitris Oxside(spell agian?) Apperantly this is a gas that is safe to use with patients that are suceptable to Malignant Hyperthermia. So according to his information, the gas didn't cause the episode. He thinks, after hearing my discription of what happened, that Corbin had a hypoglycemic event. He said that if someone who has metabolic issues(I may not retale this correctly. Forgive me please.) fasts and has a sugar load(popcycle) sometimes they have a severe drop in blood sugar. Something about the liver not being able to produce or clean out what ever it is supposed to so the blood sugar levels do not regulate. In time the liver does it's job and the blood sugar raises again. He said that when someone is hypoglycemic they can present as being very flushed and hot to the touch. They would also have a high heart rate. As he explained it, it does make sense that this is a possible explaination. I am not able to speak to Corbin's Geneticist, she is on vacation till the end of the month. All in all, the hospital is going to send me the records from his test and the ER visit so we can have it for the future. They are also going to go over my sons complete records from past and present so that things can be handled better if there is a next time. They will be back in contact with me. So I will follow up. I hope this made sense. I'm kind of tired and have a terrible memory. I'm sure there are many mispellings also. Again I appreciate all of your responses. They do help so much while trying to get through such frustrating times. This is a wonderful group full of caring and very strong people. I have recieved much support in the past when my son was ill so much more often. This has been a very comforting place to come to and I hope to be able to help others here too. Good Night all.
